Journal of the Korean Surgical Society 2010;79(Suppl 1):S1-S6
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a baptist electronic Nutritional Screening Program (B-eNSP) that could be easily used to identify patients with nutrition at risk or malnutrition on their admission to hospital using an integrated medical information system and to evaluate validity, reliability and efficiency of B-eNSP. METHODS: From June 1 2009 to June 21 2009, we enrolled 496 patients for prospective research. We analyzed age, sex, weight, height, weight loss in the last 3 months, serum albumin, alteration of dietary intake, gastrointestinal symptom, functional capacity, diagnosis and its relationship to nutritional requirements, physical examination and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). B-eNSP included body mass index (BMI), weight loss in the last 3 months, serum albumin. Each component was scored. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated to evaluate the validity of the B-eNSP. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn by using B-eNSP to choose a cut-off value that maximizes sensitivity and specificity and Yoden Index. Comparison with SGA and the reliability of the B-eNSP was done using kappa statistics. RESULTS: The maximum Yoden Index was 0.866 and the cut-off value of the ROC curve was 2. A B-eNSP score higher than 2 was defined as nutrition at risk or malnutrition. Reliability of the B-eNSP was in accordance with SGA by kappa 0.845. CONCLUSION: The B-eNSP can be used efficiently to identify patients with nutrition at risk or malnutrition by simply using an integrated medical information system.

Objective To investigate the protective effects of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) on acute lung injury (ALI) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).Methods Fourty-five rats were randomly (random number) assigned to three groups, namely control group, model group, and rHuEPO group.ALI was induced by intravenous injection of LPS (6 mg/kg).The rHuEPO (5000 U/kg) was injected intravenously into rats 60 min before LPS challenge. The general status of rats was observed.Twelve hours after modeling, the rats were sacrificed and the tissue samples including lung tissue and blood were collected.PaO2,PaCO2,pH,the lung wet/dry weight ratio, plasma cytokines [interleukin (IL) IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)],and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) were detected.Cytokines were assayed with ELISA method.Pathological changes of lung tissues were observed under light microscope and transmission electron microscopy. Results (1) Compared with the control group,PaO2,pH in the model group and in the rHuEPO group were significantly lower (P < 0.05),and PaCO2 were significantly higher (P < 0.05).Compared with the model group,PaO2,pH in the rHuEPO group were significantly higher (P < 0.05),and PaCO2 were significantly lower (P < 0.05).(2) Compared with the control group, the W/D weight ratio of lung tissues in the model group and the rHuEPO group was significantly higher (P < 0.05).Compared with the model group, the W/D weight ratio of lung tissues in the rHuEPO group significantly lower (P < 0.05).(3) The levels of TNF-o,IL-6 and iNOS in serum of rats in the control group were lower than those in the model group and the rHuEPO group (P <0.01).The serum levels of TNF-α,IL-6 and iNOS of rats in the rHuEPO group were significantly lower compared with the model group (P < 0.01).(4) The light microscopy and the transmission electron microscopy showed the model group had histopathologic changes with acute diffuse lung injury manifested by intra-alveolar hemorrhage, exudate, inflammatory cells infiltration,Ⅰ type and Ⅱ type epithelial cell necrosis and detachment, and the pathological changes of lung tissue in the rHuEPO group were not as serious as those in the LPS group, showing only a little inflammatory cells infiltration of focal alveoli. Conclusions Recombinant human erythropoietin can inhibit the genesis of TNF-α,IL-6 and iNOS in serum, modifying the inflammatory response and providing protective effects against acute lung injury induced by sepsis.

Journal of Korean Society of Spine Surgery 2013;20(2):35-43
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sagittal alignment of cervical spine in AIS. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Little has been known about the sagittal curve patterns of cervical spine in AIS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-hundred-thirty-three AIS patients were checked by scanographs and followed up for more than 2 years were divided into cervical kyphosis (> or =+5degrees), lordosis (< or =-5degrees) and straight (-4degrees~+4degrees) groups according to the sagittal curves of cervical spine (C2~C7). Each group was evaluated for thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, sagittal balance and Cobb's angle on coronal plane. Of the patients, 49 were treated by braces, 84 were surgically corrected (rod derotation in 52, direct vertebral rotation (DVR) in 32). RESULTS: At the initial radiographs, cervical kyphosis was found in 97, lordosis in 23 and straight in 13 patients. In the kyphosis group, cervical kyphosis showed typical patterns of angular kyphosis. Thoracic and upper T-kyphosis (T1~T5) were lower than those in the cervical lordosis group (p=0.000, 0.001, respectively.) Other factors showed no significant differences between the groups. Patients treated by conservative management or by rod derotation had no significant differences in cervical kyphosis during the follow-up periods, though the thoracic hypokyphosis was surgically corrected. On the contrary, patients who were treated by DVR restored cervical lordosis (14/32=43.8%) from initial state showed significant differences in both conservative and rod derotation groups (p=0.008, 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Cervical kyphosis in AIS was a compensatory curve correlated with both thoracic hypokyphosis and rotational deformity. Rotational corrections should be considered during the surgical treatment.

Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing 2007;18(4):523-534
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identity the effects of a tailored health promotion program on rural residents' self efficacy, health problems and quality of life. METHOD: Data were collected from May 13th, 2006 to July 29th, 2006. The subjects were selected at Gajo-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeonsangbuk-do, Korea. Forty three residents were included in the experimental group and 39 in the control group. The 12-week health promotion program was given to the experimental group. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi2-test, t-test and ANCOVA test with the SPSS/Win 12.0 program. RESULT: The experimental group showed higher scores of self efficacy and quality of life than the control group, and a lower score of health problem than the control group. CONCLUSION: From the above results, it can be concluded that the tailored health promotion program for rural residents is an effective intervention for improving their self efficacy and quality of life and reducing their health problems. Therefore, it is necessary to spread the tailored health promotion program for residents in other rural areas in Korea.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1992;28(3):327-331
To evaluate characteristic CT findings of orbital pseudotumor and to define differentialpoints from other pathology, the authors retrospectively reviewed CT of 19 patients who were prooen to have orbital pseudotumor by clinical course and, in some cases, biopsy. A variety of CT findings including extraocular muscle thickening(11 cases), streaky infiltration of retroorbital fat(11 cases), mass formation(10 cases), optic nerve thickening (6 cases), conjunctival thickening (5 cases), scleral thickening(4cases), enlarged lacrimal gland(4 cases) and destruction of orbital bone (2 cases) were observed. Thickening of the anterior portion and irregular margin were characteristic findings of extraocular muscle and optic nerve lesions. Mass formation predominantly occurs in the anterior portion of the orbit. In most cases more than two orbital structures are involved by lesion.
