Giant cell tumor (GCT) is rare and it mainly occurred in male patients. A man of 65 years-old with progressive dyspnea has a 4 cm x 4 cm x 3 cm tumor mass under the right vocal fold originated from right-thyroid cartilage and the parapharyngeal space. The right false vocal was involved in the computed tomography (CT) imaging and laryngoscope. Microscopically, the tumors had an expansile, infiltrative growth and consisted of numerous multinucleated osteoclast-like giant cells within a cellular stroma composed of plump and oval mononuclear cells. The patient underwent partial laryngectomy and has been followed up for 6 months without recurrence or metastasis.

OBJECTIVE:
To discuss the role of carbon nanoparticles in the protection of parathyroid during thyroid carcinoma surgery.
METHOD:
Seventy-two patients with thyroid carcinoma who had initial surgery were randomly divided into two groups: carbon nanoparticles group and the control group. Emulsion of carbon nanoparticles was injected into the thyroid gland of carbon nanoparticles group patients. After thirty minutes, the excision of thyroid carcinoma and VI group neck dissection were performed in carbon nanoparticles group patients, the control group directly underwent operation. The black stained tissue in the dissection specimen of carbon nanoparticles group was separated. The number of total lymph node, metastasis lymph node and parathyroid gland in the tissure black stained or not in two groups were counted respectively.
RESULTS:
There were 312 lymph nodes in the black stained tissue of central compartment dissection specimen of carbon nanoparticles group. No parathyroid gland was found in the black stained tissue. Fifteen lymph nodes containing four parathyroid glands were found in the non black stained tissue in carbon nanoparticles group while there were 202 lymph nodes containing 13 parathyroid glands in the control group. There were statistical difference between the amount of lymph node in black stain tissue and the specimen of the control group. Parathyroid glands were not stained black, and no parathyroid gland was found in the black-stained tissue.
CONCLUSION
The carbon nanoparticles could be used to identify the lymph node and the parathyroid gland for protecting the parathyroid gland in thyroid surgery.

Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University(Medical Science) 2009;29(6):709-711
Objective To measure and conduct statistic analysis of normal eyes by Pentacam. Methods Two hundred and twenty-one healthy people (442 eyes) underwent examinations of Pentacam, and they were divided into 5 groups by age: <40 years old group (50 people, 100 eyes), 40-49 years old group (50 people, 100 eyes), 50-59 years old group (50 people, 100 eyes), 60-69 years old group (50 people, 100 eyes) and >70 years old group (21 people, 42 eyes). Results With the increase of age, there were significant differences in chamber volume, chamber angle and anterior chamber depth among age groups (P<0.05). In elder age groups, there were significant differences in these parameters between males and females (P<0.01). Conclusion Anterior segment parameters are significantly correlated with age. After 60 years old, the anterior segment parameters become significantly different with gender.

AIM: To observe the effects of puerarin on blood pressure(BP),serum lipid in a rat model of insulin resistance and the mechanism.METHODS: Adult SD rats were maintained on high-fat-sugar-salt diet for 12 weeks.Puerarin was administered to the rats from 9th week for 4 weeks by intramuscular injection.BP was measured at the end of 0,8th,12th week. The levels of serum glucose, serum lipid, fasting serum insulin and the levels of MDA,TNF-?,plasma rennin, angiotensinⅡ(AngⅡ) and the activity of SOD were measured and the insulin-sensitivity index was also calculated at the end of the experiment.RESULTS: High and middle dosage of puerarin significantly decreased blood pressure, reduced the levels of serum lipid and AngⅡ,and also increased insulin-sensitivity index. The levels of MDA and TNF-? were significantly decreased by high dosage of puerarin. The activity of SOD was increased significantly.CONCLUSIONS: Puerarin possesses the effects of decreasing the blood pressure and serum lipid in a rat model of insulin resistance, which may be concerned with the changes of rennin-angiotensin system, the levels of oxygen-derived free radicals and TNF-?.

OBJECTIVETo compare the influence of different Bupleurun chinense composition to the degree of hepatotoxicity damage to rats and oxidative damage mechanism.
METHODTo successively lavage alcohol extracted and water extracted B. chinense composition to rats for 30 days, the general conditions were observed and the related index of liver function, the content of total-SH in serum, the content of MDA, the activity of SOD and the content and activity of GSH and GSH-Px in serum and liver tissue were detected.
RESULTAlcohol and water extracted B. chinense composition all could induce the increases of the activity of ALT and AST in serum, liver weight and the ratio of liver to body, and the content of MDA and induce the decreses of the content of total -SH in serum, the content of GSH, and the activity of SOD and GSH-Px in serum and liver tissue. The above-mentioned changes gradually aggravated with dose increasing, and there was significant difference compared with control group with distilled water.
CONCLUSIONThe different B. chinense composition all can induce hepatotoxicity damage, and the channel of hepatic damage is related with the peroxidative damage mechanism. The degree of hepatotoxicity damage caused by the alcohol extracted composition is more serious than that by the water extracted composition.
