Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2003;38(6):444-446
OBJECTIVETo study the clinicopathology of osteosarcoma in oral and maxillofacial region.
METHODSClinical, histopathological features of 61 cases of osteosarcoma in oral and maxillofacial region were studied.
RESULTSThe ratio of male to female was 1.26:1, with the mean age 39.8. 32.8% cases were occurred in maxilla and 57.4% cases in mandible. Histologically 55.7% were osteoblastic, 16.4% were chondroblastic and 21.3% were fibroblastic. All tumors presented common histological feature that the neoplastic cells produced neoplastic bone. The recurrence rate of the tumor was 39.1% and the metastasis rate to lung was 8.7%.
CONCLUSIONSOral and maxillofacial osteosarcoma was most frequently occurred in mandible. There was no significant difference in patient's gender. Patients were about 10 years older than those suffered the tumor in long bone. Osteoblastic type was the most commonly occurred histological type. The recurrence rate of the tumor was relatively high and the metastasis rate to lung was low. It seems that the tumor had good prognosis than osteosarcoma of long bone.

OBJECTIVETo explore the impact of the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir on Oncomelania snail habitats of Poyang Lake.
METHODSFour counties with schistosomiasis endemic around the Poyang Lake, naming as Xingzi, Duchang, Jinxian and Xinjian, were selected as study areas. The average daily water level of four major hydrological stations near the above 4 counties from 1997 to 2008 were collected, as well as the elevation of 215 marshlands with snails in those 4 counties, the data of schistosomiasis endemic situation and snail survey of 4 counties in the year before the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir (2002) and the 6th year after the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir (2008). The fluctuations of water levels of Poyang Lake, flooding day of marshland with snails as well as the changes of the indicators in snail survey and prevention and control measures before and after the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir were compared.
RESULTSBefore the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir, the fluctuations of average water level of the four hydrological stations around Poyang Lake was 6.91-12.93 m; which reduced to 5.72 - 10.75 m after the impoundment. The D-value of the fluctuations of average water level was (1.06 ± 0.47) m. The date of the annual maximum water level delayed by an average of 12 d; while the date of annual minimum water level arrived an average of 12 d earlier than the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir. The average flooding days of marshland with snails were separately (100.04 ± 42.06) d before the impoundment and (64.13 ± 22.30) d after the impoundment. The difference was statistically significant (t = 3.70, P < 0.05). The density of snails in the 4 counties around Poyang Lake was 0.8437/0.1 m(2) after the impoundment; declining by 31.04% from the snail density (1.2234/0.1 m(2)) before the impoundment. The density of infectious snails was 0.0014/0.1 m(2) after the impoundment; dropping by 67.34% from it (0.0042/0.1 m(2)) before the impoundment; the infection rate of snails was separately 0.34% after the impoundment and 0.16% before the impoundment. The difference was statistically significant (χ(2) = 53.25, P < 0.05). The coverage rate of chemotherapy increased from 4.45% (35 558/798 200) in 2002 to 9.80% (79 457/810 400) in 2008; the difference was statistically significant (χ(2) = 17 336.63, P < 0.05). The coverage rate of snail killing increased from 1.35% (389.04/28 824.66) in 2002 to 7.49% (2260.90/30 166.22) in 2008; the difference was also statistically significant (χ(2) = 28 824.66, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe impact of the impoundment of Three Gorges reservoir shortened the flooding days of marshland with snails and helped the prevention and control of schistosomiasis in Poyang Lake regions as the environment went against the breeding of the snails.

OBJECTIVETo transform HPV E6/E7 immortalized human oral epithelial cell (HIOEC) line cells by benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P] in vitro, and to establish a carcinogenesis model of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
METHODSHIOEC cells were treated with 0.1 mg/L-1.2 mg/L B(a)P for 6 months. The cells were cloned at 18th passage, and then the culture medium was changed into DMEM containing 10% FBS at 21th passage. Cells were cultured in vitro for half and one year and the cell line was named HIOEC-B(a)P. The morphological changes of the cells were observed with differential interference contrast microscope and HE staining. The soft agar colony forming ability and tumorigenicity of the cells in nude mice were identified to confirm the malignant characteristics of HIOEC-B(a)P cells.
RESULTS(1) After HIOEC cells were treated with B(a)P for 6 months, HIOEC-B(a)P cells could grow well in DMEM medium containing 10% FBS and physical concentration of calcium. (2) When HIOEC cells were treated with chemical carcinogens, the morphology of the cells was changed. Cells showed the character of polygon epithelial cells with much atypical mitosis. (3) The 93th passage of HIOEC-B(a)P cells had soft agar colony formation ability. (4) The 55th passage of HIOEC-B(a)P cells could develop parakeratosis mass. The 69th passage of HIOEC-B(a)P cells could develop typical well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The 74th and the 96th HIOEC-B(a)P cells developed I-II grade squamous cell carcinoma-like clinical lesions in nude mice.
CONCLUSIONSB(a)P may induce HIOEC cells to be oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) carcinogenetic cells. It will provide a multiple factors, multistage carcinogenesis model of OSCC for the further research.

