1.Lipoabdominoplasty using Intravenous Sedation.

Careful attentions to design, liposuction, adequate positioning of the incision, musculofascial plication, umbilicoplasty and meticulous closure are very critical for optimal outcomes of abdominoplasty. In addition to the above factors, the mode of anesthesia is also an important factor. The ability to perform abdominal cosmetic surgery in the intravenous setting provides a more comfortable environment for patients, ease of scheduling for surgeons and less complications related to anesthesia. Between May 2007 and November 2008, 11 patients underwent lipoabdominoplasty under epidural anesthesia and 19 patients under local anesthesia with intravenous anesthesia. The results of these approaches were evaluated in terms of procedure time, length of hospital stay, rate of complications and level of patient satisfaction. There were no complications related to anesthesia (cardiac problem, deep vein thrombosis, fat emboli, and pulmonary embolism) and no surgery(flap loss or wound dehiscence) except 3 seroma cases. All intravenous anesthesia patients reported adequate postoperative pain and nausea control. Patients in both groups were generally pleased with the results of surgery. Advantages of lipoabdominoplasty using intravenous anesthesia included a low incidence of nausea and vomiting, and reduction or elimination in the risk of serious complications as a deep vein thrombosis.

2.Child Safety Injury Experiences, Prevention Behaviors and Educational Needs among Immigrant Vietnamese Women on Jeju Island

PURPOSE: Study purpose was to describe the child safety injury experiences, injury prevention behaviors and educational needs of immigrant Vietnamese women on Jeju Island, and to explore associations among those factors.METHODS: A descriptive correlational study was conducted using structured questionnaires to collect data from immigrant Vietnamese women who visited a multicultural centers on Jeju Island from January to April, 2017.RESULTS: Data from 60 women were analyzed. They were 28.2±5.5 years old, had resided in Korea for 40.6±31.1 months, and had 1.5±0.6 children on average. In total, 51.7% had previous injury prevention education, 68.2% had experienced child safety injuries, and 95.0% wanted to receive education on how to prevent child safety injuries. The mean total score of child injury prevention behaviors was 27.33±17.79, and that variable was associated with a longer duration of formal education (t=2.41, p=.021) and with women's experiences of child safety injury (t=5.97, p<.001).CONCLUSION: Immigrant Vietnamese women experienced a higher frequency of child safety injuries and needed educational opportunities to prevent these injuries. Further research is necessary to develop the essential content and effective methods for education on child safety injury prevention among this unique multicultural population.

3.Elevation of heart-femoral pulse wave velocity by short-term low sodium diet followed by high sodium diet in hypertensive patients with sodium sensitivity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We compared changes in heart-femoral pulse wave velocity (hfPWV) in response to low sodium and high sodium diet between individuals with sodium sensitivity (SS) and resistance (SR) to evaluate the influence of sodium intake on arterial stiffness. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Thirty-one hypertensive and 70 normotensive individuals were given 7 days of low sodium dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) diet (LSD, 100 mmol NaCl/day) followed by 7 days of high sodium DASH diet (HSD, 300 mmol NaCl/day) during 2 weeks of hospitalization. The hfPWV was measured and compared after the LSD and HSD. RESULTS: The hfPWV was significantly elevated from LSD to HSD in individuals with SS (P = 0.001) independently of changes in mean arterial pressure (P = 0.037). Conversely, there was no significant elevation of hfPWV from LSD to HSD in individuals with SR. The percent change in hfPWV from the LSD to the HSD in individuals with SS was higher than that in individuals with SR. Subgroup analysis revealed that individuals with both SS and hypertension showed significant elevation of hfPWV from LSD to HSD upon adjusted analysis using changes of the means arterial pressure (P = 0.040). However, there was no significant elevation of hfPWV in individuals with SS and normotension. CONCLUSION: High sodium intake elevated hfPWV in hypertensive individuals with SS, suggesting that high sodium intake increases aortic stiffness, and may contribute to enhanced cardiovascular risk in hypertensive individuals with SS.

5.Extensive characterization of feline intra-abdominal adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from various tissues have been well characterized for therapeutic application to clinical diseases. However, in contrast to MSCs from other animal species, the characteristics of feline MSCs have not been fully documented. In this study, we conducted extensive characterization of feline adipose tissue-derived MSCs (fAD-MSCs). Study fAD-MSCs were individually isolated from the intra-abdominal adipose tissues of six felines. The expression levels of cell surface markers and pluripotent markers were evaluated. Next, proliferation capacity was analyzed by performing cumulative population doubling level (CPDL) and doubling time (DT) calculation assays. Differentiation potentials of fAD-MSCs into mesodermal cell lineages were analyzed by examining specific staining and molecular markers. All fAD-MSCs positively expressed cell surface markers such as CD29, CD44, CD90, CD105, CD166, and MHC-I, while CD14, CD34, CD45, and CD73 were negatively expressed. The CPDL of the fAD-MSCs was maintained until passage 5 to 6 (P5 to P6), whereas DT increased after P3 to P4. Also, stem cell-specific pluripotent markers (Oct3/4, Nanog, and SSEA-4) were detected. Importantly, all fAD-MSCs demonstrated mesodermal differentiation capacity. These results suggest that fully characterized fAD-MSCs could be beneficial when considering the use of these cells in feline disease research.

