We evaluated 1,000 consecutive endometrial curettage samples obtained over a 30 month period. The clinico-pathologic correlation was analysed according to Hendrickson's five criteria based on the practical view. The causes of uterine bleeding in decreasing order of occurrence were as follows: 1) hormonal imbalance lesions (49.2%) encompassing glandular and stromal breakdown suggesting anovulatory bleeding, proliferative phase endometrium, and disordered proliferative endometrium, 2) pregnancy associated lesions (24.2%), 3) organic lesions (13.5%), 4) endometrial hyperplasia (6.9%), and 5) inadequate specimen (6.2%). According to age, pregnancy related lesions were most frequent in the third decade. In the fourth, fifth, and sixth decades, hormonal imbalance lesions were the most common cause. In approximately 30% of the samples, there were two or three morphologic patterns such as anovulatory bleeding with an endometrial polyp, postabortal bleeding with inflammation, and glandular-stromal dissociation with a polyp, which suggested there was a variable histologic morphology in the same disease spectrum. Using immunohistochemical techniques we studied the hormonal dependency of bcl-2 oncoprotein in anovulatory bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, and proliferative endometrium. 70% of anovulatory bleeding specimens showed weak positivity in the epithelial cytoplasm, and all cases of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma showed a strong positivity. These results suggest that there is a estrogenic hormonal dependency of apoptosis in the endometrium.

Transmitral left ventricular diastolic inflow velocities determined by pulsed Doppler in 47 normotensives, 80 hypertensives and 44 age-matched hypertensives were measured to evaluate the effects of age and left ventricular hypertrophy on left ventricular diastolic fuction in normotensives and hypertensives. The results were as follows: 1) The peak E velocity in normotensives(77.82+/-13.53cm/sec) was significantly different from those of hyeprtensives(58.13+/-11.80cm, p<0.01) and age-matched hypertensives(59.31+/-10.94cm/sec, p<0.01). The peak E/A in normotensives(1.31+/-0.45) was significantly different from those of hypertensives(0.83+/-0.21,p<0.01) and age-matched hypertensives(0.83+/-0.20, p<0.01). 2)In normotensives, simple linear regression analysis revealed strong inverse correlations of peak E with age(r=-0.758, p<0.01), peak E/A with age(r=-0.748, p<0.01), but no significant correlation of peak E and peak E/A with LVMI(p>0.05). The hand is an organ of both motion and sensibility. Motion is necessary for the highly adaptive functions of pinch, grasp, and hook. When a major muscle is paralyzed, the balance of the hand is disrupted. The objective of reconstructive procedure is to achieve a limited but balanced functional performance by means of redistributing assets rather than creating new motor and sensory units. Among the variable methods of treatment, the tendon transfer is a useful method in restoring the lost functions of the paralyzed hand. Authors reviewed 3 cases of paralyzed hands: the first one had an impairment of the opposition and flexion of the thumb caused by brachial plexus injury; the second one had an adducted thumb and a flexion contracture of the index and middle fingers due to a severe compression injury to forearm; the third one was a quadriplegics due to the C5-6 fracture-dislocation, but fortunately had a function of active flexion in ring and little fingers. They were treated by Omer's technique plus other reconstructive procedures for the paralysis at the Department of Orthopaedics, Catholic Medical Center from 1978 to 1981. By this procedure gratifying results such as restoration of pinching and grasping function were obtained.

Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome is a rare disorder chracterized by congenital icthyosis, spastic diplegia or tetraplegia and mental retardation. The inheritance is autosomal recessive, due to deficiency of alcohol dehydrogenase activity of fatty acid matabolism. We have experienced a case of Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome in a 16 month-old male children who have dried thick skin, developmental delay, and spastic diplegia. He also has glistening spot on macula area with irregular high voltage slow wave (2-3Hz) on electroencephalography. From Biopsy finding, Lamella ictyosis with acanthosis and hyperkeratosis in epithelium is shown. He was much improved clinically for skin lesion and developmental status with etretinate supplement. We report the case with brief review of related literatures.
