2.Residual biliary stone removal using basket

Residual biliary stone can be effectively treated by nonoperative procedure using steerable catheter andbasket in the recent year. We analysed the 27 cases of residual biliary stone, which were refered to radiologydepartement of Yonsei University during last 2 years, from June 1982 to June 1984. The results as follows; 1. Thelocation of residual stones are extrahepatic in 14 cases (51.9%), intrahepatic in 5 cases(18.5%) and both intraand extrahepatic duct in 8 cases(29.6%). 2. In 13 of 27 cases(48.1%) were required multiple sessions. 3.Fragmentation of stone was done in 16(59.3%) in 27 cases. 4. Success rate in extrahepatic duct is 13 in 14casese(92.6%), intrahepatic duct 3 cases in 5(60%), and both intra and extrahepatic duct 7 in 8 cases(87.5%).Overal success rate in 27 cases is 85.2%

5.The Observation of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Roots in Horticultural Plants.

To determine the degree of variability among the host plant species in their abilities to become colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), the inoculum for AMF was collected from the various sites in Korea and was inoculated to the three horticultural plants; Tagetes patula, Torenia fournieri, and Salvia splendens. After 4-month growth under greenhouse, mycorrhizal root colonization rates and spore density were measured. The roots of T. patula showed higher colonization rate than both plants of T. fournieri and Salvia splendens. The mycorrhizal root colonization was influenced by both of the AM fungal inoculum and the host species or their interactions. The combination of the host and fungal species was suggested to be important for the application of AMF to horticultural crops.

7.Effects of Soils Containing Arbuscular Mycorrhizas on Plant Growth and Their Colonization.

Four arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) inocula collected from three arable sites in Korea were used to determine plant growth, mycorrhizal root colonization rate and spore production in three different host plant species; Sorghum bicolor, Allium fistulosum, Tagetes patula. Growth of plant treated with AMF differed from those without AMF. Different AMF inocula showed significantly different root colonization rates and spore production of AMF on the wild plants, A. fistulosum and T. patula, but did not on the cultivated plant, S. bicolor. Results suggested that indigenous mycorrhizal fungal community would be important factors in mycorrhizal symbiosis, and play important roles in the plant succession.

8.A Case of Band Heterotopia with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.

Band heterotopia is a rare neuronal migration disorder, resulting in epilepsy and mental retardation. Epilepsy in band heteropopia, of which Lennox-Gastaut syndrome constituted about 20%, varied in nature and degree of severity. Band heterotopia can be diagnosed by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), showing another diffuse layer of gray matter underlying the normal-looking cortex with intervening thin rim of white matter. While positron emission tomography (PET) with [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose revealed glucose uptake similar to the overlying cortex, single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) findings of band heterotopia have not been reported. We report a 8-year-old girl who presented with variable types of generalized seizures and mild mental retardation. She was diagnosed as having band heterotopia with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome by MRI and interictal electroencephalogram (EEG) showing immature background and generalized 2 Hz slow spike and wave complexes. Interictal SPECT, using Tc 99m hexamethyl propylenamine oxime (Tc 99m-HMPAO), revealed the same degree of perfusion in both the areas of band heterotopia and the overlying cortex. By using valproate and lamotrigine, she is now in stable condition with a significant decrease in seizure frequency.

10.A Case of Acute Poststreptococcal Glomerulonephritis Accompanied with Acute Pyelonephritis.

Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis(APSGN) is the most common form of postinfectious glomerulonephritis, and acute pyelonephritis(APN) is the most severe form of urinary tract infection in childhood. However, the concurrence of two diseases is uncommon in the literature. We describe a case of APSGN accompanied with APN in a 5-year-old female who presented with fever, left flank pain, headache and facial edema. Urinalysis showed pyuria, microscopic hematuria, and mild proteinuira. Serial urine cultures grew Escherichia coli. (99m)Tc-DMSA renal scan revealed a cortical defect in the upper pole of left kidney. She had a history of preceding pharyngitis, in addition, showed high blood pressure, high anti-streptolysin O titer, and low serum complement levels. The patient improved completely with supportive treatment, including antibiotic and antihypertensive therapy. These findings suggested that APSGN and APN could be manifested simultaneously or be superimposed on each other.
