Anti-aging medicine has become a popular topic, in the lay press, the (semi-) scientific literature and the Internet. In almost all instances, claims of drugs, health supplements and other types of intervention are not based on any evidence supported by sound scientific knowledge. Specifically, the aging process itself, in contrast to age-related diseases, has so far neither been fully understood, nor significantly influenced in higher species, notably humans. In addition to the ill-defined effects, claims of anti-aging medicine also pose a considerable economic burden on the usually poorly informed older segment of the population. In the following report, we describe the case of a rapidly skeletonized corpse discovered in late summer. On the first day of September, a 57-year-old man was found almost completely skeletonized on a hill behind his house. His body lay prone, accompanied by a brush cutter at the entrance to the graveyard where his friend's parents were buried. His cap, clothes, and rubber boots were all intact and undamaged. Upon autopsy, no definite abnormalities were identified except for an old linear fracture on the frontoparietal bone. According to his friends and neighbors, he had likely died 8 or 9 days prior to the discovery of his body.

Primary leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor of the ovary. We experienced a case of primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma in a 68 year old woman. Microscopically, the tumor was characterized by interlacing bundles of plump spindle cells that showed immunoreactivity for alpha-smooth muscle actin, pleomorphic multinucleated giant cells and an increased mitotic rate. Ultrastructural features included abundant smooth muscle type filaments and irregular bodies. Consequently, this case has led us to propose ultrastructural and immunohistochemical criteria for primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma.

For the purpose of investigating mesiodistal axial inclination of posterior teeth in normal occlusion group, open bite and deep bite group and investigating the correlationship between the axial inclination of posterior teeth and overbite of anterior teeth, a cephalometric study was performed on the subjects consisted of normal occlusion group(40), open bite group(71 : Angle's Class I 21, Class II, division 1 25, Class III 25) and deep bite group(64 : Angle's Class I 23, Class II, division 1 21, Class III 20). Mesiodistal axial inclination of posterior teeth to occlusal, mandibular and palatal plane were measured. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Upper and lower posterior teeth were more mesially inclined to occlusal plane in open bite group than in deep bite group. 2. Lower posterior teeth were more mesially inclined in deep bite group than in open bite group in Angle's Class II, division 1 malocclusion but there were no significant differences in Angle's Class I and Class III malocclusion. 3. There was no significant correlationship between the axial inclination of posterior teeth to each plane and overbite of anterior teeth in open bite group. 4. There was a significant correlationship between the axial inclination of upper and lower second premolar to occlusal plane and overbite of anterior teeth in Angle's Class I, Class II, division 1 and Class III malocclusion.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Management of ovarian carcinoma presents most commonly by surgery and subsequent platinum-based chemotherapy, but most patients will have either residual or recurrent disease. Taxol, a new antimicrotubule agent, has been indicated as a salvage measure after failure of first-line or subsequent chemotherapy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy and toxicity of Taxol used as a salvage therapy. MATERIALS & METHODS: Between January 1994 and Jun 1996, 19 patients aged 38-64 years(median 52) with ovarian carcinoma were given Taxol-containing regimen. Taxol was administered at a dose of 135mg/m2 intravenously with cisplatin or carboplatin every 3 weeks. The patients who treated with Taxol only were received 175mg/m2 intravenously with same interval. The median treatment cycle was 6.6 cycles(range, 3 to 15 cycles). Patient's response were evaluated with tumor marker(CA-125) and CT or MRI before and after chemotherapy. Responses and toxicities were defined according to the Gynecologic Oncology Group criteria. Backgrouad & Aims: Cyclophosphamide, adriamycin and cisplatin(CAP) combination chemo- therapy improved the response rate in the treatment of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer, and it has been the gold standard. However, adriamycin is a rather toxic drug, and there is still confusion concerning the choice of adriamycin to be included in optimal regimen. The present study was designed to compare the activity and toxicity of combination regimens in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer between CAP and CTP which substitutes adriamycin with pirarubicin(THP- adriamycin). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From March 1995 to December 1997, 47 patients with FIGO stage III-IV epithelial ovarian cancer who were diagnosed after initial cytoreductive surgery were divided into two groups at random: (1) The case group were treated with CTP(500/40/50 mg/m2) as a first line chemotherapy. (2) The control group were treated with CAP(500/50/50 mg/m2) as that of case group. Clinical characteristics, response rates and toxicities according to Gynecologic Oncology Group criteria were compared between those treated with CAP and CTP respectively. RESULTS: Forty one patients out of 47 were evaluable and the number of patients in case and control group was 22 and 19 respectively. There was no significant differences in patient characteristics such as age, stage, histologic type between two groups. Clinical complete response rate was 50.0%(11/22) in patients treated with CTP regimen and 47.4%(9/19) with CAP regimen and there was no significant difference between two groups. Second look operation was undergone in 10 patients of CTP group and 7 patients of CAP group who showed clinical complete response and the pathologic complete response rate was 27.3%(6/22) with CTP and 21.1%(4/19) with CAP. The incidence of leukocytopenia of grade 3 or 4 was more frequently occurred in CAP group(52.6%, 10/19) than CTP group(22.7%, 5/22). There was no significant difference in the incidence of other toxicitied such as hepatic, renal and G-I toxicities. Suspicious cardiac toxicity according to the finding of EKG was seen in 15.8%(3/19) only with CAP regimen and all of them showed decreased cardiac function in gated blood pool scan. There were no significant differences in risponse rates between two groups, but the incidence of cardiac toxicity and leukocytopenia o f grade 3 or 4 was more frequently occurred in CAP group than CTP group. CONCLUSION : CTP regimen has comparable response rates to CAP regimen, with lower incidence of hematolohic and cardiac toxicity.

