PURPOSE: The study was conducted to investigate correlations between self-management and physiological measurements of patients on hemodialysis according to their age. METHODS: The subjects were 120 patients on hemodialysis at three hospitals in S and G cities. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and medical records. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation analysis with the SPSS 23.0 program. RESULTS: The levels of compliance with self-management were highest in the middle-aged group. There was no significant difference in physiological measurements between the different age groups. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that nurses should consider characteristics of different age groups to improve the levels of self-management and physiological measurements.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of abdominal skin massage and warming therapy on the pain and anxiety to breast cancer patients who underwent hormone injections. METHODS: The subjects for the study were 60 breast cancer patients who underwent hormone injections (20 in the control group, 20 in the abdominal skin massage group, and 20 in the warming therapy group). Abdominal skin massage was conducted following KSMA's (Korea science massage association) advice and warming therapy was executed at 48 ℃ for 20 minutes. The results were checked using subjective and objective measurement tools. RESULTS: After abdominal skin massage and warming therapy, subjective (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS) and objective (facial expression and vocal change) pain scores were significantly decreased (p<.001) Also, Anxiety state was significantly decreased compared to the control group (p =.043). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that abdominal skin massage and warming therapy were highly effective in alleviating pain and anxiety in patients who underwent hormone injections.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in the performance of life-sustaining treatment after signing a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order between terminal cancer patients who died in the cancer unit and hospice unit. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 174 patients who died in the cancer unit (CU) and 68 patients who died in the hospice unit (HU) from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016 at a hospital specializing in cancer treatment. RESULTS: The rate of life-sustaining treatment administration was lower for patients who died in the HU than that of those who died in the CU. The period until death after signing a DNR order was 7 days for CU patients and 19.5 days for the HU patients. The period from admission to death was also significantly longer in HU patients (32.5 days) than that in CU patients (21.5 days, p < .001). Of the patients who died in the CU, 54% were referred to the HU but did not use the service. Most of the people who signed DNR informed consents were spouses and offspring; only 4.6% of patients signed DNRs. CONCLUSION: It is hard to say that life-sustaining treatment increases the survival period, but it can improve symptom control and quality of life in hospices. Activation of consultation-based hospice is necessary for patients who cannot use the hospice unit. To increase patient's active participation in the life-sustaining treatment decision of terminal cancer patients, it is necessary that an advanced practice nurse specialized in counseling and education is involved in the decision.

Purpose: In Korea, the absence of a modified physical activity (PA) questionnaire specifically tailored for Koreans hinders the accurate assessment of PA among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). This study aimed to evaluate PA levels in individuals with SCI using a modified PA questionnaire and to provide insights into their PA patterns in Korea. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was developed by revising and adapting the Korean version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (K-IPAQ) during an advisory meeting. Between April and June 2023, 176 individuals with SCI from metropolitan areas in Korea were recruited to assess their weekly PA. PA was quantified in Metabolic Equivalent Task-min/week (MET-min/week) by multiplying the reported PA duration. Results: The average PA level among individuals with SCI in Korea was 2,907.2±194.8 MET-min/week. By intensity, high-intensity activities accounted for 2,760.0±280.5 MET-min/week, moderate-intensity activities for 1,148.8±89.0 MET-min/week, and low-intensity activities for 1,869.4±110.3 MET-min/week. Approximately half of the participants met the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for PA. Conclusion Although Korean individuals with SCI demonstrated higher average PA levels compared to findings from other countries and the WHO recommendations, only about half of the participants met the WHO’s guidelines. These results underscore the need to strengthen efforts to promote PA participation among individuals with SCI.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the clinical characteristics of lower respiratory infections of preterm children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and compared them between those with and without lower respiratory infections that of preterm patients without BPD. METHODS: This study enrolled preterm patients under 2 years old, who admitted with acute lower respiratory infection from March 2014 to May 2016. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to BPD, and we retrospectively reviewed their medical records. RESULTS: A total of 71 patients (106 cases) were enrolled; the BPD group consisited of 29 patients (54 cases) and the control group 42 patients (52 cases). Compared to the patients in the control group, those in the BPD group were older (P=0.001), had lower gestational age and birth weight (P<0.001), and showed more frequent readmission in hospital (P=0.017). The most common causative virus was human rhinovirus (hRV) in the BPD group, whereas respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the control group. The patients in the BPD group showed a higher incidence of tachypnea, decreased aeration, and chest retraction (P<0.001, P=0.009, and P=0.026, respectively), a higher respiratory symptom score (P=0.011), a longer duration of cough and wheezy sounds (P=0.004 and P=0.009, respectively), and higher incidence and longer duration of treatment with oxygen, and mechanical ventilator support (P=0.016 and P=0.017, respectively) than those in the control group. In the BPD group, the patients with RSV showed a higher incidence of tachypnea and rales (P=0.033 and P=0.033, respectively) than those with hRV. CONCLUSION: The preterm children with BPD may have more severe clinical manifestations than those without.

A 75-year old man with esophageal cancer presented with mental status change and seizures. He was under cisplatinand developed several times of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. The EEG (electroencephalography) showed triphasic waves and slowed background activity. He was diagnosed with status epilepticus and encephalopathy caused by cisplatin. He was treated with anticonvulsants and cisplatin was replaced by docetaxel. His mentality recovered completely and he had no more seizure. We conclude that physician using cisplatin should be aware of this rare complication.
