1.Apoptosis of Fas Expressed Target Cells Induced by Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes.
Korean Journal of Immunology 1997;19(2):245-262
Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) playing an important role in e cell-mediated immune response kill the target cells by the special contact-dependent mechanism. It has been known that CTL and NK cells utilize two different pathways in removing specific target cells: apoptotic cell death and osmotic lysis by the pore forming protein. Interaction of CTL with target cells results in the ligand-induced, receptor-mediated, nonsecretory lytic process and lethal hit is delivered by the transducing molecule, Fas (CD95, APO-1), one of the TNFR/NGFR superfamily. In addition, ligation of TNF receptor and CD40 also induced the apoptosis of B cell and epithelial cells. However, recognition of target cells, the triggering mechanism, cytotoxic mediators, internal metabolic pathway and signal transduction behind apoptosis remain undefined and have been elucidated only in part. ...continue...

Pulmonary agenesis is a very rare anomaly. It is defined as total absence of the pulmonary parenchyma, vascular structures, and bronchi beyond the carina. We experienced a case of right pulmonary agenesis in association with other congenital defects who died at 1 day of age. The other defects included: esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, cardiac malformation, anal atresia and a malformed left thumb. The cardiac malformations were a type of Pentalogy of Fallot, composed of right ventricular hypertrophy, ventricular septal defect, an overiding of aorta, pulmonary atresia, and an atrial septal defect. Hand roentgenograms of the malformed left thumb showed an unarticulated metacarpopharyngeal joint. This unique combination of anomalies is extremely rare.

Sex cord tumor with annular tubules (SCTAT) is a rare ovarian neoplasm which usually occurs in two forms. In patients associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, the tumors are usually small, bilateral or multifocal, and show benign clinical course. However, tumors from patients without the syndrome are often large, usually unilateral, and rarely show malignant behavior. Serous surface papillary carcinoma (SSPC) is an aggressive neoplasm which involves peritoneal linings, including ovarian surface. Recently, we encountered a case of an unusual combination of SCTAT and SSPC in the ovary of a 55-year-old Korean woman presented with abdominal distention for one year. Systemic review and physical examination were within normal limit, except for abdominal discomfort and distention. There was no stigmata of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in all diagnostic examinations, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Pelvic computed tomography showed adnexal mass with multiple peritoneal nodules. Exploration revealed uterine and ovarian surfaces covered with multiple, yellow-white papillary nodules. However, the sizes of both ovaries were within normal limit. Typical serous papillary carcinomas were identified in nodules from peritoneum and ovarian surfaces. Well-circumscribed columnar epithelial cell nests composed of ring-shaped tubules encircling hyalinized basement membrane-like materials were found in the ovary away from serous surface papillary carcinoma.
