[ABSTRACT]AIM:Toinvestigatetheapplicabilityanddegradabilityoftheantigen-extractedxenogeneicbone carrying recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 ( rhBMP-2) as a scaffold in repairing the mandibular defect in vivo.METHODS:New Zealand rabbits (n=28) with 28 mandibular defects were divided into 3 groups at random:anti-gen-extracted xenogeneic cancellous bone /rhBMP-2 group (group A), antigen-extracted xenogeneic cancellous bone group ( group B ) and blank control group ( group C ) .Twelve bone defects each in group A and group B were classified into 3 time points (4, 8 and 12 weeks).Observation in general, X-ray test and hematoxylin and eosin staining and bone density measurement were conducted on each rabbit in group A and group B .Four bone defects were classified into group C .Ob-servation in general , X-ray test and hematoxylin and eosin staining were also conducted on each rabbit in group C .RE-SULTS:The X-ray showed that the implanted materials were degraded after a period of time , and were replaced by autoge-nous bone.At the 12th week, the implanted materials in group A were entirely degraded and replaced by autogenous bone . The bone density measurement showed that the bone density was enhanced after implantation .At the 12th week, there was an obvious difference between group A and group B .The hematoxylin and eosin staining showed there were more neovascu-larization, new fibrosis and new bone formation in group A than those in group B .The implanted material in group A de-graded much faster than that in group B .The significant difference in the new bone area ratio between the 2 groups among all weeks was observed .CONCLUSION: An antigen-extracted xenogeneic cancellous bone has good biocompatibility , which can act as a scaffold in bone repairment .It is the carrier of rhBMP-2 to continue the bone formation .Therefore, anti-gen-extracted xenogeneic cancellous bone is a kind of good material for bone repairment .

BACKGROUND: Gentamicin bead chain is an effective drug delivery system for treatment of osteomyelitis, but it cannot be degraded, need to be removed by second operation, and can breed pathogens. As a result, biodegradable drug delivery systems become a hotspot. Nano-hydroxyapatite/poly(β-hydroxybutyrate-co-β-hydroxyvalerate)-polyethylene glycol-gentamicin (nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS) is considered to be a good choice for the current predicament. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute or chronic toxic reactions of the whole body and local tissues, intracutaneous stimulation, cytotoxicity and hemolytic reactions after bone remodeling and implantation of nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS, thus providing a new kind of material for treating osteomyelitis. METHODS: Plastic nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS was prepared using plastic fibrin glue as microsphere scaffold and nano-HA as the core carrier of GM that was coated with PHBV and PEG. The acute, subacute/chronic toxicity, implantation, hemolysis, cytotoxicity and intracutaneous stimulation tests were performed according to the evaluated criteria of medical implanted materials as wel as biological and animal trials recommended in GB/T16886.1-1997. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The plastic nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS was nontoxic and caused no apparent changes in liver and kidney function and serum biochemical indexes. Pathological examination showed that the implanted material was covered with tissues, and inflammation changes accorded with the general regularity of inflammatory outcomes. After implantation, the nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS was biodegraded and replaced by osseous tissues. The hemolytic rate of the material extract to the composite diffusion solution was 1.2%, which was below the standard criteria (5%). Human bone marrow cells cultured in vitro with the plastic nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS grew normally with good morphology. There was no stimulation reaction according to the criteria after the diffusion solution was subcutaneously injected into the back of the animal. These findings indicate that the plastic nano-HA/PHBV-PEG-GM-DDS for treating osteomyelitis possesses excel ent biocompatibility and security.

An experimental animal model of malignant soft-tissue tumor was established to investigate the applied value of multi-slice spiral CT perfusion imaging preliminarily. Ten New Zealand white rabbits which were implanted with VX2 tumor in either proximal thigh were subjected to CT plain scan and perfusion scan two weeks later respectively, then the original perfusion images were transmitted to AW4.0 Workstation. The functional maps and perfusion parameters including blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), mean transit time (MTT) and permeability surface (PS) were computed and analyzed. All the values of BF, BV and PS in VX2 soft-tissue tumors were obviously higher while the MTT-values were lower than those in the normal muscular tissues significantly. It was suggested that multi-slice spiral CT perfusion imaging is an accurate, convenient and relatively safe functional imaging technique, and can give a quantitative assessment to angiogenesis and blood perfusion of soft-tissue tumors.

OBJECTIVETo examine the effects of continuous and intermittent exercises on obesity and fatty liver in rats fed with high-fat diet.
METHODSWistar rats were randomly assigned into routine diet (R) and high-fat diet (H) groups, and each group were subdivided into sedentary group (S), continuous exercise (CE) group, and intermittent exercise (IE) group (n=8). In the CE group, the rats were forced to swim continuously for 90 min once daily, and those in the IE group swam for 30 min for 3 times (at a 4-h interval) daily. Both the CE and IE groups exercised for 5 days a week for 8 consecutive weeks. After the experiment, the retroperitoneal, epididymal, and visceral white and brown adipose tissues, the liver, and the gastrocnemius muscle of the rats were weighed. The lipogenesis rate was determined by incorporation of (3)H(2)0 into saponified lipids, and the blood lipid profiles were analyzed. The body weight and food intake of the rats were recorded daily.
RESULTSIE appeared to be more efficient than CE in reducing the adverse effects of high-fat diet and sedentarism. Compared with CE, IE resulted in an improved lipid profile with reduced food intake, body weight gain, visceral and central adiposity, and fatty liver. The effect of high-fat diet and different exercises on weight gain, adiposity, fatty liver, and lipid profile in rats was associated to the manner of exercise, time of each session, age, gender, and length of observation period.
CONCLUSIONIntermittent exercise is an important nonpharmacological strategy to control obesity and the related complications.

A series of imaging features of extranodal, multi-systemic involvements in Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were investigated. The clinical data and imaging findings of 16 patients with pathologically proved NHL were retrospectively analyzed. The related literatures were reviewed. Of the 16 cases of NHL, skeletal involvement was found in 4, nasal cavity and nasal sinuses were involved in 4, too. Lesion in the thorax was seen in 3 patients, hepatic involvement occurred in one case, cerebral ventricle was affected in 3 cases, mesentery was involved in one case. Even though extranodal involvement of NHL exhibited extremely variable patterns, there were some relatively typical imaging findings. Emphasized in this report were the relatively specific imaging manifestations of different systems, which may mimic infectious or other neoplasms of different sites. The importance of imaging studies lies in the availability for diagnosis, staging and follow-up of NHL. Combined with the clinical and other related information, the diagnostic accuracy can be further improved, thus, providing reliable evidence in guiding clinical management.
