Herpes zoster represents the reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus located in the dorsal root ganglion. The virus multiplies and migrates to the skin surface producing a characteristic, usually painful, pustular eruption. Severe pain during the acute phase of herpes zoster has been associated with a higher risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia. Sympathetic ganglion blocks have been used for patients in the acute phase of herpes zoster to alleviate pain and prevent postherpetic neuralgia. We experienced 2 cases of patients with acute herpes zoster in which one of them presented with pain localized to the dermatomal distribution of L2-3, the other T3. The authors report the results achieved in treatment of the herpes zoster patients, using radiofrequency thermocoagulation of the sympathetic ganglion.

The thermostability of the inulinase was studied in this resea rc h. Some alcoholic materials and thickening agent could enhance the thermostabli lity of the inulinase. Using glycerol、xanthic pastern and though orthogonal ex periments of three elements and three levels, a satisfying protective agent, whi ch included glycerin(6%), xanthan gum(0.6%) and CaCl_2 (100mmol/mL) and ha d a significant effect on the enhancement of the inulinase thermostability, was acquired.

Objective To investigate the genotype of metallo-?-lactamases (MBL) produced by carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pediatric patients.Methods 59 strains of resistance to imipenem or meropenem were collected from December 2003 to November 2005 in Beijing children's hospital.Isolates were further evaluated for MBL production by two screening methods.MBL Etest strips were used to screen the phenotype of MBL production.Molecular screening for blaVIM,blaIMP,blaSPM and blaGIM was carried out using primers targeting the conserved regions of the MBL genes.The PCR fragments obtained with integron primers were sequenced on both strands.The nucleotide sequences were compared with sequences available over the Internet.Results Of the 59 carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa included in this study,29 (49.2%)were MBL positive using Etest methods,and 39 (66.1%) of these tested positive for MBL genes by PCR.35 (89.7%) were positive for blaIMP genes and 4 (10.3%) were positive for blaVIM genes.All isolates were negative for SPM and GIM DNA sequencing revealed that the IMP-1 was detected in 35 IMP-producing isolates,and VIM-2 was detected in 4 VIM-producing isolates.Conclusions This study has demonstrated that MBL-producing strains in pediatric are more common than in adult.IMP-1-producing strains are the main in pediatric,and VIM-2-producing strains concurred.The production of MBL is one of the important reasons of carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pediatric.It is very important to monitor the production of MBL.

Objective To evaluate the effects of Amplatz thrombectomy device (ATD), thrombolysis (TL), and surgical thrombectomy (TX) on venous wall morphology complicated with acute femoral vein thrombosis in dogs. Methods The femoral venous thrombosis model was induced in 36 adult mongrel dogs. The thrombosed veins were treated with ATD ( n =12), TL ( n =12), and TX ( n =12), respectively. Results Clearance of thrombus was successful in all cases. One week after treatment, the rate of venous patency in ATD, TL, and TX group was 75%, 33%, and 25%, respectively ( P

Objective To explore the impact of cognitive training on cognitive function of the elderly in a community. Methods Ninety elderly people at and above sixty years old in a community of Shanghai were recruited in the study, and were divided into two groups: the cognitive training group and the control group.The cognitive training group conducted cognitive training for 12 weeks (24 times), a comprehensive training method incorporating cognitive training courses with Lumosity ( a brain functional exercise software) .The two groups were evaluated before and after the intervention with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale ( MoCA) . Results Before the intervention, the scores of four fields ( i.e. visual space and executive function, naming, delayed recall, and directional force) and the total score for the cognitive training group were higher than the control group ( P <0 .05 );there was no statistically significant difference in other three fields ( i.e.attention, language ability and abstract ability) between the two groups (P>0.05).After the intervention, the scores of four fields (i.e.visual space and execu-tive function, attention, abstract, delayed recall) and the total score for the cognitive group improved, compared with the control group ( P<0 .05 ) . Conclusion Cognitive training could improve or maintain cognitive function for the elderly in the community.

This study was aimed to clone mouse adam10 gene promoter and construct its dual luciferase report vector, and to investigate its transcriptional activity. Total DNA was extracted from mouse brain and used for amplifying the fragment containing adam10 gene promoter by PCR. The amplified product was inserted into pGL-4.10 vector to construct pGL4.10-adam10. The pGL4.10-adam10 and control plasmid pGL4.74 were co-transfected into HEK293 FT cells by lipofectamine 2000. The activity of adam10 gene promoter was assayed by luciferase system. The results showed that the recombinant plasmid pGL4.10-adam10 containing promoter of mouse adam10 was correctly constructed. The method was optimized by changing ratio of two plasmids. Moreover, the transcriptional activity of pGL4.10-adam10 stimulated by ionomycin increased. It is concluded that the dual luciferase reporter system is successfully established, which is useful in bioluminescence imaging technology in vitro. The effect of ionomycin can enhance the transcriptional activity of adam10 gene promoter.

