Degenerative arthritis of the knee joint is one of the main causes of disability in middle-aged persons. This paper is planned by the necessity of objective information upon changes of tibio-femoral angle according to weight bearing in patients with degenerative arthritis of the knee joint. The authors studied the tibio-femoral angle in 29 cases of degenerative arthritis of the knee ranging fmm 5th to 6th decades of age, and compared with 27 cases of the control group, in the Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery, S.N.U.H. fmm Mar. 1983 to May 1984. The following observations were obtained: 1. In patients with degenerative arthritis of the knee, changes of the tibio-femoral angle according to weight bearing were +2.2±1.94 in 5th decade, +2.3±2.02 in 6th decade. 2. Compared to control group, the degenerative arthritis group showed a significant varization with weight bearing. 3. It was seemed that the weight bearing radiography is essential in diagnosis and treatment of degenerative arthritis of the knee joint.

The menisci or semilunar cartilages of the knee provide the function of mechanical lubrication and they are particularly important in allowing rotational movements of the knee joint. The study was carried out on 123 Korean adult knees for measurement of the menisci and observation of surrounding ligamentous structures through anatomical dissection of formalin embalmed cadavers. Detection of abnormal meniscal lesions was also included in this study. The following results were obtained: 1. A-P diameter, transverse diameter, maximal width and thickness were measured in 123 knees of 62 cadavers. 2. Among 62 cadavers,' the anterior menisco-femoral ligament was present in 11 subjects (17.7%), the posterior menisco-femoral ligament in 59 (95.2%), and the transverse ligament in 36 (58.0%). 3. Discoid lateral meniscus was found in 5 knees (4.1%), and tear was associated in 3 of them. 4. Meniscus tear was found in 13 knees (10.6%), and the site of tear was medial in 9 knees and lateral in 4 including 3 torn discoid menisci. The oblique pattern of tear was most common.

9.The Use of Atypical Antipsychotics in Bipolar Disorder.

Korean Journal of Psychopharmacology 2001;12(1):15-22
Atypical antipsychotics are the more effective and safer alternative to the common practice of maintenance adjunctive treatment as well as acute adjuvant treatment with traditional antipsychotics in patients with bipolar disorder. A few double-blind controlled studies of acute mania found olanzapine or ziprasidone monotherapy to be more effective than placebo, and the combination treatment of risperidone and mood stabilizer was also more effective than placebo. Furthermore, clozapine has antimanic and mood stabilizing effect for the treatment-refractory patients in acute manic and maintenance phase. Olanzapine and risperidone are reported that they have long-term mood stabilizing effect when they are used with mood stabilizers. At present, combination treatment of atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizer is generally used. However, because each drug of such combinations causes sometimes bothersome and potentially dangerous events as well as their interactions, the consideration for their risk are needed.
