1.Bone Mineral Density in patients with Intertrochanteric Fracture of the Femur.

The bone mineral density (BMD) has been measured for evaluation of the osteoporosis. Of the various methods of measuring the BMD, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) has been known to be an accurate, objective, and easily reproducible method. The authors measured BMD in patients with intertrochanteric fracture of the femur for comparison with results in the normal control. The BMD was measured in thirty-two patients with intertrochanteric fracture by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry from March 1993 to March 1995. And the relationship between the severity of osteoporosis and intertrochanteric fracture of the femur was studied. The comparison of BMD between fracture patients and normal control was done in the population below 79 years old of age (23 fracture patients and 90 normal controls). The average BMD in the intertrochanteric fracture group was 0.558g/cm2 in the neck, 0.425g/cm2 in Ward's triangle and 0.568g/cm2 in the trochanter, while in the normal control group it was 0.870g/cm2 in the neck, 0.681g/cm2 in Ward s triangle and 0.772g/cm2 in the trochanter. In comparison with the normal control group, the BMD in fracture group was about 79% of the normal control group. The BMD in the proximal femur was decreased by about 14% with the age increasing decennially after 50 years. The BMD at Ward s triangle and trochanter was much lower in type III and IV of Tronzo classification than in type I and II .The BMD did not show significant correlation with the height and weight of the patients.

3.Studies on the intradermal test of Clonorchis peptide(CPT) Antigen 1. Preliminary report.

Polypeptide antigen as isolated from adult worms of Clonorchis sinensis by means of diluted HCl-extraction method. Preliminary intradermal examination with those polypeptide antigen(CPT) were performed on patients of clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis and metagonimiasis and the result of the intradermal test with CPT antigen were compared with those of Clonorchis protein fraction(CPF) and Veronal buffer saline extraction (VBS) antigen. The result of the examination were summerized as follows: When 0.05 ml (1 microgram) of CPT was injected intradermally, the positive intradermal reaction appeared in 42.7 per cent (37 of 82) on the patients of clonorchiasis. The sizes of the wheal and erythema with CPT antigen was smaller than that of CPF and VBS antigen. Intradermal reaction with CPT antigen was carried out for other parasitic diseases, such as paragonimiasis and metagonimiasis. The result indicated that CPT antigen may be showed no cross reactions. Clonorchiasis pateints who with negative reaction to CPT antigen, reacted negatively to CPF and VBS antigens.

7.Engineering therapeutic antibodies targeting G-protein–coupled receptors.

G-protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs) are one of the most attractive therapeutic target classes because of their critical roles in intracellular signaling and their clinical relevance to a variety of diseases, including cancer, infection and inflammation. However, high conformational variability, the small exposed area of extracellular epitopes and difficulty in the preparation of GPCR antigens have delayed both the isolation of therapeutic anti-GPCR antibodies as well as studies on the structure, function and biochemical mechanisms of GPCRs. To overcome the challenges in generating highly specific anti-GPCR antibodies with enhanced efficacy and safety, various forms of antigens have been successfully designed and employed for screening with newly emerged systems based on laboratory animal immunization and high-throughput-directed evolution.

9.Comparison of Embryonic Developmental Capacity by different Co-culture Time of Oocytes in IVF-ET Cycles.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether co-culture of oocytes on vero cell monolayers from Day 0 (Day 0 group) after egg retrieval results in an increase in developmental capacity such as fertilization rate, embryo quality, blastulation and clinical pregnancy rate compared with co-culture of oocytes from Day 1 (Day 1 group). METHODS: Sperms were treated with Hams F-10 supplemented with 10% human follicular fluid (hFF). Vero cells for co-culture were prepared in TCM-199 with 10% FBS. Oocytes were co-cultured from Day 0 and fertilized oocytes were co-cultured from Day 1 on vero cell monolayers in DMEM with 10% and 20% hFF, respectively after egg retrieval. On day 1, 2 and 5, fertilization rate and grade of embryos and blastocysts were evaluated. Results (fertilization rate, cleavage rate, grade of embryos and blastocysts and pregnancy rate) were considered statistically significant when p value was less than 0.05 using t-test and ci2. RESULTS: In sibling oocytes of same cycles, no differences were found in fertilization rate (94.6 vs. 91.4%), cleavage rates (94.6 vs. 91.4%), embryo grade (on day 2 and 3) and blastulation (65.6 vs. 57.0%) and their grade. In different oocytes of different cycles (patients), no differences were found in fertilization (79.8 vs. 78.3%), cleavage rates (77.7 vs. 76.4%) and blastulation (56.0 vs. 45.3%), but pregnancy rate was higher in the Day 0 group than in the Day 1 group (60.0 vs. 42.9%). CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that the embryonic development capacities were not affected by the different co-culture time in the sibling oocytes of same cycles. Although no statistical significance, because of small size of study, there was a trend for higher pregnancy rates in Day 0 group compared to Day 1 group in different oocytes of different cycles.

Steroid mvopathy is a skeletal muscle disease that develops in condition both endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoid excess and is characterized by muscle weakness. Myalgia, and wasting. The onset is usually insidious and the distribution of weakness is primarily proximal uith the legs more severely involved than the arms; cranial-nerve-in nervated muscles and sphin ers are usually spared. We report a 60-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis uho was managed by prednisone and dexamethasone over 20 years and showed progressive lower limb weakness afterwards.
