1.Kinky hair syndrome: a case report

Kinky hair syndrome is a sex-linked recessively inherited copper metabolic disorder with severeneurodegenerative change and infant death. In 1962, Menkes and associates described five boys of a relatedpedigree with severe psychomotor retadation, seizures and widespread cerebral and cerebellar degeneration. In1969, Wesenberg and associated specified the radiological characterization of the syndrom. Symmetrical metaphsealspurring and diaphyseal periosteal reaction fo the long bones, anterior rib flaring, a malformed cerebral arterialsystem and subdural effusion. In 1972, Danks and associates found the disease to be associated with a defect ofcopper metabolism, confirmed by studies with labelled Cu. Authors experienced a case with characteristic clinicalpicture, and report cebral and abdominal arteriographic changes and plain radiographic findings with brain CT, DSAand post-mortem angiography.

2.Effect of Cortisone & Vitamin C on Experimental Fracuters in Rabbits

Since cortison was administered to various clinical conditions, a large number of reports reviewed the influence of its application on the repair process of connective tissue. The effect of cortisone was described as consisting of delayed formation of fibroblast, rnucopolysac-charide and collagen, depressed activity of vitamin D in the human body, disturbed calciurn metabolism and consequently the delayed healing of the fracture. And it was therefore decided to investigate the effect of cortisone on fracture healing process. Twenty male rabbits weighing between 1500 and 2000 gms were used for this experiment. Their ribs were fratured and they were divided in 4 groups as follows: 1st group: control group 2nd group: vitamin. C 15mg/Kg. daily I. M. 3rd group: cortione acetate 20mg/Kg. daily I. M. 4th group: cortisone acetate 20mg/Kg. with vitamin. C 15mg/Kg. daily I, M. Gross and histological changes of healing process of ribs were observed, and results confirmed the delaying effect of cortisone administration in the fracture healing, on the contrary, the vitamin. C administration seemed to accelerate.

3.Histologic study and type II collagen expression in the rib cartilage of patients at different age.

OBJECTIVETo study the difference of histologic examination and type II collagen expression in the rib cartilage of patients at different age.
METHODSThe patients were divided into three groups, as children group (5 to 10 years old), teenager group (11 to 17 years old), and adult group (18 to 29 years old). Histologic examination of rib cartilage and quantitative analysis of type II collagen with immunohistochemical stain were carried out in the three groups. Motic Med 6.0 A system was used to quantitate immunohistochemical image through measurement of mean photodensity. The results were statistically analyzed.
RESULTSAmong the three groups, the children's rib cartilage had the most blood vessels, the most chondrocytes, well-distributed stain of matrixes, and the type II collagen was expressed actively and highest in photodensity. The rib cartilage of teenager group had less blood vessels, unhomogeny distributed stain of matrixes, the enlarged and separated cartilage lacunae. The rib cartilage in adult group showed the least blood vessels, the least chondrocytes, the hyalinization of perichondrium, the most deposition of calcium salt, and the type II collagen was expressed at the lowest level in photodensity. Statistical analysis showed significant differences among the three groups (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONSHistologic structure in human rib cartilage changes during the aging process and the type II collagen is decreased with the increase of age.

4.Correlation between PMI and DNA degradation of costicartilage and dental pulp cells in human being.

OBJECTIVE:
To probe the correlation between the postmortem interval (PMI) and the DNA degradation of costicartilage and dental pulp cells in human being after death, and to seek a new method for estimating PMI.
METHODS:
The image cytometry was used to measure the DNA degradation under different ambient temperatures (30-35 degrees C, 15-20 degrees C) in 0-15 days after death.
RESULTS:
The average DNA content of two kinds of tissue was degradated with the prolongation of PMI. But there was a plateau period of 0-4 days for dental pulp cells of human being in 15-20 degrees C. There was a high negative correlativity P<0.01 between the average DNA content and PMI.
CONCLUSION
PMI could be estimated accurately according to the DNA degradation of costicartilage and dental pulp cells in human being after death.

5.F-18 FDG Uptake in Respiratory Muscle Mimicking Metastasis in Patients with Gastric Cancer.

A 67-year-old man with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) underwent F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for staging of gastric cancer. The projection images of F-18 FDG PET/CT showed intensely increased F-18 FDG uptake in the anterior neck, chest wall, and upper abdomen. We suspected distant metastases of cervical lymph nodes, ribs, and peritoneum in gastric cancer. However, the transaxial images of F-18 FDG PET/CT showed abnormal F-18 FDG uptake in scalene muscles of anterior neck, intercostal muscles of chest wall, and diaphragm of upper abdomen. Patients with COPD use respiratory muscles extensively on the resting condition. These excessive physiologic use of respiratory muscles causes increased F-18 FDG uptake as a result of increased glucose metabolism. The F-18 FDG uptake in respiratory muscles of gastric cancer patient with COPD mimicked distant metastases in cervical lymph nodes, ribs, and peritoneum.
