PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a positive psychology-based and character strengths-integrated activity program for elders living alone in rural areas, and then to examine the effectiveness of the program. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design with a nonequivalent control group was used. The participants included 59 elders in total, of whom 30 were assigned to the experimental group and 29 to the control group. positive psychology-based and character strengths-integrated activity program for elders consists of sixty-minute sessions held twice per week during 6 weeks, hence 12 sessions in total. RESULTS: There were significant differences between the experimental and control groups in depression, vitality and life satisfaction (all p<.001). CONCLUSION: The positive psychology-based and character strengths-integrated activity program for elders living alone in rural areas is effective in that it decreased the degree of depression and increased the vitality and life satisfaction in the participants.

Objective To investigate the possible correlation between chronic periodontitis(CP)and chronic renal failure(CRF)by establishing chronic periodontitis and chronic renal failure model in SD rats. Methods Forty health male SD rats were divided into four groups: control group(A), CP group(B), CRF group(C), CP accompany with CRF group(D). Ten rats were sacrificed in every group at the end of week 8. The periodontal index, levels of serum Scr and BUN, the concentration of IL-1β and TNF-α were examined. The severity CP and CRF was quantified by histopathology. The date was statistically analyzed. Results Animal models were established successfully. Scr and BUN in group D, BUN were higher than that in group C[Scr(120.54±21.29)junol/L vs(93.63±18.82)u,mol/L, BUN(34.20±14.44)mmol/L vs(17.77±4.15)mmol/L, P<0.05]. The kidney change of inflammation was observed in group B, the grade of PAS and Masson in group C and D were higher than that in group A(P<0.01), and that in group D was higher than group C(P<0.05). Obvious inflammation of periodontal tissue was observed in group B and D. Attachment loss level(AL)in group D was higher than that in group B[(173.60± 16.75)μm vs(124.00±23.87)μm, P<0.05]. The level of IL-lβ and TNF-α in group B and C and D were higher than that in group A(P<0.05), and IL-lβ in group D was higher than that in group B and C(P<0.05), TNF-a in group D was higher than that in group B(P<0.05). 2×2 factorial design revealed that there were interactions between CP and CRF on the numerus of Scr and BUN and AL P<0.05), and the influence of each factor on that was significant(P<0.05), no interactions were noted between CP and CRF on IL-1β and TNF-α(P>0.05), but the influence of each factor on that was significant(P<0.05). Conclusions The SD rat models can appear chronic periodontitis and chronic renal failure at the same time. There is correlation between chronic periodontitis and chronic renal failure. Chronic periodontitis can aggravate chronic renal failure throngh the role of inflammation.

Synovial sarcoma is a distinct and generally recognized soft tissue tumor that it’s origin still raises controversy. The synovial origin of synovial sarcoma has not been determined despite the accepted terminology implying synovium as stem cell. Three cases of primary synovial sarcoma (2 fibrous monophasic, 1 biphasic type) were studied with a panel of antibodies against different types of cytokeratin and other markers (EMA, CEA, vimentin, S-100 protein, lysozyme, 1-antichymotrypsin). Spindle shaped-cell in monophasic synovial sarcoma showed reactivity for CK7 and pancytokeratin. Epithelial cells lining of glands in biphasic synovial sarcoma reactive for CK7, pancytokeratin, EMA, and focally CEA but spindle cells only positive for vimentin. By electron microscopy, fibrous monophasic synovial sarcoma showed pseudogland formation with intercellular junctions of paired subplasmalemmal destiny and discontinuous basal lamina. These results indicate that synovial sarcoma showes epithelial differentiation. We believe that synovial sarcoma arises in pluripotential connective tissue cells that is able to be differentiated into both mesenchymal and epithelial components. So, synovial sarcoma have been considered carcinosarcoma of soft tissues depending on the type of differentiation.

Purpose: Despite the importance of mental health-related quality of life among workers, its comprehensive understanding is lacking. This study aimed to identify influencing factors regarding mental health-related quality of life through a comprehensive literature review. Methods: The integrative review method of Whittemore and Knaf was used. Data search was conducted on papers published before September 2020, and RISS, NDSL, and KISS were used for the search. Results: Fourteen studies were selected for analysis. Five factors affecting the mental health-related quality of life of workers were found. Mental and physical health status, job stress, working environment, health behaviors, and other personal and socio-economic characteristics were significant influencing factors. Conclusion Findings from the review suggest the necessity of developing a customized intervention program to improve the mental health-related quality of life of workers.

BACKGROUND: Histamine, released from mast cells in atheromatous plaque, has been known to cause cardiac ischemia or sudden cardiac death in atherosclerosis patient. Previous reports have suggested that histamine induced coronary vasoconstriction was due to increase in IP(3) and DAG, which induce release of Ca2+ from SR and increase the Ca2+ sensitivity of contractile element via activation of PKC. Recently, it was reported that application of histamine cause depolarization of intestinal smooth muscle, which may contribute to histamine-induced contraction via augmenting Ca2+ influx through activation of Ca2+ channels. However, the underyling mechanism of histamine-induced depolarization and its contribution to the magnitude of coronary vasoconstriction are still uncertain. METHOD: To elucidate the underlying mechanism of Ca2+ influx change during histamine-induced vasoconstriction, we examined the effect of Ca2+ channel antagonist and PKC blocker on histamine-induced contractions, and then measured the effect of PKC antagonist on whole cell K+ current using patch clamping method in rabbit coronary smooth muscle cells. RESULTS: Application of histamine induced phasic and tonic constraction of coronary rings via activation of H(1) receptors. Pretreatment of Ca2+ channel antagonist (nifedipine, 1 microM) or PKC blockers (10 nM staurosporine and 10 microM Go6976) markedly inhibited histamine-induced tonic contraction, which suggest that the magnitude of tonic contraction depend on the Ca2+ influx. Application of 4-AP, a blocker of voltage-dependent K+ channels, increased resting tone of coronary rings, and combined treatment of nifedipine blocked this 4-AP induced increase of resting tone. Application of active analoge of DAG (1,2-DiC(8)) significantly inhibited the activity of voltage-dependent K+ current in single smooth muscle cell, meanwhile the inactive analogue of DAG (1,3-DiC(8)) has no apparent effect on the activity of voltage-dependent K+ current. Furthermore, pretreatment of calphostin C (1 microM), a blocker of PKC, diminished the 1,2-DiC(8)-induced inhibition of K+ current. CONCLUSION: PKC dependent inhibition of voltage-dependent K+ current may be responsible for the maintaining of histamine-induced tonic contraction in rabbit coronary artery.
