OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of Xianzhen tablet (XZT, a Chinese patent compound recipe) on advanced glycosylation end products (AGEs) and mRNA expression of AGE-specific cellular receptor (RAGE) in renal cortex of diabetic rats in order to explore the mechanism of XZT in protecting kidney.
METHODSThe diabetic rat model with persistent hyperglycemic renal damage was reproduced by streptozotocin. Fluorescent assay and RT-PCR were used to determine the content of AGEs and expression of RAGE mRNA in renal cortex in model rats, which were treated with XZT and controlled by aminoguanidine (AG) administration.
RESULTSThe relative content of AGEs and RAGE mRNA expression in renal cortex of model rats 12 weeks after modeling were significantly higher than those in the normal group (P < 0.05), while those in model rats treated by XZT or AG were markedly lower than those in non-treated model rats (P < 0.05), the effect of the both groups showed insignificant difference (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONXZT could reduce the accumulation of AGEs in renal cortex of diabetic rats, down-regulate the over-expression of RAGE mRNA, with the effects similar to that of AG, the inhibition of XZT on protein non-enzymatic glycosylation might be one of the mechanisms of its effect in protecting kidney.

Abstract: Objective To understand the general situation of death causes of permanent residents in Hainan Province from 2014 to 2020, analyze the causes of death, and provide scientific basis for the formulation of policies related to healthy Hainan. Methods The Hainan Provincial Population Death Information Registration and Management System was used to report data, and the death information of permanent residents in Hainan Province from 2014 to 2020 was obtained. Excel 2010 and SPSS 26.0 software were applied to perform statistical analysis related to the indicators including crude mortality rate, standardized mortality rate, ranking of causes of death, and composition ratio; the standardized mortality rate was calculated based on the data of the 2010 National Census Data. Results From 2014 to 2020, the average annual resident population of Hainan Province was 9 175 300, and average annual resident population at each of the eight monitoringp oints is 297 100, anaverage of 83 878 cumulative deaths were reported, the annual total mortality rate was 504.09/100 000, the standard mortality rate was 618.69/100 000. The standardized mortality rates of male and female were 806.18/100 000 and 444.36/100 000 respectively (P<0.01). The mortality rate of all age groups showed that the crude mortality rate of 0~<1 years old group showed a decreasing trend with the passage of time, and the crude mortality rate was significantly higher than that of other age groups. From the age of 20, with the increase of age, the overall crude mortality rate of residents keeps increasing. The crude death rate increases rapidly after the age of 65, and peaks especially after the age of 85. The leading causes of death were circulatory diseases, tumors and respiratory diseases. From 2014 to 2020, the mortality rate of circulatory diseases and tumors, the two main causes of death, was more than 100/100 000. Conclusion Chronic non-communicable diseases are still the first cause of death among permanent residents in Hainan Province. Targeted intervention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases is beneficial to reduce their mortality.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of Naofucong Granule (NFCG), a self-manufactured Chinese herbal preparation, on memory and cerebral cholinergic system in cerebral ischemic mice.
METHODSMice model of learning/memory impairment was established by bilateral ligation of internal carotid arteries. The memory ability of mice was assessed by measuring latent period in the Morris Water Maze.
RESULTSSeven days after modeling, the latent period and swimming course of mice (82.3 +/- 32.0 seconds and 986.7 +/- 414.5 cm) were longer than those of control (sham-operated mice, 35.3 +/- 37.9 seconds and 410.4 +/- 507.0 cm, P < 0.01). Administration of NFCG could ameliorate these changes to 30.6 +/- 31.3 seconds and 378.1 +/- 386.3 cm (P < 0.01) and normalized. In the model animals, the choline acetylase activity in brain cortex and hippocampus was 35.64 +/- 4.96 and 45.08 +/- 4.96 respectively, which was significantly lower than that in the control (40.52 +/- 4.74 and 53.96 +/- 8.53); so was the activity of cholinergic receptor M in cerebral cortex (44.41 +/- 10.67 vs 57.56 +/- 6.98) and the activity of cholinergic receptor N in cerebral cortex and hippocampus (232.41 +/- 21.99 and 303.72 +/- 72 +/- 28.78 vs 276.66 +/- 32.46 and 385.56 +/- 46.88), P < 0.05 or P < 0.01. Administration of NFCG also could reverse them and elevate to normal level.
CONCLUSIONNFCG has protective function on intellectual deficits in cerebral ischemic mice, which may be related to its action in enhancing function of cholinergic system.

