1.Immunohistochemical Study on Early Odontogenesis in Hsp70 Knock-out Mice Fetuses Exposed by Maternal Hyperthermia.

To investigate the effects of maternal hyperthermia on early odontogenesis,pregnant Hsp70 knock-out and wild type mice at embryonic day (ED)8.5 were immersed in a 43 degrees C water bath until their core body temperature reached that temperature,and then given a further 5 min of hyperthermia.Untreated Hsp70 WT mice fetuses were used as the control group.Fetuses were collected at EDs 13.5,15.5 and 17.5.Developing teeth in the mandible were processed for histological and immunohistochemical studies.Tissue sections were immunostained for FGF-8 and FGF -4 and observed using light microscopy.In the controls, FGF-8 immunolocalization was observed in cells within the dental lamina and in apically located dental epithelium at ED 13.5.However,a few cells were immunopositive in the heat shocked (HS)group.At EDs 15.5 and 17.5 of the control group,the basal lamina adjacent to the dental pulp showed positive immunostaining.In contrast,most of the dental epithelium was immunopositive at ED 15.5 in the HS group and inner and outer dental epithelial cells were continuously immunopositive by ED 17.5.FGF-4 immunolocalization was found in apical dental epithelium at ED 13.3 in the control group,but no such positive reaction was observed in the HS group.At ED 15.5 in the controls,basal lamina and dental epithelium near the cervical loop were immunopositive.In contrast,early cap-stage teeth had cells near the mouth of the dental bud and cervical loop that were immunopositive to FGF-4 in the HS group.In controls at ED 17.5,cells near the future secondary enamel knot were immunopositive,whereas most of the dental epithelium except for cells in the mouth of the dental lamina was negative in the HS group.Thus,maternal hyperthermia may inhibit normal odontogenesis through sustained production of FGF-8 and downregulation of FGF-4.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) can be safely performed 2 cm below the cricothyroid membrane without the aid of a bronchoscope. Although our simplified method is convenient and does not require sophisticated equipment, the precise location for tracheostomy cannot be confirmed. Because it is recommended that tracheostomy be performed at the second tracheal ring, we assessed whether patient characteristics could predict the distance between the cricothyroid membrane and the second tracheal ring. METHODS: Data from 490 patients who underwent three-dimensional neck computed tomography from January 2012 to December 2015 were analyzed, and the linear distance from the upper part of the cricoid cartilage (CC) to the lower part of the second tracheal ring (2TR) was measured in the sagittal plane. RESULTS: The mean CC-to-2TR distance was 25.26 mm (95% CI 25.02–25.48 mm). Linear regression analysis showed that the predicted CC-to-2TR distance could be calculated as −5.73 + 0.2 × height (cm) + 1.22 × sex (male: 1, female: 0) + 0.01 × age (yr) −0.03 × weight (kg) (adj. R² = 0.55). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that height and sex should be considered when performing PDT without bronchoscope guidance.

We identified single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in the laccase gene to establish a line-diagnostic system for shiitake mushrooms. A total of 89 fungal isolates representing four lines, including Korean registered, Korean wild type, Chinese, and Japanese lines, were analyzed. The results suggest that SNP markers in the laccase gene can be useful for line typing in shiitake mushrooms.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is recognized as a safe and effective treatment modality for early-stage lung cancer and anterior mediastinal masses.Recently, novel articulating instruments have been developed and introduced to endoscopic surgery. Here, we share our early experiences with VATS major pulmonary resection and thymectomy performed using ArtiSential articulating instruments.
Methods:
At the Seoul Metropolitan Government-Seoul National University Boramae Medical Center, 500 patients underwent VATS pulmonary resection between July 2020 and April 2023, while 43 patients underwent VATS thymectomy between January 2020 and April 2023. After exclusion, 224 patients were enrolled for VATS major pulmonary resection, and 38 were enrolled for VATS thymectomy. ArtiSential forceps were utilized in 35 of the 224 patients undergoing pulmonary resection and in 12 of the 38 individuals undergoing thymectomy. Early clinical outcomes were retrospectively analyzed.
Results:
No significant differences were observed in sex, age, surgical approach, operation time, histological diagnosis, or additional procedures between the patients who underwent surgery using novel articulating instruments and the group treated with conventional endoscopic instruments for both VATS major pulmonary resection and thymectomy.However, the use of the novel articulating endoscopic forceps was associated with a significantly larger number of dissected lymph nodes (p=0.028) and lower estimated blood loss (p=0.009) in VATS major pulmonary resection.
Conclusion
Major pulmonary resection and thymectomy via VATS using ArtiSential forceps were found to be safe and effective, with early clinical outcomes comparable to established methods. Further research into long-term clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness is warranted.
