Objective: To conduct a comparative analysis of the phenolic and flavonoid contents and anti-oxidative potential of epicarp and mesocarp of Lagenaria siceraria fruit. Methods: The dried methanolic extracts of mesocarp and epicarp of the fruit and their hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanolic and aqueous fractions were subjected to antioxidant assays including ferric reducing antioxidant potential, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid, reducing power capacity, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, lipid peroxidation inhibitory and phosphomolybdate assays. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined. Results: Ethyl acetate fractions of epicarp and mesocarp had considerable amounts of phenolics (243.50 and 109.50 μg/mL of gallic acid equivalents, respectively). 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of ethyl acetate fractions of both the plant parts showed higher activity than vitamin C with IC

Introduction: The Gallbladder stone (GBS) disease is most commonly asymptomatic that may lead to several
complications such as ascending cholangitis and obstructive jaundice. In this study the frequency of gallbladder stones among patients referred for abdominal ultrasound at the University of Science and Technology
hospital (USTH), Sana’a – Yemen, have been estimated during the period between January and June 2013.
Methods: This study is a record-based and conducted at the radiology department in USTH, on cases
underwent abdominal ultrasound during the period from January – June 2013. Information were collected
from abdominal ultrasonography reports. Results: In this study 4935 patients’ records are included. Of them,
2541 were males and 2394 were females. The frequency of patients with GBS was 5.53%. Multiple stones
were observed in 3.57% of patients and 4.34% patients had large stones with size ≥ 5 mm. Females had
significantly higher frequency of GBS (8.0%: 191/2394) than males (3.2%: 82/2541) (P < 0.001). It was found
that, no significant difference between males and females in harboring small stones (< 5mm) (P = 0.251).
However, significantly higher frequency of large GBS (≥ 5 mm) was found among females compared to
males (P < 0.001). The frequencies of GBS, small size of GBS and large size of GBS have significantly increased
with increasing age (P < 0.001). Conclusion: In this study it was found that females had significantly higher
frequency of GBS than males. No significant difference between males and females in harboring small stones.
There was a significantly higher frequency of large GBS was found among females compared to males. The
frequencies of GBS, small size of GBS and large size of GBS have significantly increased with increasing age.

A multi-centred study was designed to collect dengue epidemiologic data from government and registered private hospitals/clinics and maintained archive of frozen specimens in bio-bank to be used for future dengue epidemic control program, and assess the epidemiology of dengue fever (DF) by evaluating biochemical and oxidative status of patients. ELISA IgM antibodies test was done to confirm DF. From August 2010 to December 2011, 101 confirmed blood samples of DF patients referred to pathology lab of Jinnah Hospital Lahore were subjected to the epidemiologic assessment by evaluating the biochemical and physiological indices and alterations of circulating antioxidants. Clinical features of DF patients and effect of fever on blood components and serum proteins of liver were recorded. The hospital stay in DF, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) showed significant difference. Significant increases in serum alanine amino transferase (ALT) (P=0.000), aspartate amino transferase (AST) (P=0.000), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (P=0.000), malondialdehyde (MDA) along with significant decreases in total protein (TP) (P=0.000), reduced glutathione (GSH) (P=0.000), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) (P=0.000), and sialic acid contents (P=0.016) were observed. A positive correlation existed between bound sialic acid levels, liver enzymes and circulating antioxidants (r=0.656, P=0.016). In the present study, alterations of circulating antioxidants in DF suggest that DF might be a metabolic response to an acute, self-limiting tropical viral infection, and a consequence of the viral inflammatory process.
