There are many studies of the spousal bereavement as an important etiologic factor of depression in elders. But there are some differernt natures of spousal bereavement between the Korean and the western elderly. The problems of spousal bereavement in Korean would be more persistent than that in western. And the depressive symptoms of Korean elders are different with that of western elders due to the differences of sociocultural background. The authors studied the effect of the spousal bereavement to the depressive symptoms of elders by using KGDS (Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale), which already has been standardized in Korea. The subjects were consist of one hundred seventy-five, 60 years and older. The authors compared KGDS and its 5 factors in the spousal bereaved subjects group (SBG) with those in the spousal non-bereaved subjects group (SNG), and also investigated the differences according to sex and children living with the subject in the SBG. And the authors analysed the correlations between ages at spousal death, durations after spousal death and KGDS in the SBG. The mean KGDS scores in the SBG were significantly higher than that of the SNG, and especially Factor 1, Factor 2 and Factor 4 were significant. In the SBG, the mean KGDS scores of the female were significantly higher than that of the male, and especially Factor 2, Factor 3, and Factor 5 were significant. And in the SBG, the mean KGDS scores of the subjects living with children were slightly higher than those of the subjects living without children. And also in the SBG, there were negative correlations between KGDS scores and ages at spousal death, and positive correlations between KGDS scores and durations after spousal death. The authors found that the spousal bearevement could be an important etiologic factor of geriatric depression, and the risk factors of depression were female, younger at spousal death and longer duration after spousal death in bereaved elders, as the earlier studies in the western. However, the authors found that, in Korea, there were some different results from the western, such as the longer duration after spousal death and higher ratio of the widower to the widow than that in the western, the spousal bereaved elders living with children were rather depressive than who living without children.

Journal of Gastric Cancer 2017;17(1):11-20
PURPOSE: Acupuncture has recently been accepted as a treatment option for managing postoperative ileus (POI) and various functional gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, we conducted a prospective randomized study to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on POI and other surgical outcomes in patients who underwent gastric surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients who underwent distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer from March to December 2015 were randomly assigned to acupuncture or non-acupuncture (NA) groups at 1:1 ratio. The acupuncture treatment was administered treatment once daily for 5 consecutive days starting at postoperative day 1. The primary outcome measure was the number of remnant sitz markers in the small intestine on abdominal radiograph. The secondary outcome measure was the surgical outcome, including the times to first flatus, first defecation, start of water intake, and start of soft diet, as well as length of hospital stay and laboratory findings. RESULTS: The acupuncture group had significantly fewer remnant sitz markers in the small intestine on postoperative days 3 and 5 compared to those in the NA group. A significant difference was observed in the numbers of remnant sitz markers in the small intestine with respect to group differences by time (P<0.0001). The acupuncture group showed relatively better surgical outcomes than those in the NA group, but the differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: In this clinical trial, acupuncture promoted the passage of sitz markers, which may reflect the possibility of reducing POI after distal gastrectomy.

PURPOSE: The standard treatment for primary localized gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is surgical resection. The clinical behavior of gastric GIST after surgical resection is extremely variable. We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study of gastric GISTs patients who underwent curative surgical resection to evaluate clinical features and the prognosis of surgically treated gastric GISTs. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on 406 consecutive patients who underwent curative resections for localized gastric GIST at four university hospitals in Daegu, Korea, between March 1998 and March 2012. The retrospectively collected medical records were reviewed with respect to clinical parameters including age, gender, tumor location, surgical approach, and recurrence. RESULTS: There were 406 patients: 157 males (38.7%) and 249 females (61.3%), with a mean age of 60.8 +/- 10.8 (standard deviation) years. The mean tumor size was 4.9 cm (range, 0.3-29 cm). Curative surgical resection was performed in all patients without tumor rupture or spillage. Laparoscopic wedge resections were performed in 156 patients (38.4%) and open resections in 250 patients (61.6%). The tumor size of the laparoscopic wedge resection group was smaller than that of open resection group (3.45 cm vs. 5.46 cm; P < 0.001). There were 11 recurrent cases (2.7%). No recurrence was observed in patients who underwent laparoscopic wedge resections. CONCLUSION: Gastric GISTs had a low recurrence rate after curative resection in our series. Laparoscopic gastric wedge resection is feasible for treating gastric GISTs in selected patients.

Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2023;66(3):180-190
Lung cancer is representative of a high frequency and high mortality disease and ranks at the top in incidence and mortality in Korea, when excluding thyroid cancer. In this manuscript, we focused on current targeted therapies for lung cancer used widely in the medical field.Current Concepts: The majority of patients with lung cancer cannot be treated with surgery only and require chemotherapeutics or radiation therapy. Currently, classical chemotherapeutic agents, targeted agents, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are the most widely used. Recently, the Research and Development of antibody-drug conjugates is gaining attention, and this may become a more widely prescribed treatment in the future. Among the available treatment options, targeted therapy is becoming increasingly feasible and widespread for treating inoperable lung cancers, where driver mutations have been identified, and for adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapies. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) improves the ability to identify driver mutations that were previously difficult to detect and can also be performed on blood samples where no cancer tissue is available for testing. This makes it possible to identify therapeutic targets for targeted therapy more rapidly.Discussion and Conclusion: The most common type of lung cancer in Korea is adenocarcinoma, for which a driver mutation has been identified. Newly developed drugs target previously problematic mutations or cancer cell lines that have acquired resistance induced during the treatment process. The survival rate of patients with lung cancer is expected to improve with the development of tailored treatments for targets identified from the NGS data of the patient. This paper will help clinicians understand the current state of targeted therapies for lung cancer treatment.

Journal of the Korean Society of Biological Psychiatry 2017;24(3):134-141
OBJECTIVES: A retrospective case series study was conducted to investigate the clinical characteristics of psychotic disorders induced by appetite suppressants, phentermine and phendimetrazine. METHODS: A retrospective electronic medical record review identified 5 admitted patients who had psychotic symptoms after taking phentermine or phendimetrazine. Clinical information was reviewed and summarized in each case. RESULTS: Hallucinations were reported in all cases, including auditory, visual, olfactory and somatic hallucinations. After discontinuation of phentermine or phendimetrazine, the symptoms rapidly improved with low dose of antipsychotics. Patients tended to have less prominent negative symptoms and higher insight into illness, and often showed depressive mood. These clinical characteristics were similar to psychosis induced by amphetamines. Two patients developed stimulant use disorder while using phentermine. CONCLUSIONS: These findings call for awareness of the risks associated with use of appetite suppressants. Prescription of phentermine or phendimetrazine should be accompanied by close monitoring of mental status, and suspicion for substance/medication-induced psychotic disorder.

Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2024;63(3):167-176
Objectives:
Pandemic diseases like COVID-19 could affect people even after they are cured. In this study, we asked COVID-19 survivors whether they showed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and tried to figure out what factors can affect their symptoms.
Methods:
Approximately 3 months after their discharge, a psychological survey was conducted with 83 adults (38 men and 45 women, mean age 38.6±11.3 years) who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 in an isolation ward. The group was divided according to the presence or absence of PTSD symptoms, and differences in demographic, psychological, and hospitalizationrelated factors between the groups were analyzed using the independent t-test. We conducted hierarchical multiple regression analysis exploring variables affecting PTSD symptoms.
Results:
Fourteen of the survey respondents (15.8%) reported experiencing PTSD symptoms, including partial PTSD symptoms. The group with PTSD symptoms appeared to have more pain upon admission to hospital, compared to the group without PTSD symptoms. The group with PTSD symptoms showed higher anxiety and depression than the group without PTSD symptoms, and their physical quality of life was found to be low. The presence of PTSD symptoms seemed to be influenced by anxiety sensitivity.
Conclusion
Our findings suggest that hospitalization in an isolation ward due to COVID-19 may be associated with the development of PTSD symptoms. Anxiety sensitivity could influence the level of PTSD symptoms after discharge. The results of this study suggest the need to monitor and care for the mental health of patients admitted to and discharged from isolation wards due to infection.
