OBJECTIVETo explore risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in men in order to provide a theoretical basis for developing more effective NAFLD prevention and control strategies.
METHODSOne-hundred-and-two male patients (37.3+/-11.4 years old) hospitalized with NAFLD at the Dongnan Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University between January 2009 and December 2010 were enrolled in the study, along with 23 age-matched healthy men (34.4+/-16.7 years old) to serve as the control group. The correlation(s) of body mass index (BMI; overweight defined as more than or equal to 22.717 kg/m2), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR; central obesity defined as more than or equal to 0.866), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) with NAFLD was analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to select proper thresholds for classification.
RESULTSBMI, WC, WHR, FPG, TG, and TC were significantly different between the cases and controls (P less than 0.01). BMI, WC, WHR, TG and TC were identified as risk factors of NAFLD in these male cases (P less than 0.01). Relative to WC, TG and TC, both BMI and WHR had significant predictive value for NAFLD (odds ratio (OR) = 10.819 and 10.588, respectively). In addition, BMI had the highest diagnostic value for the prediction of NAFLD (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.931) followed by WHR (AUC = 0.879).
CONCLUSIONBMI, WC, WHR, TG, and TC are risk factors of NAFLD in Chinese men. BMI and WHR are effective anthroposomatology indices of NAFLD and may be useful factors on which to base future prevention and early diagnosis strategies for NAFLD in males.

Although there were changes in measuring system of Sui dynasty, the measuring units of medicine, astronomy and music still remained unchanged. So there appeared two systems of measuring units. For medicine, the government of Tang dynasty followed the regulations of Sui dynasty in measuring system. Besides this, the measuring units of Qian and Fen also were also related to medicine.

There were some changes for the measuring units of medicine in Wei, Jin and Southern and Northern dynasty. The measuring units of length showed decreased usage in medicine measuring, while increased usage of weight units. Weight unit was also used for measuring medicines that had been measured by imitate unit or assessed unit. Besides, some special measuring units for medicine appeared in this period of time.

This study is to investigate the effect of phenylhexyl isothiocyanate (PHI), which has been proved to be a novel histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) recently, on gene p15 de novo expression in acute leukemia cell line Molt-4, and to further study its potential mechanism. Modified methylation specific PCR (MSP) was used to screen p15-M and p15-U mRNA. DNA methyltransferasel (DNMT1), 3A (DNMT3A), 3B (DNMT3B) and p15 mRNA were measured by RT-PCR. P15 protein was detected by Western blotting. Hypermethylation of gene p15 was reversed and activation transcription of gene p15 in Molt-4 was de novo after 5 days exposure to PHI in a concentration dependent manner. DNMT1 and DNMT3B were inhibited by exposure to PHI for 5 days (P < 0.05). Alteration of DNMT3A was not significant. It is showed that PHI could reverse hypermethylation of gene p15 and transcriptional activation of gene p15 is de novo by PHI. It may result from down-regulating DNA methyltransferases, DNMT1 and DNMT3B, or up-regulating the histone acetylation that allows chromatin unfolding and the accessibility of regulators for transcriptional activation in the p15 promoter.

Besides the changes in weight measuring units, the other units also changed. "Larger and smaller liter" affected traditional Chinese medicine. Length measuring units was little used, and the irregular measuring units such as imitate units, quantity units, and assessing units remained in some extent. Because the regular measuring units gradually replaced the irregular ones, some doctors made investigates to the conversion of these measuring units.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2008;33(21):2574-2576
In the Song dynasties, the irregular measuring units were seldom used in medicine and length units were no longer used in medicine. The volume units changed from "ancient ones" to "modern ones". There were necessary regulations on the conversion of measuring units of medicine in medical books officially published. Doctor Chenyan made detailed investigations to ancient measuring units.

The original changes of the weight measuring unit of medicine in the Song dynasties was the appearance of Dengzi (small steelyard for weighing money). The "larger scale" and "smaller scale" were unified. The measuring unit "qian" was widely used, and furthermore "Cheng" and "zi" were used as measuring units related to medicine.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2005;13(5):804-808
The study was aimed to explore the role of gene JWA, a novel retinoic acid responsible and cytoskeleton associate gene, in regulating committed differentiation of HL-60 cell and the molecular mechanism in the course of differentiation and apoptosis of leukemic cells. By using FCM, the changes of CD13, CD14, CD15, CD11b and cell cycles were detected in HL-60 cells treated with ATRA (10(-6) mol/L), Ara-C (10 ng/ml) and TPA (10(-8) mol/L) respectively. The samples were determined by semi-quantitative reverse transcript-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot for the expression of JWA, Bcl-2, HSP27 and HSP70 at day 0, 2, 4, 6, 8. The results showed that HL-60 cells committedly differentiated into granulocyte-, monocyte-, macrophage-like cells. As a result, JWA was up-regulated in a time-dependent manner, while Bcl-2 was down- regulated at the same time. In ATRA and TPA group, the change of HSP70 had positive correlation with JWA, and negative correlation with Bcl-2. The expression of HSP27 was not detected. Contrast to the cells from APL patient, the expression of JWA need not be activated by ATRA in advance. In this study, we also exposed HL-60 cells in higher dose of Ara-C (20 ng/ml), and JWA expression underwent opposite trend comparing with in lower dose of Ara-C (10 ng/ml). It is concluded that JWA may play double important roles in regulating ATRA and TPA-induced differentiation and apoptosis in leukemic cells. The JWA expression had a negative correlation between induction and cytotoxic response. The difference of JWA expressions between HL-60 cell and ANLL patient cells would be involved in different leukemia pathogenesis.

Objective To explore the feasibility of "immersion program" in French-taught surgical lessons,as to provide multiple educational methods and practical experiences for the application of bilingual education in clinical medicine. Methods Twenty-nine senior students of French-taught class were randomly divided into group A(n=15) and group B(n=14)."Immersion program" and "transitional bilingual education" were employed for group A and group B,respectively for the first half of teaching session, and "transitional bilingual education" and "immersion program" for the second half, respectively. The differences between the two bilingual education models were compared through quiz. Results In the prior 2 of the 4 quiz, the scores of French quiz and the total scores were much higher in "immersion program" group, and there were significant differences between the two groups(P0.05). Conclusion "Immersion program" helps to improve the ability of presentation, comprehension and application of French in the precondition of equal educational content, and it will be more beneficial when accessing the "immersion program" on the basis of "transitional bilingual education".

Objective To determine the prevention and therapy of fungal infection in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Methods Seventy patients with SAP admitted from July,1998 to June,2002 were randomly divided into 3 groups: garlicin prevention group, fluconazole (low dosage) prevention group and control group. The incidence of fungal infection, the fungal clearance and mortality after the treatment were compared. Results The incidence of fungal infection in garlicin group and fluconazole group was lower than that in control group. (16%∶30%,P
