Objective To discuss the surgical method of resection of petroclival tumors used temporal base transtentorial approach. Methods Analyzed 26 cases of petroclival tumors. All of them were surgically treated under intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring by temporal base transtentorial approach.Firstly the supratentorial part of tumors were resected by pieces, and then the tentorium was cut open,in order to resect residue of the subtentorial part of tumors. This surgical maneuver was applied to reduce the retraction to surrounding vessels, nerves and brain stem,as well to protect important structures and to finally achieve radical removal of the tumors. The efficacy and complications were observed. Results Among 26 cases,19 cases (73.1%,19/26) achieved total removal,5 cases (19.2 %,5/26) achieved subtotal removal and 2 cases (7.7%,2/26) achieved great partial removal. There was no surgery-related death.Eleven cases suffered from partial neurological deficit. All cases were followed up for 3 months to 4 years,3 cases underwent complete recovery,4 cases underwent partial recovery, and 4 cases underwent permanent deficit. Conclusions Using temporal base transtentorial approach to resect petroclival tumors is convenient, applicable, safe and with minimal injury and with high proportionality of total resection.Under intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, this approach may be an ideal choice for surgical treatment of these tumors.

Objective To investigate the effect of rehabilitation professional training. Methods Based on the 10 tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou, Guangdong, the professionals from communitiy hospitals were trained. The scores of knowledge and practice tests were analyzed in 2 terms of training. Results The students performed better in the practice test (82.01±8.91) than knowledge (71.08±10.05) (P<0.01). The score of knowledge tests was better in the second term than the first (P<0.05), no difference between them in the score of practice test. Conclusion Rehabilitation professional training in Guangzhou can improve the ability of service of medical rehabilitation.

This study is to investigate the effect of recombinant human interferon alpha 2b against broad-spectrum respiratory viruses in vitro. At the cellular level, the effect of the recombinant human interferon alpha 2b on influenza A virus was detected using real-time fluorescence quantitative RT-PCR. The effects of the recombinant human interferon alpha 2b on influenza B virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and coronavirus were detected using cytopathic effect (CPE) method. In this study, the therapeutic index of recombinant human interferon alpha 2b anti-HPIV was 1476.63, the therapeutic index of recombinant human interferon alpha 2b anti-RSV was 141.37, the therapeutic index of recombinant human interferon alpha 2b anti-coronavirus was more than 2820.76, and the antiviral effect of recombinant human interferon alpha 2b was better than ribavirin (RBV). Recombinant human interferon alpha 2b has a stronger inhibitory effect on different influenza A virus RNA than drug control. The therapeutic index of recombinant human interferon alpha 2b anti-influenza B virus was 2.74, with modest effect. Recombinant human interferon alpha 2b in vitro has broad spectrum antiviral activities, low toxicity and high therapeutic index. Recombinant human interferon alpha 2b is expected to become the efficient medicine in clinical against respiratory viruses, as well as provide better services for prevention and treatment of respiratory viruses' infections.

7.Professor Sun Shen-tian's experience in treatment of mental diseases.
Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2009;29(8):639-641
Professor SUN Shen-tian is an expert in acupuncture and moxibustion science of TCM and neurology, especially in the treatment of neurology difficult diseases by using the therapy of acupuncture and moxibustion and combination of TCM with western medicine, showing his ingenuity and obvious therapeutic effect. In treating mental diseases, professor SUN considers that the morbidity of mental diseases is mainly related to the malfunction of brain, therefore regulating mind is the key to treat this kind of disease, Baihui (GV 20), Yintang (EX-HN 3), emotional area and Zone 1 of SUN's abdominal acupoints are often selected. This present article introduces the principle of treatment based on syndrome differentiation and routine selecting acupoints, attached with four effective cases in treating mental diseases by professor SUN applying "the methods of regulating vitality and increasing intelligence".

BACKGROUND:The smal intestinal submucosa has good biocompatibility and biodegradability, and also contains a variety of growth factors that can significantly promote celladhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Currently, the smal intestinal submucosa has been widely used in bone and cartilage, blood vessels, skin, bladder, smooth muscle and pancreatic tissue repair, showing good performance as a tissue-engineered cellscaffold.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the in vitro feasibility of tissue engineered periosteum constructed by porcine smal intestinal submucosa and osteoblasts differentiated from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.
METHODS:Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were harvested from 2-week-old healthy New Zealand rabbits by using adherent method, and then cells were cultured, induced, differentiated and identified in vitro. Fol owing induced differentiation and identification, the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were compounded with porcine smal intestinal submucosa to fabricate tissue engineered periosteum. The adhesion, growth, and proliferation of cells on the materials were observed.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:At 5 days after inoculation, the cells receiving osteogenic induction could quickly adhere and proliferate on the surface of porcine smal intestinal submucosa and be interconnected;at 10 days, the desmosomes formed among the cells, cellprocesses from osteoblasts were visible and attached to the smal intestine submucosa;at 15 days, cellproliferation and secretion of matrix appeared, and multi-layer membrane-like structure formed on the surface of the smal intestine submucosa. These findings indicate that after osteogenic induction, the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be combined with porcine smal intestinal submucosa to construct a tissue engineered periosteum, which is hoped to be an ideal scaffold for tissue engineering.
