4.Unilateral Pulmonary Agenesis Combined with other Unusual Anomalies: An autopsy report.

Pulmonary agenesis is a very rare anomaly. It is defined as total absence of the pulmonary parenchyma, vascular structures, and bronchi beyond the carina. We experienced a case of right pulmonary agenesis in association with other congenital defects who died at 1 day of age. The other defects included: esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, cardiac malformation, anal atresia and a malformed left thumb. The cardiac malformations were a type of Pentalogy of Fallot, composed of right ventricular hypertrophy, ventricular septal defect, an overiding of aorta, pulmonary atresia, and an atrial septal defect. Hand roentgenograms of the malformed left thumb showed an unarticulated metacarpopharyngeal joint. This unique combination of anomalies is extremely rare.
5.Antibacterial Effects of Silver Electrodes Using Constant Current Electrolysis

In order to investigate the mechanism of antibacterial effect of electrical stimulation on bone and joint infection, 5, 50 and 500 µA constant currents were passed through the silver electrodes and stainless electrodes on the Brain Heart Infusion agar culture plates which contained Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Lscherichia coli. After 24 hours of incubation, the widths of inhibitory zone around the electrodes were measured. The broth dilution susceptibility test was also used to verify the antibacterial effects of electrically generated silver in the Brain Heart Infusion broth. The results were as follows. 1. Silver anodes using constant currents manifested antibacterial effects definitely on the three bacterias, but stainless anodes showed none. 2. Antibacterial effects of silver anodes on the three bacterias increased in proportion to current density. However, antibacterial effects were negligible when current density was under 2 nA/mm2. 3. When current density was between 6.6 and 660 nA/mm2, there were no statistically significant differences in the antibacterial effects among 5, 50 and 500µA constant currents. 4. The culture broth containing silver ions generated by constant current electrolysis also manifested antibacterial effects. The retentate showed stronger antibacterial effects than the filtrate. Form these results, following conclusions were drawh. 1. The antibacterial eff ct of silver electrode using constant current was due to silver ions rather than electricity itself. 2. The substance which showed most effective antibactericity effects was silver complex larger than 2,000 m.w. and heat-unstable.

6.A Case Report of Tumoral Calcinosis

Tumoral calcinosis was coined by Inclan in 1943 and thereafter about 40 cases have been reported in the literature, but there has not been reported on a case which involved knee joints. The majority of cases hitherto reported were found in Negro. There was no report in yellow race. Authors presented a case of tumoral calcinosis that involved boih knee joints of a 55 years old Korean housewife. On physical examination chronic draining sinuses with spontaneous extrusion of calcific material was noted on the left infrapatellar region. A radiograph of the both knees showed dense, multinodular deposits of calcium. The masses were confined to the soft tissues; the contiguous joint showed no pathological change. En-block excisianal biopsy was done. The histological section of the excised mass disclosed the foreign-body giant cell with inflamed connective tissue surrounding calcific deposits.

7.Physiologic Role of K+ Channels in Relaxation of Rabbit Corpus Cavernosal Tissue.

PURPOSE: Ion channels play key roles in determining smooth muscle tone by setting the membrane potential and allowing Ca2+ influx. Potassium channels may be important in modulating corporal smooth muscle tone. In this study, we investigated the effects of potassium channels in the rabbit corpus cavernosal smooth muscle by blocking them with various agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Strips of rabbit corpus cavernosum were prepared for mounting and isometric tension measurement in an organ bath. On cavernosal strips contracted with phenylephrine (PHE), sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was applied in increasing concentrations from 10(-7)M to 10(-4)M, causing dose-dependent relaxation. The effects of various potassium channel blockers on SNP-induced relaxation were then evaluated by measuring the tension of the cavernosal strips. The potassium channel blockers used were tetraethyl ammonium (TEA), charybdotoxin, gliben clamide, and apamin. RESULTS: The relaxation responses to SNP of the corporal preparations contracted in response to PHE were significantly attenuated by TEA (10(-2)M) and charybdotoxin (10(-7)M), with no significant difference observed between the two drugs. The SNP-induced relaxation responses were not significantly attenuated by glibenclamide (10(-5)M) or apamin (10(-5)M). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that maxi-K+ channels play an important role in corpus cavernosal relaxation. The KATP channel and small-conductance KCa channel are thought to be unrelated to corpus cavernosal smooth muscle relaxation.

10.Double Immunohistochemical Study on the Postnatal Development of Somatostatin - and Neuropeptide Y - Immunoreactive Neurons in Rat Cerebral Cortex.

The postnatal development of somatostatin [SOM]- and neuropeptide Y[NPY]- immunoreactive[ir] neurons were examined in rat cerebral cortex considering their coexistence in cortical neurons. Using double immunohistochemical staining for SOM and NPY with diaminobenzidine and benzidine dihydrochloride as chromogens, we subdivided immunoreactive cells into double-labeled SOM/NPY-, SOM only-, and NPY only-ir neurons. Interestingly, SOM/NPY- and SOM only-ir neurons were detectable even at the day of birth, in contrast to NPY only-ir cells which first appeared in most cortices from two weeks of age. The morphological features of double-labeled SOM/NPY neurons were not identical to those SOM only- and NPY only-ir neurons. No apparent changes in the shape and size of single-labeled neurone occurred with age ; throughout their postnatal life they were round and ovoid, had a thin rim of perinuclear cytoplasm, and short processes. In contrast, the features of SOM/NPY-ir neurons were not consistent during postnatal life. By day P7, these neurons showed immature features ; they began to show more advanced neuronal characteristics by week P2, when they had a larger and more intensely-stained cytoplasm. In addition, their processes were longer, thicker and more complex than at earlier ages. At this age, SOM/NPY-ir somata were close to their maximum size. From week P4, they became smaller and were lightly labeled. SOM/NPY-ir somata were larger than SOM only- and NPY only-ir somata at and after two weeks of age. The present results showing different postnatal maturation patterns such as time of appearance and morphological features suggest that double-labeled SOM/NPY and single-labeled neurons might be different populations regulated by different mechanisms in their development, and with different functional properties during development.
