1.The Relationship between Quality of Life and Comorbid Depression or Anxiety in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) show symptoms of depression and anxiety more often than patients with other chronic illnesses or the general population. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of depression and anxiety on quality of life in patients with COPD. METHODS: Quality of life was assessed using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire and depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorder Patient Health Questionnaire (PRIME-MD PHQ) in 129 patients with COPD visiting an outpatient clinic. We examined the correlations between the SF-36 scores and clinico-demographic features by Pearson's correlation analysis and the influence of depression and anxiety symptoms on the SF-36 scores by multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: Of the 129 patients, 48.8% were diagnosed as having major depressive syndrome, 18.6% other depressive syndromes, 23.3% panic syndrome, and 30.3% other anxiety syndrome by the PRIME-MD PHQ. The physical component summary was affected the most by depressive symptoms followed by dyspnea (P<0.05). The mental component summary was only affected by depressive symptoms (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in COPD patients is markedly increased, and depressive symptoms decrease the quality of life in these patients. Thus, there is a need for physicians to assess for and recognize such symptoms and promptly administer appropriate interventions.

2.A Clinical Study on Straight Back Syndrome.

Six cases with Straight back syndrome were reported and studied by physiological, radiological electrocardiographic, phonocardiographic and echocardiographic evidences. They were classified according to A-P diameter and arch distance as Type I, II, III. by Kim's Consideration. 1. It was noticed that "pancake" configuration of heart with or without LVH in chest PA view with subsequent compression of the heart against the sternum and straight thoracic vertebra in lateral view was revealed. 2. Anterior-posterior diameter, and A-P/T ratio of six patients were below the average value. 3. Grade 2-3/6 ejection type systolic murmurs on pulmonary artery area and lateral sternal border or apex were auscultated, but systolic murmur on apex was considered to be insignificant due to normal mitral valve motion by Echocardiogram. 4. On ECG, there was observed one case with atrial fibrillation and the other with sinus bradycardia who had prominant straight thoracic vertebra. 5. There was observed normal mitrla valve motion on Echocardiogram in all six cases.

3.Distribution of Synovial Cells in Rabbit Knee Joint

An ultrastructral study was carried out to investigate distributional character of various synovial cells in different aress of synovial membrane of rabbit knee joints. Synovial membranes were surgically obtained from both knee joints of 5 rabbits, and were observed by both light and electron micrescopies. Type A synovial cells were distributed msinly on the luminal surface of the synovial membrane but type B cells were mostly in deep stromal areas. B cells were more than A cells in over-all numbers. Cellular density was found different sccording to the areas observed. Generally mid-central areas of the synovial membrane were less cellular than peripheral areas (medisl, lateral, upper and lower aress). Differences of cellular populations and cellular densities in various areas of rabbit synovial membranes were considered to be closely related to underlying structures and function of individual cell types.

10.Studies on the bfp Gene, Adherence to HEp-2 Cells and Serotyping of Escherichia coli Isolated from Urine.

Eighty-two strains of Escherichia coli isolated from urine specimens in Pusan University Hospital, were serotyped and analyzed for plasmid DNA profiles, PFGE profiles, MRHA of human blood cells, HEp-2 cell adherence ability and reactivity to bfpA, LT, STh and STp DNA probes. The following results were obtained. Fifty-three of the eighty-two strains belonged to thirteen different 0 serotypes, twenty-nine strains could not be typed with the antisera used. Thirty strains (43.9%) were hemolysin producer. MRHA is present on twenty-nine strains (35.37%) of eighty-two strains. MRHA positive strains carry a plasmid of 60MDa, a putative factor involved in adherence. This plasmid might be specific for MRHA positive strains. MRHA positive strains were observed in serotype 01, 018, 055, 086a, 0119, 0126, and 0142. Twenty-six strains of E. coli showed three patterns of adherence to HEp-2 cells namely, localized, diffuse, and aggregative adhesion. Twenty-two strains hybridized with the bfpA probe, while all eighty-two strains did not hybridize with the probes, LT, STh, STp. The restriction fragment patterns of chromosomal DNA digested with AotI analysed by PFGE of hemolysin-producing E. coli ten strains were compared with eight different types. Three of E. coli serotype 01, 08 and 0126 showed the same chromosomal DNA fragment patterns.