BACKGROUND: The aim of study was to confirm the clinical effectiveness and results of wide and single anterior approach for fractures occurring along length of humerus. METHODS: A total of 23 patients with humeral fracture were enrolled into our study who were able to participate in at least one year of follow-up. Seven patients had segmental comminuted humeral fractures and 16 patients had distal humeral fractures. We made various tractions of the muscles to expose the proximal and the middle third humerus between the biceps and brachialis and the distal humerus by partial splitting of lateral side of biceps through a single incision. Postoperatively, we measured the Mayo elbow performance index (MEPI). RESULTS: we achieved bone union in all 23 patients. Solid union of the bone was achieved at an average 13.9 weeks. Postoperatively, two complications were observed screw loosening and nonunion. Revision surgery was performed in both patients. The patient with bone nonunion was treated using bone grafts. No postoperative infections or peripheral neuropathies were observed. At the final follow-up (average 20 months), we found that the average MEPI functional score of the patients was 91.7 points regardless of the fracture site. CONCLUSIONS: Our whole humerus with a single incision was effective for the treatment of segmental comminuted and distal fractures. we believe it is a useful alternative to preexisting methods of fracture fixation.

Even though malignant potential of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia(VaIN) may be low, the prevalence is increasing and the mean age at diagnosis is decreasing. Various treatment options have been used for the eradication of ValN, but most effective standard protocol is not present because it is a rare disease. Laser vaporization was used to treat 7 patients with VaIN diagnosed at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Seoul National University Hospital between 1992 to 1996. The patients were from 40 to 70 years of age with a mean 57 of years. All patients had a history of radical or simple hysterectomy, and final pathologic diagnosis were as follows : cervical cancer(n=5), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(n=l), leiomyoma(n=l). Vaginal intrae-pithelial neoplasia(VaIN) was identified between 4 months and 8 years after first operation. All lesions were unifocal disease and found at the upper one third of the vagina. Treatment was performed with a CO2 laser unit and colposcope. Four(57%) out of seven patients had general anesthesia for the purpose of treatment. Patients were followed up for an average of 16.8 months with regular cytologic evaluation, colposcopy and biopsy. Failure of therapy was defined as evidence of intraepithelial neoplasia in any one of these three parameters. Only one patients showed persistent disease and the others remain free of disease.
