In order to investigate the level of lead exposure of workers in litharge making industry and to evaluate how lead exposure, personal habit such as smoking and drinking affect the prevalence of lead related symptoms and other study variables, we investigate 114 workers(24 office workers and 90 lead exposed workers) in a litharge making industry. Study variables chosen were blood lead(PbB), zinc protoporphyrin in whole blood(ZPP), Hemoglobin(Hb), hematocrit (Hct), SGOT and SGPT. symptom questionnaires which had 15 lead exposure related symptoms were provided to all workers and filled up by themselves and reconfirmed by physician. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The mean value of PbB, ZPP and SGOT in lead exposed group were higher than those of non-exposed group, and there were no differences of means in other study variables. 2. The smoking and drinking rate of study subjects were 65.8% and 71.0% as a whole. Smoking rates were lower in non-exposed group than exposed group, but drinking rate were not. 3. There were no differences of mean values of study variables between smoker and non-smoker in non-exposed and exposed group, but there was a difference of mean value of SGOT between drinker and non-drinker in lead exposed group. 4. while the symptom prevalence of lead exposed group were higher in neuromuscular category than non-exposed group, those of non-exposed group were higher or same with exposed group in gastrointestinal and general symptom category. 5. The symptom prevalence of smoker were higher than non-smoker regardless of exposure. 6. The symptom prevalence of drinker were only higher in gastrointestinal symptom category than non-drinker. 7. In multiple stepwise regression analysis of lead related symptoms as dependent variable and blood lead, smoking habit, drinking habit and work duration as independent variables, drinking habit contributed to the gastrointestinal symptom category, whereas blood lead and smoking contributed to the neuromuscular symptom category. For the total symptoms work duration and smoking habit contributed significantly.

The hemostatic effect of endoscopic microwave coagulation method for upper gastrointestinal bleeding was evaluated clinically. Hemostasis over 72 hours was achieved in 18 of 20 cases (90%) with upper gastrointestinal bleeding by the endoscopic microwave coagulation method. It is noteworthy that this method was effective in all 4 cases of pulsatile bleeding from exposed vessels. We conclude that this method is useful for emergency endoscopic hemostasis on upper gastrointestinal bleeding, especially bleeding from exposed vessels.

Normally the cornea has a water content varying between 76-78%, a state of relative dehydration maintained through its own metabolism by the active transport of water and ions across its limiting membrane, the epithelium and endothelium. If the metabolism is grossly disturbed or if the effectivity of the limiting membrane is impaired, the living cornea will swell by the absorption of the fluid. Corneal edema are developed due to trauma, inflammation, glaucoma, degeneration, and neuropathic and metabolic conditions. Essential corneal edema are encountered for which no cause can be found, the condition apparantly occuring without other ocular pathology. A 29 years old Korean lady has been found to have bilateral essential edema of the cornea.

Referred pain is not localized to the site of its cause, but referred to an area that may be an adjacent distant from such a site. With respect to this, there is the possibility of misdiagnosis in the treatment of referred pain patient. We experienced a case of a 31-years-old male patient complaining of right shoulder pain, which subsided after a bursa injection. The patient revisited our clinic after 3 weeks complaining not only of right shoulder pain, but also of right upper quadrant pain and fever. He was diagnosed as having a liver abscess by an imaging study.

Chordoid glioma, a recently introduced clinicopathologic entity, is a rare neoplasm occurring mainly in the third ventricle and hypothalamus. The authors had experienced a case of chordoid glioma combined with Rathke's cleft cyst which occurred in the sellar and suparasellar region. Here we report clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of this neoplasm with review of literature

Inflammatory fibroid polyp is a relatively rare, benign polyp which is composed of fibraus connective tissue, blood vessels, and infiltration of eosinophils. The majority of inflammatory fibroid polyps has been reported with pathologic specimen in stomach and small intestine. We performed the gastrofiberscopy and endoscopic ultrasonogram of an inflammatory fibroid polyp, which reveals central ulcerated polypoid mass originated in the submucosa of antral portion of the stomach. So we report a case of endoscopic and endoscopic ultrasonographic findings of inflammatory fibroid piolyp in stomach. The etiolagy and pathology are discussed with the review of the literatures.

Xanthoma is characterized by collections in the lamina propria of lipid-laden macrophages or foam cells containing cholesterol land neutral fat, forming plagues or nodules in all regions of the gastrointestinal tract. But it is most common in the stomach. Once thought to be a rare entity, gastric xantoma has been reported with increasing frequency with the advent of increasing utilization of gastrofiberscopy. Because gastric xanthoma appear to be more common in patients with gasritis, gastric ulcer, and with duodenogastric reflux after gastric surgery, mucosal damage has been presumed to play a major role in their pathogenesis. Altough cholesterol and neutral fat are the major constituents of the foam cells, there is no documented relationship between degree of hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolmia and presence of gastric xanthoma. Gastric xanthoma may be found in any portion of the stomach, and is single or multiple, usually 1 or 2 mm in diameter, rounded or oval, circumscribed, yellow or yeallow-white, and macular or nodular. We report a case of gastric xanthomatosis diagnosed by gastrofibroscopy with forceps biopsy. There are numerous, flat or slightly raised, white or yellow white lesions that range from pinpoint size to several milimeters in diameter and that are scattered through whole gastric mucosa.

PURPOSE: The treatment results for a proximal femur fracture caused by a benign bone lesion were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients (23 cases) who had been treated for proximal femur pathologic fracture from 1987 to 2002 were enrolled in this study. The mean follow-up duration was 40 months. The causes and treatments of the pathologic fractures and complications such as nonunion, deformity and recurrence were evaluated. RESULTS: The benign bone lesions treated were fibrous dysplasia (15), simple bone cyst (3), aneurysmal bone cyst (2), giant cell tumor (2) and eosinophilic granuloma (1). An autograft (3), allograft (2), and both autograft and allograft (3) was performed after adjuvant curettage with a high-speed burr. There was no recurrence in these 8 cases. At the final course, internal fixation was performed in 18 cases (intramedullary nail (10), compressive hip screw (6), plate (1), screw (1)), a hip spica cast 3 cases and a THR 2 cases. Three cases where a hip spica cast had been performed showed a varus deformity. A refracture and deformity were prevented in 10 cases who underwent intramedullary nailing. CONCLUSION: The IM nail is very effective in preventing complications such as a deformity, refracture after a treatment for polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. However, in a solitary benign bone lesion, bone graft and internal fixation is effective after thorough curettage.