OBJECTIVETo explore the silencing effect of short hairpin RNA (shRNA) on the CD28 of mice T lymphocytes by CD28-shRNA expressing plasmid evaluate the interfering effects (chronology and stability) mediated by shRNA and select out the most efficient CD28 shRNA sequence.

METHODSThree CD28 specific and one non-specific shRNA expressing plasmids were constructed and then transfected separately into mice spleen T lymphocytes. Non-transfected cells and non-specific shRNA were taken as controls. Inhibitory effect of CD28 shRNA was demonstrated by real-time quantitative PCR and Western blots. The sequence of the highest RNA interference (RNAi) efficacy was screened.

RESULTS(1) CD28 shRNA expressing plasmids were successfully constructed; (2) Three CD28 specific shRNAs effectively inhibited the expression of CD28 at the mRNA and protein levels, and there was a statistically significant difference comparing with the controls (P < 0.01): The copies of CD28 in mice spleen cells at the mRNA levels were persistently decreased by 99.62%, 99.89% and 99.80% respectively after 20 days, and so did at the protein level [(84.90 +/- 0.65)%, (96.49 +/- 0.03)%, (91.76 +/- 0.32)% respectively]. The highest inhibitory rate was in CD28 shRNA-2 group.

CONCLUSIONS(1) Specific shRNA can mediate long-term and stable silencing effects on CD28 gene; (2) shRNAs matching different sites of CD28 gene exert differential inhibitory effects.

OBJECTIVETo know about content of iodine in foods sold in Tianjing markets presently, and the iodine nutrition conditions in college students. It was also aimed to probe the functions of the iodized salt complement with the dietary iodine intake, and whether the urine iodine could reflect dietary iodine intake.

METHODS278 food samples in markets were collected by a randomly stratified sampling method, while the arsenic-cerium catalytic contact method was used to determine the content in food. The dietary information of students for seven days was recorded, and the urine iodine was determined through the arsenic-cerium catalytic spectrophotometry.

RESULTSThe determination of 47 kinds and 278 food samples indicated that the content of iodine within animal foods (7.8 microg/100 g - 30.8 microg/100 g) was higher than that within plant foods (1.8 microg/100 g - 16.1 microg/100 g). The investigation also showed that students who regarded vegetarian food as principle accounted for 70. 19%. The amount of dietary iodine intake among those students, based on the dietary survey, was (111.67 +/- 53.18) microg/d, while supplementary iodine from iodized salt was about (230.27 +/- 45.55) microg/d. Therefore, the total iodine provided from diet would be (341.95 +/- 89.58) microg/d. Modified by urine creatinine, the median of urine iodine was 271.28 microg/gCr, and the urine iodine and dietary iodine intake was found positively related (r(s) = 0.463, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONSRegarding the vegetarian food as the principle, most of students investigated are not rich. The dietary iodine intake is lower than RDA (150 microg), but it can be obtained the iodized salt by 230. 27 microg, which is the possible supplement to the shortage from foods.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the failure of internal fixation on displaced femoral neck fractures in adults under fifty-five years old retrospectively inorder to pay more attention to the treatment of these fractures.

METHODSFrom Junary 2007 to June 2010,18 failed cases of internal fixation on displaced femoral neck fractures in adults under fifty-five years old were treated,there were 13 males and 5 females with an average age of (48.0 +/- 6.0) years old ranging from 27 to 55. Among them, 17 patients were treated with cannulated screws and 1 patient was treated with intramedullary nail; 16 patients were diagnosed as osteonecrosis and 2 patients as osteonecrosis associated with nonunion.

RESULTSThe average time from internal fixation to failure was 23 months (ranged, 8 to 32 months). The quality of fracture reduction in Garden index was poor. The Harris Hip Score was (56.0 +/- 12.5) (ranged,33 to 80). Eight cases of osteonecrosis and 2 cases of nonunion combinated osteonecrosis were received total hip arthroplasty. Hip resurfacing arthroplasty were performed for other 5 osteonecrosis. Because of no evident clinical symptoms,the other 3 cases received conservative treatment. The patients with total hip arthroplasty and hip resurfacing arthroplasty were followed-up for 34 months ranging from 12 to 53 months. After operation,the Harris score was (94.0 +/- 3.0) ranged 89 to 96.

CONCLUSIONOsteonecrosis is a common complication after internal fixation on displaced femoral neck fracture in adults under fifty-five years old. More attention should be paid to the treatment of displaced femoral neck fracture in those patients.
