1.Histologic Correlation of Ultrasonic Layers of Surgically Resected Gastric Wall.
Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1994;31(2):295-300
PURPOSE: To define the histologic correlation of the ultrsonic gastric wall layers of resected human gastric specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: UItrasound images of the gastric wall by using 5 or 7.5 MHz linear transducer were compared with the corresponding histologic sections of 30 surgically resected human gastric specimens. RESULTS: Five layers seen from within on ultrasound images of the normal gastric wall corresponded to (1) the acoustic interface between fluid bathing the surgical specimen and the mucosal surface and a portion of the superficial mucosa, (2) the deep mucosa including the muscularis mucosae and most of the superficial mucosa, (3) the submucosa plus the acoustic interface between the submucosa and the muscularis propria, (4) the muscularis propria minus the acoustic interface between the submucosa and the muscularis propria, and (5) the serosa and the subserosal tissue plus the acoustic interface between the serosa and the fluid bathing the surgical specimen. Ultrasonic findings in gastric carcinomas corresponded to their histopathologic findings. CONCLUSION: Histologic correlation of the ultrasonic gastric wall layers will provide us with a very useful and objective basis of gastric ultrasonography.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1986;21(4):669-678
The primary goal in the treatment of the nail bed avulsion injury is complete regrowing of the nail plate without any deformity. There are many procedures for treatment of the nail bed avulsion injury as a split-thickness skin graft, full-thickness nail bed graft, reverse dermal graft or split-thickness nail bed graft. From February, 1984 to June, 1985 at In-Chon Gill Hospital, 13 cases of nail bed avulsion injury were treated with split-thickness nail bed grafts. The intact residual part of the injured nail bed or the toe nail bed was served as a donor site. The results were as followings; 1. The incidence of nail bed avulsion injury of all hand injuries was 9.7%. 2. The main cause of injury was the industrial accident and more prevalent in the left hand. 3. The good result was obtained in the split-thickness nail bed graft for the nail bed avulsion injury, but in nail root portion, the poor result was noticed. 4. The average time for normal nail appearance is six months.

Korean Journal of Urology 1991;32(3):391-398
Ectopic ureteroceles have a broad spectrum of presentation, anatomy and pathophysiology and the management is controversial. Herein, we report our experience of the management in 7 children with 8 ectopic ureteroceles associated with complete duplicated systems. Two functioning upper renal segments were able to be salvaged with ureteropyeIostomy and common sheath ureteral reimplantation. Four small ureteroceles not associated with reflux managed successfully with upper tract correction only(3 heminephrectomy and 1 ureteropyelostomy). Three children with ectopic ureteroceles associated with reflux and/or outlet obstruction underwent successful one stage total reconstruction which included heminephrectomy, ureterectomy, ureterocelectomy and lower pole ureter reimplantation. In summary, the management of ectopic ureterocele must be individualized taking into considerations the salvageability of renal segments, presence of reflux and/or outlet obstruction.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1992;28(2):237-240
Opacification of the gallbladder after parenteral administration of contrast material usually indicates diminished renal function but can occur with normal renal function. The authors recently experienced 13 cases of such vicarious excretion of contrast media. Among 13 patients. 9 patients had renal disease unilateral ureteral stone(n=3), staghorn calculi(n=2), acute renal failure from sepsis(n=1), renal contusion(n=2) and unilateral renal artery involvement by dissecting aortic aneurysm(n=1). Of these 9 patients, 3 patients showed abnormal serum creatinine levels at the time of presentation or shortly thereafter. In 6 patients, injection of a large amount of contrast media was possibly the additional cause of vicarius excretion. There was no detectable cause in the remaining 4 patients. Heterotopic excretion of contrast media is clearly a complex phenomenon, the reason for which it is difficult to establish with certainty in each individual case. Anyhow, vicarius excretion of contrast media occurs more frequently than previously thought, and it can occur not only with abnormal renal function but with normal function also.

Korean Journal of Urology 1991;32(5):721-724
Laparoscopy was performed successfully at operation in 18 consecutive boys who had 19 nonpalpable testes Of the testes. 2 were in the inguinal region. 6 were in the just proximal to the internal inguinal ring. 2 were high intra-abominal position. and 9 were vanished testes (intracana1icular). In every case of vanished inguinal testis and intracanalicular testis. vas and gonadal vessels were observed laparoscopically to exit the internal inguinal ring. In these vanished testes. hernia or patent processus vaginalis was not observed and contralateral testes were located normally in the scrotum. OF 8 intraabdominal testes. 6 were detected laparoscopically. Laparoscopy provided localization or either testis or the course of spermatic vessels in all patients and these information facilitated accurate planning of operative repair.