6.Pharmacokinetic Modeling of Phagocytic Activity of the Liver Using Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Dynamic MR Imaging.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether phagocytic activity is measurable by dynamic superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced MR imaging. For these experiments on New Zealand White rabbits, which were randomly allocated to normal and silica treated groups, we performed a dynamic MR study and radioisotope study with Tc99m-phytate. In this dynamic MR study, the ratio (Rv) of the distribution volumes of iron oxide (Vm/Ve) could be obtained by applying three- compartment model to the data obtained from the kidney and liver simultaneously. Changes in Rv caused by silica injection and by dosing superparamagnetic iron oxide, AMI-25, were evaluated. In the dynamic MR study using a Beagle dog model the input function could be calculated from data obtained from the hepatic artery and portal vein. Rv's reached maximum values at around 80 minutes after the AMI-25 injection. The Rv of the normal group was 5.06 +/- 1.53 whereas the Rv of the silica treated group was 2.13 +/- 1.20. The results were similar to tissue count data obtained by radioisope study. The Rv value was not dependent on the injected dose of AMI-25. The rate of transport constants (k1, k2, k3) could not be estimated using the 3 compartment model regardless of obtaining the input function. We conclude that Rv may be an quantitative index of decreased phagocytic activity in the liver as determined by dynamic superparamagnetic iron oxide- enhanced MRI.

7.Effect of donor age on the proliferation and multipotency of canine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Research into adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) has demonstrated the feasibility of their use in clinical applications due to their ease of isolation and abundance in adipose tissue. We isolated AD-MSCs from young and old dogs, and the cells were subjected to sequential sub-passaging from passage 1 (P1) to P7. Canine AD-MSCs (cAD-MSCs) were examined for proliferation kinetics, expression of molecules associated with self-renewal, expression of cell surface markers, and differentiation potentials at P3. Cumulative population doubling level was significantly higher in cAD-MSCs of young donors than in those of old donors. In addition, expressions of CD73, CD80, Oct3/4, Nanog, cell survival genes and differentiation potentials were significantly higher in young donors than in old donors. The present study suggests that donor age should be considered when developing cell-based therapies for clinical application of cAD-MSCs.

8.Advanced Criteria for Clinicopathological Diagnosis of Food Protein-induced Proctocolitis.

The clinicopathological findings in previous studies concerning food protein-induced proctocolitis (FPIPC) are quite diverse in terms of results and conclusions. The aim of this study was to suggest advanced clinicopathological diagnostic criteria that facilitate the early confirmation of FPIPC. Data of 38 FPIPC patients, who had received sigmoidoscopy and biopsy, was analyzed. Microscopic findings were compared with observations of previous studies. Feeding at onset of bleeding was exclusively breast-fed (94.7%) and formula-fed or mixed-fed (5.3%). Endoscopic abnormalities were observed in all patients; nodular hyperplasias with circumscribed and/or central pit-like erosions in 94.7% and erythema in 5.3%. Histopathological findings were; lymphoid aggregates in 94.7%, eosinophils in lamina propria of > or =60 cells/10 HPF in 97.4% and of >20 cells/HPF in 63.2%, epithelial or muscularis mucosa eosinophil infiltration in 97.4%, and crypt abscess in 2.6%. The majority of FPIPC patients are exclusively breast-fed and nodular hyperplasias with erosions may be a disease specific endoscopic finding. Histologic diagnosis of FPIPC is compatible with eosinophils in the lamina propria of > or =60 cells/10 high power fields; however, >20 cells/HPF is not an appropriate diagnostic criterion.

9.Analysis on Quasispecies of HIV-1 env Gene by Single Clone per PCR.

The human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) exhibit tremendous genetic variability in their hosts. It is mainly due to two factors: the error-prone nature of the viral reverse transcriptase enzyme and the effects of environmental constraints such as antiviral therapy, cellular tropism, or HIV-specific immune responses. These quasispecies show fluctuation both in the overall divergence and diversity between individual sequences with different duration after primary infection. For better understand the viral quasispecies, we have performed the longitudinal genetic analysis of HIV-1 env gene V1-C5 region (1.2 kb) by two molecular cloning methods. Diversity indicated that 'single clone per PCR' value was higher than that of 'multiple clones per PCR' in subjects: 0.58-3.15 in subject 1 (P<0.05) and 0.28-2.25 in subject 2 (P<0.05). But divergence was similar in both molecular cloning methods. Phylogenetic analysis of longitudinal sequences at different sampling stages revealed the existence of different topologies individually. These data suggested that 'single clone per PCR' is more efficient than 'multiple clones per PCR' in genetic diversity analysis.

10.Relationship between Horse Racing Addiction and Health Status Indicators

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate relationship between the horse racing addiction and the health status indicators. METHODS: Surveys were conducted with visitors of the Korea Racing Association in Gyeonggi-do, from September 1 to September 24, 2017. We used the questionnaire, which contains questions to assess the horse racing addiction, mood depression, health-related quality of life, smoking amount, alcohol dependency, etc. Survey data were analyzed through t-test, chi-square test, logistic regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis by SPSS program (IBM Corp., Chicago, IL, USA). RESULTS: The pathological gambling group was 47.5% (n=38) of the visitors, and they showed a different racecourse use behavior compared to the normal group. In addition, we found that the pathological gambling group had a significantly different health-related quality of life score and a depression score from the normal group, and that the addiction score and the depression score had a linear correlation. CONCLUSIONS: Among the racecourse visitors, the ratio of the pathological gambler was considerably high, and the pathological gambling group showed different health-related quality of life score and a depression score compared to the normal group; especially, the depression score has a significant correlation with horse racing addiction. Therefore, the horse racing association and the health authorities should recognize the seriousness of the horse racing addiction, make an effort to select high risk users, and prepare a program to prevent pathological gambling.
