In the following report, we describe the case of a rapidly skeletonized corpse discovered in late summer. On the first day of September, a 57-year-old man was found almost completely skeletonized on a hill behind his house. His body lay prone, accompanied by a brush cutter at the entrance to the graveyard where his friend's parents were buried. His cap, clothes, and rubber boots were all intact and undamaged. Upon autopsy, no definite abnormalities were identified except for an old linear fracture on the frontoparietal bone. According to his friends and neighbors, he had likely died 8 or 9 days prior to the discovery of his body.

To establish predictors of prognosis and recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative resection, retrospective analyses of clinical and pathologic factors were done in 85 hepatectomized patients of HCC. The median follow-up duration was 30.5(range: 3-134) months. Two postoperative mortalities and five palliative resections were excluded from analysis of recurrence. The overall 1, 3, 5 year survival rates in 85 patients were 78.6%, 63.6%, 45.6%. The 1, 3, 5 year survival rates in 78 curative resections were 81.8%, 70.2%, 50.3%. The 1, 2, 3 year survival rates of the palliative resections(5 cases) were 60%, 20%, 0%. The 1, 3, 5 year recurrence-free survival rates in the curative resections were 64.4%, 43.2%, 27.5%. Included prognostic variables were age, gender, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, serum alpha-FP level, ICG-R15, diabetes, preoperativeTACE, tumor size, tumor capsulation, number of tumors, vascular invasion, tumor histologic grading, stage of the chronic hepatitis, and anatomic resection. The significant factors affecting recurrence were number of tumors and vascular invasion.

We report a case of spinal subdural abscess spreading from a epidural abscess. A 70-year-old man was hospitalized for a mild fever, chill and severe back pain. Neurological examination on admission revealed back pain with numbness, sensory deficiency on left lower extremity and without bowel or bladder dysfunction. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) showed pyogenic spondylitis on L1, 2, 3 with epidural abscess. A patient was treated by empiric antibiotic therapy for 6 weeks. Six weeks later, follow-up MRI showed that the pyogenic spondylitis with epidural abscess had decreased, but a cylinder like subdural abscess after arachnoiditis. After surgery, the majority of the initial symptoms were relieved except a mild both lower extremities numbness.

The role of the periosteum on osteointegration of Bio-Oss(R)(Geistlich, Wolhusen/Switzerland) was studied in rabbit calvarial defect. 12 New Zealand white male rabbits between 2.8 and 4 kg were included in this randomized, blinded, prospective study. Each rabbit was anesthetized with Ketamine HCl(5 mg/kg) and Xylazine HCl(1.5 ml/kg). An incision was made to the bony cranium and the periosteum was reflected. Using a 6-mm trephine bur(3i. USA), four 8-mm defects were created with copious irrigation. The defects were classified into barrier membrane(Tefgen(R), Lifecore Biomedical, Inc, U.S.A.) only group as a control, Bio-Oss(R) with barrier membrane group, Bio-Oss(R) with periosteum covering group, and Bio-Oss(R) without periosteum covering group. There were 2 rabbits in each group. The wound was closed with resorbable suture materials. Rabbits were sacrificed using phentobarbital(100 mg/kg) intravenously at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after surgery. The samples were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde, and decalcified in hydrochloric acid decalcifying solution(Fisher Scientific, Tustin, CA) at 4degrees C for 2-4 weeks. It was embedded in paraffin and cut into 6 micrometer thickness. The sections were stained with H & E and observed by optical microscope. The results were as follows; 1. The periosteum played an important role in osteointegration of Bio-Oss(R) in bone defects. 2. When the periosteum remained intact and Bio-Oss(R) was placed on the defect, Bio-Oss(R) with periosteum covering has been incorporated into the newly formed bone from 2-week postoperatively. 3. When the periosteum was removed at the surgical procedure, invasion of connective tissue took place among the granules, and new bone formation was delayed compared to periosteum covering group. Therefore, when the bone grafting was performed with periosteal incision procedure to achieve tension-free suture, the integrity of the overlying periosteum should be maintained to avoid fibrous tissue ingrowth.
