Abdominal cystic lymphangioma is a rare congenital malformation of lymphatics. Prognosis is excellent with exact diagnosis and complete surgical excision. The aughors analysed 10 US scans and 9 CT scans of surgically proven cystic lymphangiom for the last 5 years. US scan showed it as a septated cystic mass and 2 cases showed fluid-fluid level. CT scan showed a huge unilocular or multilocular density mass with uniformly thickened septae. A huge unilocular or multilocular cystic mass with uniformly thickened septae could suggest cystic lymphangioma would be differentiated from the other cystic masse.

Twenty-five patients presenting with severe hemorrhage from benign peptic ulcers were randomized to either endoscopic injection sclerosis using a combination of hypertonic saline- epinephrine solution and 5% ethanolamine or to hypertonic-saline epinephrine solution only. Only high risk patients with active bleeding or endoscopic stigmata of recent hemorrhage of ulcers were considered. A median duration of hospital admission and median transfusion requirements between the two types of treated groups were not significant difference. The initial hemestatic effects of HS-E solution injection group(n=l5) or combination of HS- E solution and 5% ethanolamine injection group(n=l0) were 93%, 90% respectively. The rebleeding rate of HS-E solution injection group(n =15) or combination of HS-E solution and 5% ethanolamine injection group(n=10) were 33%, 30%, respectively. So, both HS-E solution therapy group and comination of HS-E solution & 5% ethanolamine injection group were effective in initial hemostasis for bleeding peptic ulcer patients. However, for the further evaluation of therapeutic effect and comparison of rebleeding rate between the two types of therapy, we think that it will be indispensable to collect more cases and to compare with control group.

Isovolumic phase indices of right ventricular(RV) systolic function were evaluated in 9 normal control cases(Group I) and 9 patients with mitral stenosis(Group IIa) and 8 patients with mitral stenosis and aortic regurgitation(Group IIb). RV systolic pressures of all patients in Group II(n=17) were over 40mmHg RV dp/dt max, Vmax and Vpm were measured by digitizing method and V(CE10) were measured by manual tangent method. RV isovolumic contractile functional indices were greater in Group II(n=17) compared with those in Group I(n=9) : RV dp/dt max(mmHg. Sec(-1)) 347.8+/-104.4(mean+/-SD) VS 230.5+/-65.5(p<0.05), Vmax(Sec(-1)) 30.9+/-10 VS 20.1+/-5.18(p<0.05), Vpm(Sec(-1)) 22.96+/-9.63 VS 14.8+/-4.04(p<0.05) and V(CE10)(Sec(-1)) 20.4+/-7.11 VS 12.5+/-5.31(p<0.05). But no significant differences were noted between Group IIa(n=9) and Group IIb(n=8) in these indices. In all cases(n=26), significant correlations were noted between V(CE10) and Vmax(r=0.90), V(CE10) and Vpm(r=0.85). We summurized that RV contractile function is preserved in many cases with mitral stenosis and V(CE10) may be used as an convenient index for RV contractile function.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer is the second most frequent cause of death in Korea. Cancer screening tests can save lives through early detection. Enhancing the cancer screening rate is an important strategy for reducing cancer mortality. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the screening rate and related factors in a rural area. The study investigated relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, several preventive behaviors, and the experience of several cancer screening behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population was recruited voluntarily from the three rural areas(Myen) in Chungju city. The participants completed structured questionnaire from July 21, 1998 to July 26, 1998. RESULTS: The proportions of the study population who had previously received stomach, liver, breast, or cervix cancer screening tests were 24.5%, 18.5%, 27.0%, 59.2% respectively. The 1-year screening rates of stomach, liver, breast, and cervix cancer were 7.4%, 6.8%, 8.6%, 15.6% respectively. In multivariate logistic analysis, some sociodemographic variables, preventive behaviors, or psychological variables were significantly associated with several cancer screening tests. Those who had previously received a stomach cancer screening test were significantly associated with the presence of chronic disease, physician? recommendation, use of alcohol family history of cancer, or previous liver cancer screening test. Those who had previously received a liver cancer screening test were associated with education level, physician? recommendation and previous stomach cancer screening test. Those who had received a cervix cancer screening test were significantly associated with education level, presence of a transportation vehicle, physician? recommendation use of alcohol and previous breast cancer screening test. And those who had received a previous breast cancer screening test were significantly associated with age, marital status, and earlier cervix cancer screening test. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study a strategy to promote cancer screening and health objectives at the district level can be made.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluated the usefulness of diffusion-weighted magnatic resonance imaging for monitoring the response to radiation therapy in metastatic bone marrow of the spines. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Twenty-one patients with metastatic bone marrow of the spine were examined with MRI. Diffusion-weighted and spin-echo MRI were performed in 10 patients before and after radiation therapy with or without systematic chemotherapy, and performed in 11 patiemts after radiation therapy alone. Follow up spin-echo and diffusion-weighted MRI were obtained at 1 to 6 months after radiation therapy according to patients' condition. The diffusion-weighted imaging sequence was based on reversed fast imaging with steady-state precession(PSIF). Signal intensity changes of the metastatic bone marrows before and after radiation therapy on conventional spin-echo sequence MRI and diffusion-weighted MRI were evaluated. Bone marrow contrast ratios and signal-to-noise ratio before and after radiation therapy of diffusion-weighted MRI were analyzed. RESULTS: All metastatic bone marrow of the spinal bodies were hyperintense to normal bone marrow of the spinal bodies on pretreatment diffusion-weighted MRI and positive bone marrow contrast ratio(p<0.001). and hypointense to normal spinal bodies on posttreatment diffusion-weighted MRI and negative bone marrow contrast ratio(p<0.001). The signal to noise ratio after treatment decreased comparing with those of pretreatment. Decreased signal intensity of the metastatic bone marrows on diffusion-weighted MRI began to be observed at average more than one month after the initiation of the radiation therapy. CONCLUSION: tThese results suggest that diffusion-weighted MRI would be an excellent method for monitoring the response to therapy of metastatic bone marrow of the spinal bodies. However, must be investigated in a larger series of patients with longer follow up period.

