Antibacterial therapy is a global health issue. The antibiotic resistance is becoming an increasingly serious threat, which caused by misuse and overuse of antibacterial agents combined with the emergence of new resistance mechanism. The resulting infection treatment risk and incidence of the spread of disease, severe cases and deaths are increased in different degrees. With the extensive application of biomaterials and nanotechnology to biomedicine, extensive research has been conducted on antibacterial infection. With the specific physicochemical properties like optical, electric and magnetic and high penetration, inorganic nanomaterials can produce natural antibacterial effect. Nanomedicine can be designed to allow controlled drug release and targeting effect, thus demonstrated better antibacterial efficiency. In this review, the mechanism of antibacterial resistance is described, and the antibacterial infection research on inorganic nanomaterials, as well as nano-drug delivery system including liposomes, nanoparticles, dendrimers and biomimetic nanocarriers are summarized. Nanomaterials and nanotechnology offer promising strategies for the development of new agents that can improve efficacy on antibacterial infections and overcome antibiotic resistance potentially.

OBJECTIVETo compare the therapeutic effect and toxicity of chemotherapy, used alone or in combined with Shenqi Fuzheng Injection (SFI), for the treatment of advanced colorectal carcinoma (ACRC).
METHODSOne hundred and fifty-two patients with ACRC were equally randomized by digital table, to the treated group, treated by chemotherapy of FOLFOX regimen combined with SFI, and the control group treated by FOLFOX regimen alone. The therapeutic effect and adverse reaction of the treatment in patients were assessed.
RESULTSThe effective rate (CR +PR) was 63.2% (48/76) in the treated group and 46.1% (35/76) in the control group, showing significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05). The median survival time in the two groups was 31 weeks and 28 weeks respectively. CD4/CD8 ratio was significantly increased in the treated group (1.56 +/- 0.21, 1.64 +/- 0.28, P < 0.05), but significantly decreased in the control group (1.58 +/- 0.22, 1.46 +/- 0.33, P < 0.01). Quality of life in the former group was higher than that in the latter group (P < 0.05). Times/case of nausea, vomiting, leukopenia occurring in the control group was more than those in the treated group A (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONBy combining with SFI, some adverse reactions of chemotherapy (such as nausea, vomiting, leukopenia) and its influence on patients' immunity could be alleviated in treating ACRC, which might enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy, and improve the quality of life and prolong the median survival time in patients.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical effects of anterior transpediclar screw (ATPS) fixation in treating lower cervical spine fracture and dislocation.
METHODSFrom January 2009 to December 2011, 18 patients with lower cervical spine fracture and dislocation were treated with ATPS technique, including 12 males and 6 females, aged from 17 to 47 years old with an average of 38.2 years. Severity score of lower cervical spine injuries (SLIC) ranged from 6 to 9 points with an average of 7.5 points. According to ASIA grade of spinal cord injury, 2 cases were classified in grade A, 8 cases in grade B, 6 cases in grade C and 2 cases in grade D. X-ray and CT scan were done after surgery in order to evaluate the safety of ATPS and observe the stability and fusion of injured segment. Spinal cord function was evaluated according to ASIA grade at 3 months after operation and last follow-up.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up for 6 to 15 months with an average of 9.5 months. Three months after operation, in aspect of spinal cord function, 8 cases improved 1 grade, 2 cases improved 2 grades; and at final follow-up, 7 cases improved 1 grade, 4 cases improved 2 grades. All patients obtained bony fusion 6 to 8 months after operation with an average of 6.5 months. After operation, 1 case had transient hoarseness and recovered 2 months later;2 cases felt swallowing discomfort, but the symptoms disappeared after about 3 weeks by inhalation. No internal fixation breakage and loosening as well as nerve, blood vessel and esophageal injuries were found.
CONCLUSIONAs for three columns injury caused by lower cervical spine fracture and dislocation, treatment with anterior transpediclar screw reconstruction can achieve the effect of decompression thoroughly and restore the cervical spine height and physiological curvature. Moreover, this kind of treatment has good stability and can create the favorable conditions for the recovery of spinal cord function.

Objective To analyze composition principles of prescriptions for the treatment of diarrhoea caused by deficiency of spleen. Methods The prescriptions for diarrhoea caused by deficiency of spleen in the Prescriptions of Traditional Chinese Medicine Dictionary were collected, sorted and entered into the TCM Inheritance Support System (V1.3) to analyze the composition principles through the methods of entropy clustering and apriori. Results Based on the analysis of 1185 prescriptions and 815 medications, there were 33 medications with more than 50 frequencies. Composition principles were obtained through apriori method:50 herbal pairs were used with more than 50 frequencies, and 29 core combinations with more than 40 frequencies. Association principle rule were used for the analysis of those medications in the prescriptions (support≥20%, confidence≥0.9). Principles were obtained through entropy clustering:there were 19 core combinations which composed the new prescriptions, and 19 new prescriptions were found through hierarchical clustering method. There were 17 prescriptions matching with Sijunzi decoction (semblance=0.5). Conclusion Diarrhoea caused by deficiency of spleen should be treated with strengthening spleen and benefiting qi primarily, assisting with warming yang, excreting dampness and checking diarrhoea.

Melittin exhibits high antibacterial potency against drug-resistant bacteria. However, the clinical utility of melittin is limited by its serious hemolytic activity. Thus, the need for developing novel melittin analogues with high antimicrobial activity and low hemolytic activity has grown. We designed, synthesized, and evaluated 20 novel melittin analogues with varying hydrophobic, polar or positively charged amino acids. The results showed that 8 compounds had antimicrobial activity (MIC: 1-4 μg·mL-1) against gram-positive pathogens equal to or better than that of melittin, and 16 compounds had low hemolytic activity (HC50 ≥ 11.9 μg·mL-1). Objective To investigate the effect of BDNF on cell injuries, cell apoptosis especially, induced by 25-35 segment of β-amyloid protein (Aβ25-35) at condensed state in PC12 cells. Methods The viability of PC12 cells, the apoptosis of PC12 cells and the expressions of Bax and Bcl-2 were detected by MTT, Annexin V-PI staining and Western blotting, respectively. Trk B receptor inhibitor K252a (200 nmol/l) was employed to observe the mechanism of 50 ng/ml BDNF on Aβ25-35 (20 μmol/L)-induced cell injury. Results BDNF (50 ng/ml) could significantly prevent the decrease of cell viability and cell apoptosis, and the increase of Bax expression and the decrease of Bcl-2 expression induced by 20 μmol/L Aβ25-35, and prevent the increase of up-regulation of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio; and these effects were blocked by K252a (200 nmol/1). Conclusion BDNF can prevent Aβ25-35-induced cell injury, cell apoptosis especially, by binding to its specific receptor Trk B.
