1.Remarks on the results of treatment for paranoid schizophrenic patients with electroconvulsive combined neuroleptic therapy
Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2005;0(10):27-30
Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe psychotic disease with high incidence. Treatment of schizophrenia with neuroleptic is a major medical advance, but sometime its result is still limited. Objective: To study the effect of electroconvulsive therapy (EC) in treatment of paranoid schizophrenic patients. Subject and methods: 101 paranoid schizophrenic patients treated by neuroleptic alone or neuroleptic combined EC, were treated in the Mental Department of Hospital 103 and Nam Dinh Mental Hospital from May, 2006 to June, 2007. Results and Conclusion: All 100% of the patients had a positive response to EC; the mean times of EC were 7.63\xb11.4 times for one. The regression of hallucination was observed after 4.6\xb11.49 times of EC; delusion after 4.96\xb11.4 times; suicide attempt after 3.25\xb10.96 times and refusing to eat after 4.96\xb12.1 times of EC; insomnia disappeared after 4.96\xb12.1 times of EC. Some side effects of the EC therapy: 100% of patients had orientation disorder; headache with light and moderate level accounted for 69.65% and 26.79%, respectively. Combination therapy made patients more stable, compared to neuroleptic therapy alone (p<0.05).

2.Research on progress of schizophrenia type paranoid after chemotherapy and training for family in the publicity
Journal of Practical Medicine 1998;344(1):44-46
60 patients with schizophrenia type paranoid treated in the Central hospital of Psychology were randomly divided into 2 groups: group I (30 patients): intensive intervention; group II (30 patient): control. The results have shown that the ages which starts suffering the disease were about 20-35; after 4 months of research on progress of the schizophrenia type paranoid and after chomotherapy and training for family in the publicity, the correct awareness, attitude for disease and ability of the social reintegration in the intervented group were better than these in the control

As a solution about many problems of pharmacotherapy for Korean patients with major psychiatric disorders, Korean Medication Algorithm Project for Major Psychiatric Disorders (KMAP) was launched. Recently, a medication algorithm for schizophrenic patients was developed and distributed. This review article showed the designs, processes and methods for developing this algorithm. Also we compared the development of Korean algorithm for schizophrenics with other foreign representative algorithms or clinical practice guidelines. We hope that this review elicit the productive criticism about the rigour, the system of development and the objectivity of content. The limitations and problems of Korean algorithm are also discussed in this review.

Journal of the Korean Society of Biological Psychiatry 2015;22(3):95-100
Treatment of schizophrenia is one of the most challenging areas in the field of psychiatry. There has been much improvement in psycho-pharmacotherapy, and at present, psycho-pharmacotherapy along with milieu therapy and social rehabilitation is the standard first-line treatment for schizophrenia. Healing environment, a concept which has arisen from the architectural field, has similarities in meaning to milieu therapy in psychiatry. In other words, healing environment may be an encountering point between psychiatry and architecture. In this encountering, each field can understand each other and expand its concept to aid the treatment of schizophrenia and to plan the build-up of the entire environment considering its social and psychological effects. In this paper, we aim to establish the basic concept of healing environment to alleviate the psychopathologies in schizophrenic patients. We worked under the premise that physical setting affects human behavior and mind, and that physical setting should play a role as a medium with therapeutic potential for patients with medical problems. The aims of this paper are as follows. First, theoretical discussion of the concept and the constructs of healing environment : second, understanding of the schizophrenic symptoms that may be affected by supporting environment : and third, discussion of supporting environment that may alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia.

6.Meta-analysis of assisted music therapy for chronic schizophrenia.
Acta Academiae Medicinae Sinicae 2002;24(6):564-567
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effect of assisted music therapy for chronic schizophrenia.
METHODS11 articles including 603 chronic schizophrenia patients were meta-analyzed using fixed effect model or random effect model.
RESULTS6 randomized controlled trials were synthesized, showing that the difference was significant in statistics between experimental group (patients with music and drugs therapy) and control group (patients with drugs therapy only). Both the scores of SANS and BPRS for the control group were higher than those for the experimental group (SANS, d = 0.68; 95%CI: 0.46-0.90 and BPRS, d = 0.44; 95%CI: 0.06-0.82). In addition, the scores of both SANS and BPRS for the pre-test were higher than those for the post-test (SANS, d = 1.17; 95%CI: 0.02-2.32 and BPRS, d = 2.05; 95%CI: 0.28-3.82).
CONCLUSIONThe short-term effect of assisted music therapy is positive for chronic schizophrenia, but the long-term effect is still to be further studied.

7.The Efficacy and Safety of Concurrent Administration of Clozapine and Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Case Report.
Korean Journal of Psychopharmacology 2000;11(1):73-77
To assess the efficacy and safety of combining electroconvulsive therapy(ECT) and clozapine in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, the authors reviewed use of this combination in one treatment-resistant schizophrenic inpatient and to explain the mechanism of this combination, we measured the blood level of clozapine and its metabolite with high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) before, during and after this combination. The combination of clozapine and bilateral ECT was mildly effective and the authors saw no adverse effects during combined treatment. The blood levels of clozapine and its metabolite did not significant change before, during and afyer this combination. Combining ECT and clozapine appears to be safe and is effective without significant change of the blood levels of clozapine and its metabolites in some patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

9.Effects of Group Music Therapy on Psychiatric Symptoms and Interpersonal Relationship in Patients with Schizophrenia.
Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing 2012;15(2):126-132
PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the effects of group music therapy on psychiatric symptoms and interpersonal relationship in patient with schizophrenia. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental study with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 63 patients with schizophrenia at S psychiatric sanatorium in D city. Thirty two patients were assigned to experimental group and thirty one patients were assigned to control group. Data were collected from August 4 to September 25, 2011. The group music therapy was conducted for 60 minutes, 8 times per week for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi2 test and t-test with SPSS/WIN 19.0 version. RESULTS: Experimental group receiving group music therapy showed significant improvements of psychiatric symptoms and interpersonal relationship. CONCLUSION: The study results indicate that group music therapy is an effective intervention program in improving psychiatric symptoms and interpersonal relationship of patients with schizophrenia.

Animal models of schizophrenia are important for research aimed at developing improved pharmacotherapies. In particular, the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia remain largely refractory to current medications and there is a need for improved medications. We discuss the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and in particular the possible mechanisms underlying the cognitive deficits. We review the current animal models of schizophrenia and discuss the extent to which they meet the need for models reflecting the various domains of the symptomatology of schizophrenia, including positive symptoms, negative symptoms and cognitive symptoms.