Objective To detect and analyze the clusters of schistosomiasis on marshland and lake areas based on geographic information system (GIS) in 2008 and to provide suggestions for the development of integrated methodology on the detection of clusters on related diseases. Methods Moran' s I of global spatial autocorrelation, Getis-Ord Gi of local spatial autocorrelation and SaTScan were used to detect the schistosomiasis clusters based on GIS and comparison of the results for different methods were performed. Results Results from the global Moran' s I tests for all the marshland and lake areas related to the schistosomiasis were statistically significant (P<0.05)and indicated spatial heterogeneity; the z-score outcomes as calculated by Getis-Ord Gi indicated high cluster that 50 clusters were categorized at the 0.05 significance level and the z-score of these 45 clusters were more than 0. Results of SaTScan statistics appeared the same as local spatial autocorrelation and almost showing the existence of 5 cluster areas. Conclusion The geographical distribution of clusters where schistosomiasis was prevalent showed that it was closely corresponded to the middle and lower Yangtse river and in particular, many clusters were located near the boundary of Hubei and Hunan province.

OBJECTIVETo compare the difference between digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and type B ultrasonography in the evaluation of vascular injury in patients inflicted with high voltage electrical injury.
METHODSNineteen patients with high voltage electrical injury of upper limbs were enrolled in the study as burn group, and another 12 healthy volunteers as controls. The endovascular membrane, vascular wall thickness, intra-vascular blood flow and endovascular thrombosis formation of ulnar and radial arteries at wound site and in regions 5, 10 and 15 cm proximal to the wounds were examined by DSA and type B ultrasonography and compared with imagings of healthy volunteers as control. The injury degree of the ulnar and radial arteries was examined during operation for evaluation to corroborate with DSA and ultrasonography findings. Necrotic and/or thrombotic vessels were excised and sent for pathomorphological examination.
RESULTSBy DSA images abnormal signs as thrombosis, vascular lumen stenosis and blood flow deceleration were found in 14 ulnar and 11 radial arteries, and the signs were more pronounced in ulnar arteries. By type B ultrasonography, abnormal signs as roughing of tunica intima, swelling or exfoliation, thickening of vascular wall, lumen stenosis, decreased blood flow, even necrosis of vascular wall and thrombosis were identified in 19 ulnar and 16 radial arteries in burn group (P < 0.05 approximately 0.01). The blood flow in ulnar artery 5 cm to the approximal part of the wound edge was obvious lower than that of the control (31.60 +/- 13.90 ml/min vs 47.70 +/- 9.60 ml/min, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONType B ultrasonography and DSA could be helpful in the evaluation of vascular injury in patients inflicted with high voltage electrical injury.

Background:The Food and Drug Administration recently announced that the use of morcellation may cause fibroids or pelvic dissemination and metastasis of uterine sarcoma;therefore, the use of morcellation is limited in the USA.A large sample study is necessary to assess the proportion of uterine malignant tumors found in patients with laparoscopic myomectomy. Methods:A national multicenter study was performed in China. From 2002 to 2014,33,723 cases were retrospectively selected. We calculated the prevalence and recorded the clinical characteristics of the patients with malignancy after morcellation application.A total of 62 cases were finally pathologically confirmed as malignant postoperatively.Additionally, the medical records of the 62 patients were analyzed in details. Results:The proportion of postoperative malignancy after morcellation application was 0.18% (62/33,723) for patients who underwent laparoscopic myomectomy.Nearly 62.9% (39/62) of patients had demonstrated blood flow signals in the uterine fibroids before surgery.And,23 (37.1%) patients showed rapid growth at the final preoperative ultrasound. With respect to the pathological types,38 (61.3%) patients had detectable endometrial stromal sarcoma,13 (21.0%) had detectable uterine leiomyosarcoma, only 3 (3.2%) had detectable carcinosarcoma, and 5 (8.1%) patients with leiomyoma had an undetermined malignant potential. Conclusions:The proportion of malignancy is low after using morcellation in patients who undergo laparoscopic myomectomy.Patients with fast-growing uterine fibroids and abnormal ultrasonic tumor blood flow should be considered for malignant potential, and morcellation should be avoided.