Parenchymal pulmonary endometriosis has unique symptoms such as hemoptysis, dyspnea and chest pain in associated with menstruation. We experienced a case of parenchymal pulmonary endometriosis with the complaints of catamenial hemoptysis. Bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) was performed when catamenial hemoptysis occurred. The BAL fluid showed many erythrocytes, hemosiderin-laden macrophages, and sheets of endometrial stromal cells.

Information on work stress and mental health status of industrial workers was required for optimum staffing and health care management. This study dealt with the relationship between mental health status examined by PSI(psychiatric symptom index) and socio-demographic variables. Especially this study attempted to find relevant determinants of the stress and mental health through multiple stepwise regression analysis based on data obtained from 687 occupational workers. The findings of this study were as follows; Mean scores of symptom dimension were higher in youth, female, more educated, unmarried and divorced, and workers in the noisy condition and short duration in job. And it showed high scores in long duration in job for anxiety; college educated for anger; unmarried for cognitive disturbance. The factors affecting the mean scores of psychiatric symptom index were varied according to the types of symptom; age, sex and duration in job for anxiety; age, sex, living with parent, education and marital status for anger; sex and marital status for depression; noisy condition and sex for cognitive disorder.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a demyelinating disease of probable autoimmune etiology. The MR images of patients with clinically suspected ADEM were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical symptoms occurred 5 days to 1 month after viral upper respiratory infection (4) and Coxsakie viral infection(1). The symptoms had begun with fever(3), headache(3), sore throat(1), and drowsy mental state (1), which progressed with monophasic course to altered mental change(2), extremity weakness(2), seizure(1) and/or cerebellary symptom(I) MRI findings of ADEM showed patchy(4), nonhemorrhagic(5), asymmetric(5) high signal intensity lesions on T2-weighted images. The number of the lesions was mostly multiple(4). The lesions mainly involved the brain stem(3) and subcortical white matter(3). Follow-up MR images of 13 days to 20 days after high dose steroid therapy showed marked improvement in two of three, which well correlated with clinical manifestations. MR findin of multiple, patchy, nonhemorrhagic and asymmetric lesions in subcortical white matter and brain stem on T2-weighted images seem to be characteristic features of ADEM, but nonspecific. Therefore, clinical correlation is required in evaluating ADEM.

A series of 38 pediatric stone patients was studied retrospectively according to the clinical patterns of urolithiasis, etiology of stone disease, and management. The idiopathic cause was the most common of stone formation in the children. The most common type of stone in analysis was calcium oxalate. Thus, the etiology of stone disease and composition of stone was not definitely different in comparison with adult stone disease. We treated almost of stone patients with ESWL and peration was done in case of EWSL failure. And ESWL is the most effective and safe treatment of pediatric urolithiasis at present time. But anesthesia is needed to perform ESWL, especially younger children.
