PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the influence of severity of drinking problem, circadian rhythm and sleep quality in patients with alcohol use. METHODS: A descriptive study design was utilized. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from 139 patients with alcohol use disorder who were admitted to a psychiatric hospital in D city, Korea. The questionnaires included Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), Composite Scale of Morningness (CMS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Korea sleep scale A. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regressions using the SPSS 20.0 program. RESULTS: There was significant correlations among severity of problem drinking, circadian rhythm, sleep quality and sleep disorder. The significant factors influencing sleep disorder were severity of problem drinking(β=.12, p=.042), circadian rhythm(β=−.14, p=.039) and sleep quality(β=.63, p=<.001). This model explained 56% of variance in sleep disorder(F=57.34, p=<.001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the development of sleep intervention programs for alcohol use disorder patients needs to consider severity of alcohol use, circadian rhythm and sleep quality, and sleep assessment and intervention are needed the early stage of the treatment and recovery process.

A 60-year-old man visited the outpatient clinic complaining of spasmodic abdominal pain. The symptoms had started 4 days previously, within 1 hour of eating sliced raw flatfish (sashimi) and a piece of flatfish gut. Gastroscopy revealed generalized mucosal edema, erythema, multiple erosions, and numerous worms penetrating the gastric mucosa at the greater and lesser curvatures of the middle and lower corpora. Fifty-one worms, 0.5-3 cm in length, were successfully removed with biopsy forceps. Three weeks later, a normal mucosa-covered, 3.5-cm round submucosal tumor (SMT) was found on the greater curvature of the lower corpus and four yellowish, 1-cm SMTs were found on the hepatic flexure of the colon. Histopathological examination revealed marked eosinophilic infiltration in the gastric and colonic mucosa and an eosinophilic abscess in the submucosa. Here, we report a case of eosinophilic granuloma manifesting as SMTs in the stomach and colon after the endoscopic removal of a large number of anisakids.

Botryomycosis is an uncommon chronic suppurative bacterial infection of the skin and visceral organs seen primarily in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of splenic botryomycosis caused by Streptococcus mitis in a 53-year-old immunocompetent woman with a history of distal gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To circumvent the limitations of the current golden standard method, colony-forming unit (CFU) assay, for viability of Bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccines, we developed a new method to rapidly and accurately determine the potency of BCG vaccines. METHODS: Based on flow cytometry (FACS) and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) as the most appropriate fluorescent staining reagent, 17 lots of BCG vaccines for percutaneous administration and 5 lots of BCG vaccines for intradermal administration were analyzed in this study. The percentage of viable cells measured by flow cytometry along with the total number of organisms in BCG vaccines, as determined on a cell counter, was used to quantify the number of viable cells. RESULTS: Pearson correlation coefficients of FACS and CFU assays for percutaneous and intradermal BCG vaccines were 0.6962 and 0.7428, respectively, indicating a high correlation. The coefficient of variation value of the FACS assay was less than 7%, which was 11 times lower than that of the CFU assay. CONCLUSION: This study contributes to the evaluation of new potency test method for FACS-based determination of viable cells in BCG vaccines. Accordingly, quality control of BCG vaccines can be significantly improved.

BACKGROUND: The use of growth factors in skin rejuvenation is emerging as a novel anti-aging treatment. While the role of growth factors in wound healing is well established, their use in skin rejuvenation has only recently been to be studied and no controlled trials have been performed. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the anti-aging effects of secretory factors of endothelial precursor cells differentiated from human embryonic stem cells (hESC-EPC) in Asian skin. METHODS: A total of 25 women were included in this randomized, controlled split-face study. The right and left sides of each participant's face were randomly allocated to hESC-EPC conditioned medium (CM) or saline. To enhance epidermal penetration, a 0.25-mm microneedle roller was used. Five treatment sessions were repeated at 2-week intervals. RESULTS: Physician's global assessment of pigmentation and wrinkles after treatment revealed statistically significant effects of microneedling plus hESC-EPC CM compared to microneedling alone (p<0.05). Skin measurements by Mexameter and Visiometer also revealed statistically significant effects of microneedling plus hESC-EPC CM on both pigmentation and wrinkles (p<0.05). The only minimal adverse event was mild desquamation in one participant. CONCLUSION: Secretory factors of hESC-EPC improve the signs of skin aging and could be a potential option for skin rejuvenation.
