Objective To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of early enteral nutrition (EEN) in elder patients undergoing gastrectomy for gastric carcinoma. Methods An outcome-based retrospective review of 52 patients who had undergone gastrectomy for gastric carcinoma between July 1999 and June 2002 was performed .There were 27 patients in the EEN group, and 25 in the TPN group. 5.Baculovirus-mediated Expression of p35 Confers Resistance to Apoptosis in Human Embryo Kidney 293 cells

Baculovirus has many advantages as vectors for gene transfer. We demonstrated that recombinant baculovirus vectors expressing p35 (Ac-CMV-p35) and eGFP (Ac-CMV-GFP) could be transduced into human kidney 293 cells efficiently. The level of transgene expression was viral dose dependent and high-level expression of the target gene could be achieved under the heterogonous promoter. MTT assay suggested that both Ac-CMV-p35 and Ac-CMV-GFP did not have cytotoxic effect on human embryo kidney 293 cells. Cell growth curve showed the Ac-CMV-p35 and Ac- CMV-GFP transduced and non-transduced cells had similar proliferation rate, so baculovirus-mediated p35expression had no adverse effect on cell proliferation. In addition, baculovirus-mediated p35 gene expression protected human embryo kidney 293 cells against apoptosis induced by various apoptosis inducers such as Actinomycin D, UV or serum-free media. These results suggested that the baculovirus vector mediated p35 gene expression was functional and it could be widely used in molecular research and even gene therapy.
6.Effect of PDTC on MCP-1 in rejection of cardiac allograft

Objective To investigate the effect of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate(PDTC) on monocyte chemotactic protein1 (MCP-1) in rejection of cardiac allograft and its mechanisms.Methods Heterotopic cervical heart transplantation was performed by cuff-technique.The SD rat recipients were randomly divided into 3 groups:AR group (Acute rejection,n =12),both the recipients and donors were without any treatment.CsA group(n =12),the recipients were treated with 10 mg/kg cyclosporine A after transplantation.PDTC group(n =12),the recipients were treated with 100 mg/kg PDTC after transplantation.All the cardiac allografts were harvested at different time post transplantation according to requirements.We studied allograft myocardial fibrosis wih the help of Masson stain,immuno-histo-chemistry and western blot also were used to detect the expression of MCP-1.Results The survival time of the cardiac allografts was significantly longer in PDTC group than in acute rejection group and CsA group(P < 0.01),and myocardial fibrosis of cardiac allografts in PDTC group was significantly decreased (P < 0.01).The IOD in PDTC group was markedly lower than in CsA group (P < 0.01).Conclusion As the inhibitor of NF-κB,PDTC can significantly relieve rejection of cardiac allograft by inhibiting the expression of MCp-1.
7.Effect of Suitable Sport Walking on Heart and Lungs Functions in Old Women

ObjectiveTo observe the effect of sport walking on heart and lungs functions in old women.MethodsForty-two old women aged from 60 to 69 had sport walking for 4 months; the speed and intensity were controlled according to their heart rate respectively. The indexes of respiration, circulation and rheoencephalography were measured before and after exercise.ResultsAfter exercise, blood-pumping function of heart improved obviously, stroke volume increased from (65.22±11.41)ml to (72.10± 10.78)ml, ejection fraction increased from (60.10±5.03)% to (68.78±6.25)%, while heart rate declined from (77.45±8.69) times/min to (7.89±8.21)times/min, capacity increased from (2.86±0.36)L to (3.34±0.53)L, and maximal voluntary ventilation for every minute increased from (96.14± 15.21)L to (114.02±16.01)L, significantly different compared with that before treatment ( P<0.01). The fluid time of rheoencephalography reduced from (0.171±0.058)s to (0.128±0.049)s ( P<0.01).ConclusionSport walking under proper intensity can improve the function of respiration and circulation system in old women, so it is a good way to keep health for the elders.

Objective To sum up our experience in the diagnosis and management of acute superior mesenteric venous thrombosis (SMVT). Methods We retrospectively reviewed 41 patients treated for acute SMVT admitted in our hospital from Jan 1978 to Aug 2003. Before 1995 (group Ⅰ), a surgery was preformed in patients with suspected acute SMVT. Since Jan 1995 (Group Ⅱ), aggressive medical therapy was immediately delivered, and the patients were subjected to laparatomy with suspected peritonity. Objective To determine whether the novel surface-anchored protein SasX promotes aggregation of S.aureus and adherence of S.aureus to human nasal epithelial cells.Methods MRSA ST-239 HS770 sasX gene mutant ( HS770 △sasX) and complement [ HS770 △sasX (pRBsasX) ] were gotten by gene knock-out and complement methods.The aggregation ability of S.aureus was observed through microscope.By adherence assay which was used for detection of the adherence ability of wild type and mutant to human nasal epithelial cells and blocking experiments which detected the ability of the purified recombinant SasX protein in blocking the adherence of S.aureus to human nasal epithelial cells,we investigated the influence SasX on colonization of S.aureus.Results Compared to wild type,HS770△sasX showed a reduction in cell aggregation,while the complement had no difference with wild type in aggregation. HS770 △sasX showed a significant reduction of adherence to human nasal epithelial cells compared to wild type ( P<0.01 ),and the complement showed a very clear increasement of adherence to human nasal epithelial cells compared to wild type(P<0.01 ).Preincubation of nasal epithelial cells with the purified recombinant SasX protein inhibited S.aureus binding significantly.Conclusion SasX had an influence in aggregation of S.aureus and its adherence to human nasal epithelial cells.By acquiring sasX,S.aureus colonized more easily to the susceptible sites of the host,and thus caused infection.
10.Defective Fas function of T lymphocytes in patients with abdominal aortic anenrysm

Objective To assess apoptosis mediated by the cell death receptor Fas in peripheral T lymphocytes of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm. Methods The apoptotic pathway was triggered by anti-Fas monoclonal antibody in cultured and activated peripheral T-cells from 20 AAA patients. Control groups consisted of 15 patients with aortic atherosclerotic occlusive disease(AOD)and 25 healthy individuals. Cell survival and death rate were assessed. Results Cross-linkage of Fas receptor exerted a strong apoptotic response on T cells from AOD patients and healthy controls, while the effect on T cells was very limited from that of AAA patients. The evaluation of cell Survival rate showed a significantly higher percentage in AAA group(98.9%±10.3%)than in the AOD subjects(58.9%±15.2%)or the healthy group(59.4%±12.9%;P<0.001=.Apoptosis assessment by annexin V and propidium iodide staining and flow cytometry showed similar results. The defect in AAA group was not due to decreased fas expressed at normal levels. Moreover,it specifically involved the Fas system because cell death was induced in the normal way by methylprednisolone. Conclusions Fas-induced apoptosis in activated T cell from AAA patients is impaired. This may disturb the normal down-regulation of the immune response and thus provide a new insight into possible mechanisms and routes in the pathogenesis of AAA.
