Objective To observe the clinical changes in resin and porcelain veneer in restoring dental fluorosis in order to provide a basis for the repair of dental fluorosis. Methods Fifty six severe dental fluorosis patients were divided into porcelain and resin teeth group in the department of Prosthetics, school of Stomatology, Harbin Medical University during 2005 to 2008. All 162 teeth of 25 patients in porcelain group were veneered with porcelain. 201 teeth of 31 patients in resin group were repaired with resin. To evaluat the clinic effect, the veneer surface color was detected by the Easyshade computer-aided colorimeter when the repair was completed and 18 months afterward. The edge of veneer adaptation, retention, secondary caries and abutment were examined after 18 months, and classified by color, shape, function and feeling. Results The color difference between the porcelain and resin teeth group was 0.27±0.20 and 0.21±0.15 when it was completed, and it was 0.28±0.21 and 0.77± 0.68 respectively after 18 months. The color difference value of the porcelain teeth group was lower when it was completed than 18 months later(t=-13.55, P<0.01). The color difference value of the resin teeth group was lower than the porcelain teeth group after 18 months(t=-12.60, P<0.01). The percentage of level A of veneer adaptation in the porcelain group[100%(162/162)] was higher than the resin group[91.04% (183/201), χ2=15.26, P< 0.01) after 18 months. The clinical effect was divided into three degrees of excellent, moderate or failed, into which the number of the teeth catergorized was 158, 4 and 0 in porcelain group, 148, 56 and 4 in resin group respectively. The clinical effect of the porcelain group was superior to the resin group(χ2=44.24, P<0.01). Conclusions The surface color of porcelain veneer last 16nger than the resin veneer, the adaptation and clinical effect is also superior to the resin veneer. But the long-term efficacy of two methods needs further study, especially of the resin veneer.

Objective To explore the feasibility of culturing dermal papillae cells (DPC) of hu- man hair in a serum-flee medium, and to observe the growth characteristics of these cells. Methods Cell culture flasks (plates) were pretreated with fibronectin, and DPC (2nd passage) were incubated with Williams E serum-flee medium supplemented with insulin-transferrin-selenite (ITS).Cells were observed by an inverted phase-contrast microscope.Proliferation of DPC was evaluated with 3-(4,5-dimethylthia- zol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and by their growth curve. Results In a serum-free medium,2nd passage DPC adhered to the flask surface within two to four hours of incubation; two to three days later, confluence,of the cells was observed, without noticeable proliferation.Four days later, cell connection was interrupted, isolated cells or cell clusters were seen, and detachment of some cells from the flask surface was observed. One to two weeks later, most cells had died. After incubation with 4% bovine serum for ten hours, cell proliferation was observed surrounding the remaining viable cell colonies. DPC growth curve showed stagnant phase and slow growth phase;however, log growth phase was not ob- served. Conclusion DPC could be successfully cultured in serum-free medium. However, the culture con- dition needs to be further optimized.

OBJECTIVE:
To study the percentages of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), mononuclear cells (MNC) and fibroblastic cells (FBC) in different post-traumatic intervals after skeletal muscle mechanical injury in rats.
METHODS:
The rat model of skeletal muscle mechanical injury was established. The rats were divided into injured groups (6 h, 12 h, 1 d, 3 d, 7 d, 10 d and 14 d after injury) and control group. The percentages of PMN, MNC and FBC in different post-traumatic intervals after skeletal muscle mechanical injury were assessed with HE staining and image analysis.
RESULTS:
At post-injury 6-12h, the percentages of PMN and MNC infiltration appeared in injured sites and that of PMN reached peak. At 1 d, the percentage of MNC infiltration appeared and reached peak, while that of PMN decreased. At 3-7 d, the percentage of FBC gradually increased, while that of PMN and MNC decreased. At 10-14d, the percentage of FBC reached peak.
CONCLUSION
The percentages of PMN, MNC and FBC in injured zones showed time-dependent changes, which might be used as reference index for determination of age of skeletal muscle injury.

Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2011;46(4):237-240
OBJECTIVETo observe the microstructure changes of rat alveolar bone around tooth root under orthodontic force loading.
METHODSTen 10-week-old rats were included in the study. Upper first molars were moved mesially with 0.196 N of force. The alveolar bone around the root of upper first molar was scanned by a micro-computed tomography scan system (SkyScan-1076) in different period after the initiation of orthodontic force loading (on the 3rd, 7th, 14th day after force loading) and analyzed by a specially-designed software to measure the microstructure parameters of alveolar bone (bone volume fraction, bone surface to volume ratio, structure model index, trabecular thickness, trabecular separation, trabecular number).
RESULTSFrom the 7th day, bone volume fraction [(41 ± 14)%], structure model index (1.51 ± 0.52) and trabecular separation [(90 ± 30) µm] changed significantly in the compressive area compared with those [(64 ± 15)%, (0.51 ± 0.85), (56 ± 10) µm] on the 3rd day. From the 14th day, bone volume fraction [(78 ± 14)%], structure model index (0.28 ± 0.20) and trabecular separation [(29 ± 13) µm] changed significantly in the tension area compared with those [(67 ± 14)%, (0.40 ± 0.41), (48 ± 15) µm] on the 7th day. No difference on trabecular number was found between the compressive area and tension area (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe significant resorption of the alveolar bone was observed on the 7th days in the compressive area and the deposition of the alveolar bone was observed on the 14th day in the compressive area after orthodontic force loading.

OBJECTIVE:
To research the relation between the time-dependent appearances of myotibroblasts during the repair of contused skeletal muscle in rat and wound age determination.
METHODS:
A total of 35 SD male rats were divided into the control and six injured groups according to wound age as follows: 12 h, 1 d, 5 d, 7 d, 10 d and 14 d after injury. The appearances of myofibroblasts were detected by HE staining, immunohistochemistry and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Masson's trichrome staining was utilized to examine collagen accumulation in the contused areas.
RESULTS:
Immunohistochemical staining showed that α-SMA+ myofibroblasts were initially observed at 5 d post-injury. The average ratio of myofibroblasts was highest at 14 d post-injury, with all samples, ratios more than 50%. In the other five groups, the average of α-SMA positive ratios were less than 50%. The collagen stained areas in the contused zones, concomitant with myofibroblast appearance, were increasingly augmented along with advances of posttraumatic interval.
CONCLUSION
The immunohistochemical detection of myofibroblasts can be applied to wound age determination. The myofibroblasts might be involved in collagen deposition during the repair of contused skeletal muscle in rat.