OBJECTIVETo have a retrospective review of the patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) with clinical and radiological assessment, and observe changing of graft after procedure and assess correlation between graft collapse and recurrence of radiculopathy.
METHODSSixty-seven consecutive patients undergoing ALIF only at L(4 - 5) with autologous iliac crest graft for intervertebral disc prolapse were followed-up for an average of 14 (2.5 - 32) years. The effect of the fusion was examined by the existence of radiolucent lines and bony continuity on plain radiographs and tomographs, or mobility on flexion-extension radiographs. The disc height was also measured. Lower limb radiculopathy was assessed based on the symptom and examination. Paired samples t-test was used for statistical analysis.
RESULTSSixty-four patients with successful fusion were analyzed (fusion rate: 96%). All measurements in this study were completed by the same author, and the measurement error of more than 2 mm was statistically significant. According to this, graft collapse occurred in 55 patients (86%) and 9 patients (14%) had no graft collapse. In these 55 cases, the original disc height was (12.1 +/- 2.9) mm, increased immediately after the surgery to (16.2 +/- 1.9) mm, however re-narrowed to (12.9 +/- 2.7) mm at the first observation of solid fusion (a mean of 9 months, ranging from 5 to 14 months), which was not significant different compared to the original. There was no significant change in disc height after solid fusion and the disc space at the final follow-up was (12.6 +/- 2.3) mm. There was no radiculopathy observed in 52 cases (95%) during the follow-up.
CONCLUSIONDisc space re-narrowing was observed in most cases after single level ALIF of L(4 - 5), however it was rarely less than the initial and unlikely to result in recurrence of radiculopathy.

Objective:To investigate the correlation between serum ceruloplasmin level and elevated impulsivity in elderly patients with Parkinson′s disease (PD).Methods:227 elderly PD patients treated in Jinhua People′s Hospital from October 2019 to June 2021 were selected as the research objects. They were grouped according to the 75th percentile of serum ceruloplasmin. 0-75th percentile was defined as normal and >75th percentile was defined as high level. The differences of second-order and first-order factor scores of Barratt′s Impulsivity Scale Version 11 (BIS-11) between the two groups were observed. After balancing the general characteristics, the third part of Parkinson′s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), Hoehn&Yahr Scale, Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination Revised Edition (ACE-R), clinical treatment plan and other data, the correlation between ceruloplasmin and BIS-11 was observed. Results:According to the 75th percentile level of ceruloplasmin, 56 patients were included in the high-level group and 171 patients were included in the normal group. The level of ceruloplasmin, the ratio of female patients, MDS-UPDRS Ⅲ, Hoehn&Yahr Scale and ACE-R score in the high-level group were significantly higher than those in the normal group (all P<0.05). The second-order unplanned and corresponding first-order self-control and first-order self-knowledge complexity in the high-level group were higher than those in the normal group (all P<0.05). There was no significant difference in second-order attention, first-order attention, first-order cognitive instability, second-order motivation, first-order motivation, first-order stability and BIS-11 score between the two groups (all P>0.05). After removing the confounding factors by multifactor logistic analysis, ceruloplasmin was correlated with second-order unplanned and its corresponding first-order factors (self-control and self-knowledge complexity) (all P<0.05). Conclusions:The serum ceruloplasmin level in elderly PD patients is related to the elevated level of BIS-11 unplanned impulse.

Objective To study the pathologic changes of the palatopharyngeal muscles with transmission electronmiscroscopy (TEM) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), the role of the above muscle in OSAHS pathogenesis was discussed. Methods Thirty-eight palatopharyngeal muscle from OSAHS patients receiving uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) were collected in in-patient department of Chinese Medical University and five palatal tumor patients receiving resection without snoring were chosen as the control. The palatophryngeal muscle fiber and the feature of changes in mitochondrial morphology were observed by TEM. Results The pathological changes were not observed in the normal control group. The muscle fibers were regularly arranged, and the mitochondrial between muscles were normal. The palatopharyngeal myofibrillar in mild OSAHS group was regularly arranged. The Z lines were straight, and most mitochondria structure were normal. In the moderate group, the myofibrillar was disorganized, and the Z lines were shortened or distorted. The myofibrillar in severe group was disorganized, similar to point-like or flake, and the Z lines and the structures of sarcomeres were disppearered. And organelle were disintegrated and mitochondria were disappeared similar to flocculent. There existed obvious fatty infiltration in the palatopharyngeal muscle. In the control, mild, moderate and severe group, pharyngeal muscle fiber disarrangement of the occurrence rate was 0, 2/10, 8/13, 14/15, the occurrence rate of mitochondrial degeneration was 0, 2/10, 8/13, 14/15, increased with the severity of the ultrastructural changes in the trend of increasing incidence. Conclusions The degree of OSAHS is correlated with the pathological changes of palatopharyngeal muscles. Incidence of myopathy is an important part of OSAHS secondary to chronic intermittent hypoxia in OSAHS and other pathological lesions, but also an important reason for increasing pharyngeal collapse.
