BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to survey hygiene behavior of healthcare personnel according to the Hygiene Inventory 23 (HI23) and to use the results in education and research for promoting hygiene behaviors. METHODS: We sampled a total of 400 people with 50 from each job category. The sample was obtained through convenient sampling among 8,200 employees working at a tertiary-care hospital with 2,600 beds in Seoul. The HI23 consisted of 5 subscales and 8 questions on general hygiene, 3 on household hygiene, 3 on food-related hygiene, 5 on hand hygiene methods, and 4 on personal hygiene, resulting in a total of 23 questions. The researcher also added 14 questions on the general characteristics of the subjects. The self-administered questionnaires were distributed on October 2009 and analyzed blindly. RESULTS: The average total score for hygiene behavior was 3.04+/-0.44 (maximum of 4). In the subcategory of hygiene behavior, the mean score was 3.20+/-4.24 for general hygiene, 3.07+/-0.68 for household hygiene, 3.07+/-0.68 for food-related hygiene, 2.91+/-0.69 for hand hygiene methods, and 2.97+/-0.48 for personal hygiene. When factors affecting the level of hygiene behavior were identified through multivariate regression analysis, independent factors were found to be gender (female), job category (food-related job), experience in hand hygiene education, and experience in teaching hand hygiene or general hygiene. CONCLUSION: Programs and education adapted to the characteristics of each job category in hospitals are needed to promote hygiene behaviors such as general hygiene, hand hygiene methods, household hygiene, food-related hygiene, and personal hygiene.

An immunohistochemical study on the tissue localization of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), human placental lactogen (HPL), and human pregnancy specific bata-1 glycoprotein (SP-1) in the non-neoplastic (5 incomplete abortion, 5 ectopic pregnancy) and neoplastic (hydatidiform mole 3 cases, 5 ectopic pregnancy) and neoplastic (hydatidiform mole 3 cases, choriocarcinoma 2 cases) gestational status, and germ cell tumors of the ovary (dysgerminoma 2 cases, immature teratoma 1 case) and the testis (seminoma 2 cases, endodermal sinus tumor 1 case) by means of sensitive peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. The results were as follows. 1) Cytoplasmic HCG, HPL, and SP-1 were readily identified in syncytiotrophoblasts of chorionic villi of the incomplete abortion and ectopic pregnancy, as moderate to strong positive reactions. In the cytoplasm of the neoplastic syncytiotrophblasts of hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma, positive reactions were stronger than in non-neoplastic syncytiotrophblasts. but the cytotrophoblasts and villous stromal cells showed negative reactions to these hormones. 2) All of the tumor cells of dysgerminoma and immature teratoma of the ovary, and seminoma and endodermal sinus tumor of the testis showed negative reactions to HCG, HPL, and SP-1. According to these results, HCG, HPL, and SP-1 are specifically synthesized and secreted by normal or neoplastic syncytiotrophoblasts Malignant tumors originated from other cells or tissues than trophoblastic cells show elevated serum concentration of these hormones are only evident in the presence of syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells among the tumor cells.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1987;25(6):787-790
We report two cases of nonvenereal sclerosing lymphangitis of the penis in a 34-year old man and a 28-year-old man. This disorder is an uncommon condition characterized by asymptomatie, firm, cord-like lesion of unknown etiology. Histopathologic findings reveal hypertrophy and sclerosis of lymphatic vessel walls, and some cases show thrombus formation within dilated vessels. Both cases had typical clinical and histopathologic features. In case I, the lesion resolved spontaneously on several occasions for 10 years. Therefore we argue that some individual may be predisposed to develop the condition, perhaps because of anatomical variation.

Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1996;29(1):103-112
We studied the association of nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness with general characteristics, exposure concentration, respiratory symptoms, chest x-ray findings, past histories and pulmonary function. We determined bronchial hyperresponsiveness by methacholine challenge test. And we conducted a respiratory symptom questionnaire and performed spirometry on 111 workers occupationally exposed to isocyanates in various industries. About 21.6% of subjects had bronchial hyperresponsiveness. No significant differences were observed between the hyperresponsive and non-responsive group with respect to age, sex, employment period, height, and smoking histories cough and breathlessness were significantly associated with the bronchial hyperresponsiveness. The hyperresponsive group had more experience of bronchitis and asthma in the past than the non-responsive group. The lower FEV1 and FEV1 % were closely related with bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Bronchial hyperrespoosiveness seems to be associated with some of respiratory symptoms, past histories and pulmonary function parameters in workers exposed to isocyanates.