Korean Journal of Urology 2003;44(12):1203-1207
PURPOSE: We studied the incidence, risk factors and spontaneous descent of cryptorchidism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 813 consecutive male neonates delivered at Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center during the period from June 2001 to June 2002 were examined at birth for cryptorchidism. Eighty boys with cryptorchidism and 733 normal boys were enrolled in this study. Fifty-six boys with cryptorchidism (87 testes) were followed at 1, 2, 3 and 6 months of age for evaluation of spontaneous testicular descent. Risk factors included birth weight, gestational weeks, other congenital anomalies, Apgar score, birth order, twin birth, mode of delivery, family history of cryptorchidism, maternal age, parity history, previous abortion history and maternal disease history. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios. RESULTS: The incidence of cryptorchidism was 4.4% in full term(28 out of 635) and 28.6% in preterm(52 out of 178) newborns. The overall incidence was 9.8%. All of the nonpalpable testes and 87.8% of bilateral undescended testes were found in premature babies. Low birth weight(<2,500g) and preterm deliveries(<37wks) were significant risk factors for cryptorchidism. All of 25 undescended testes in term boys and 50 undescended testes of premature boys had descended by age 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of cryptorchidism in this study was higher than that of other studies. The premature newborns had a higher incidence of bilateral and nonpalpable cryptorchidism. Low birth weight and preterm deliveries were significant risk factors for cryptorchidism. There was an 86% chance of spontaneous descent by 6 months of age.

7.Ultrastructural changes of corporeal smooth muscle cells invasculogenic impotence.

Korean Journal of Urology 1991;32(3):452-457
Smooth muscle cell, the main contractile-relaxing component of the corpora cavernosa, undergoes degenerative changes when the blood supply of the corpora cavernosa is disturbed and results in erectile dysfunction. Recently, the main cause of venogenic erectile dysfunction has also been reported to be a corporal veno-occulsive dysfunction that develops following the disturbance of physiologic relaxation of the smooth muscle cell of the corpora cavernosa by degenerative and fibrotic change. The outcome of corrective vascular surgeries for both the arteriogenic and venogenic impotence is not so promising so far. The ultrastructural changes of the corporeal smooth muscle cells in 21 arteriogenic, 3 venogenic and 11 diabetogenic impotent men together with 8 psychogenic impotent patients as a control group were compared each other to investigate the pathogenesis of the erectile dysfunction on morphologic basis and validity of the corrective vascular surgery for the vasculogenic impotence. The results were as follows 1. In the psychogenic impotence, the smooth muscle cells showed well preserved contractile filament and dense body. either evenly distributed or conglomated glycogen without thickening of the basal lamina. 2. In the arteriogenic impotence, nearly half of the cases we examined smooth muscle cells showed degenerative changes with thickening of the basal lamina in part, and showed a paucity or the dense bodies and contractile filaments, decreased glycogen comparing to the smooth muscle cells of the psychogenic impotence. 3. In the venogenic impotence, the smooth muscle cells showed marked atrophy and disorganization in addition the thickening of basal lamina. 4. Also in the diabetogenic impotence, the smooth muscle cells showed similar changes to those of the arteriogenic impotence and particularly the basal lamina was more remarkably thickened. It is concluded that the degenerative and fibrotic changes could be a primary. or secondary cause of the venogenic, arteriogenic and diabetogenic impotence, and therefore biopsy of the corpora may be considered to select proper patients before the corrective vascular surgeries and to enhance their success rates.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1984;1(1):199-206
With respect to the histogenesis of the neurofibroma, there are many controversies, since von Recklinghausen postulated that neurofibromas are mainly fibrous tumors arising from the connective tissue of the nerve sheaths. According to the recent studies through the electron microscope, the neoplastic perineurial cells are regarded as the main components of the tumor. So, the neurofibroma enucleated from the median nerve at the level of proximal arm without resulting neurologic sequale was examine through the light-and electron microscope. Ultrastructurally, this tumor is composed of the perineurial cells, fibroblasts, and collagen fibers. The predominant perineurial cells show distinct basal lamina, and contain abundant microfilaments.

9.Primary Retroperitoneal Teratoma: A Case Report.
Korean Journal of Urology 1984;25(1):117-120
Retroperitoneal teratoma is a rare condition in only 10% of all retroperitoneal primary neoplasm and about 200 cases has been recorded since Morgagni`s first description in 1961. Recently we experienced a case of huge retroperitoneal teratoma(18kg), which was suspected by clinical investigation and confirmed by exploration and microscopic examination.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1985;2(1):59-63
Treatment of the olecranon fractures by prolonged immobilization often results in limited elbow motion. With the use of tension band wiring, anatomical reduction was obtainable, and only a short period of immobilization was needed. We reviewed the cases of 17 patients who underwent surgical treatment of the olecranon fracture. All patients were treated by tension band wiring. In the overall series, we were able to obtain 53 percent excellent, 30 percent good, and 18 percent fair results.
