Pterygium, a disease of unknown origin and pathogennesis, is a chronic condition characterized by the encroachment of triangular portion of the bulbar conjunctiva onto the cornea. We have studied the expression of extracellular matrix genes and oncogenes in cultured pterygium using Northernm dot, and slot blot hybridizations. Northern hybridization with total RNA isolated from passaged (4-8 passages) cultures demonstrated expression of genes for alpha1(I) and alpha1(III) procollagen, fibronectin, and c-Ha-ras, but no expression of gene for c-myc was observed. The pterygium exhibited significantly increased expression of alpha1(I) and alphal(III) procollagen genes when compared with normal control cells(p<0.01). And We observed there were no differences between pterygium and normal control cells in the expression of genes for fibronectin and c-Ha-ras. According to these results we thought that the causes of pterygium may be related to the increased expression of alpha1(I) and alphal(III) procollagen genes but may not be related to c-Ha-ras, c-myc, and fibronectin genes.

The purpose of this study is to compare 76 cases of fractures of the proximal humerus both clinically and radiologically which were treated at Pusan National University Hospital from January 1987 to December 1996. According to Neers classification, among the 76 patients, there were nine one-part fractures (11.8%), forty two-part fractures (52.6%), eighteen three-part fractures (23.7%), four four-part fractures (5.3%), and five head-splitting fractures (6.6%). In terms of treatment method, among the 76 patients, 49 patients (64.5%) were treated conservatively. Thirty seven patients (75.5%) of one-part and two-part fractures were treated conservatively, and twelve patients (54.5%) of three-part and four-part fractures were treated operatively. The results of the cases were rated by the Neer s assessment, 42 patients (85.7%) had excellent or satisfactory results in one-part and two-part fracture, and 7 patients (31.8%) had unsatisfactory or failed results in three-part and four-part fracture. Total cases with complications were 14 cases (18.4%). From the viewpoint of the type of fracture, the results in two-part and three-part fractures were much better than those of fourpart fractures. The joint stiffness which was the most common complication must be prevented by allowing the early motion of the joint to obtain a better result.

PURPOSE: To analyze the MR imaging features of multiple sclerosis (MS) in spinal cord. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine MR (magnetic resonance) images of six patients with suspected MS were retrospectively evaluated in active phase (n=6) and inactive phase (n=3) before and after Gadolinium-DTPA administration. RESULTS: In all patients with clinically active phase, plaques of spinal cord appeared as high signal intensity on T2-weighted image with isointense cord swelling on Tl-weighted images. All lesions were enhanced on Gd-DTPA enhanced Tl-weighted images. The patterns of enhancement were nodular, circumferential rim-like, and segmental. On follow-up images in 3 patients who became clinically stable, all enhancing lesions disappeared. CONCLUSION: MR is a good modality in detection of spinal MS, and Gd-DTPA-enhanced MR is valuable in differentiating active MS from stable MS.

BACKGROUND: Pruritus, which is a frequent accompanying symptom of dermatological diseases, is also common during pregnancy, either localized or generalized. It may be related to specific dermatoses of pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: A clinical study was performed to know the exact nature of pruritus in pregnancy. METHODS: Subjects with systemic diseases, or laboratory abnormalities were excluded. People who have had pruritic dermatologic diseases before pregnancy were also excluded. One hundred and fifty five pregnant women were interviewed with physical examinations and followed up to the date of delivery. Pruritus was graded. RESULTS: Pruritus was present in 31.6%. Most affected subjects had mild or moderate severity. The abdomen was the most common site. There was a tendency for the duration of itching to increase with the duration of pregnancy. CONCLUSION: Conclusion: These findings may provide basic and useful data on pruritus during pregnancy.

Mitral valvular prolapse (MVP) in dogs is characterized by myxomatous valvular degeneration, which is caused by abnormal valvular thickening and incomplete coaptation of the mitral valve leading to mitral regurgitation. Mitral regurgitation causes left atrial and left ventricular enlargement. Pathogenesis of the disease is unknown, although some studies have suggested the involvement of endothelin and systemic connective tissue diseases. Mitral valvular prolapse in dogs commonly occurs in aged small dog breeds, including Malteses and Shih Zhus. This case study investigated the clinical features of an affected Maltese family and performed pedigree analysis. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of putative familial mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation in Maltese dogs. All family members in this study showed degenerative valvular changes and echocardiographic features of mitral valvular prolapse. Although disease progression differed, all dogs progressed to advanced heart failure stage within 2-3 years after diagnosis. Therefore, this is the first study to identify putative familial mitral valve prolapse in Maltese dogs. This finding suggests strong genetic etiology involved in the development of degenerative mitral valve disease in Maltese dogs. Furthermore, this finding could be a valuable resource for the identification of gene mutations in dogs with familial mitral valvular prolapse.

During the period from 1988 to 1993, 86 cases of varicose vein in lower extremity were treated at Department of General surgery, Chonnam University Hospital. 36 outpatients were treated by compression sclerotherapy and 50 inpatients by surgery. The results were as follows ; 1) The prevalent age group were 4th and 5th decade. 2) The predisposing factors of varicose vein were profession requiring long time standing (48.8%), pregnancy (14%) and hereditary (4.7%), in order. 3) Varicose veins were located in the greater saphenous system (50%), the lesser saphenous system (46.5%) and both (3.5%). 4) The cardinal symptoms and signs were tortuosity of veins(100%), aching pain(29.1%), leg heaviness(14.0%), walking discomfort(8.1%) and leg edema(7.0%). 5) The used sclerosing agent was 5% ethanolamine oleate in compression sclerotherapy group and the operation method in surgery group was high ligation and vein stripping. 44.4% of patients treated initially by compression sclerotherapy and 80% of those treated surgically were given no further treatment. 6) The postoperative complications in surgery group were recurred or remained varicosity (5 cases), hematoma(2 cases), recurrent ulcer(1 case), wound dehiscence(1 case) and thrombophlebitis(1 case). 7) The complications in sclerotherapy group were recurred or remained varicosity(10 cases), induration and bluish discoloration(1 case).
