Sepsis is a frequent condition with high mortality, and its early diagnosis in the pediatrics department is one of the keys to improve survival. C-reactive protein and procalcitonin have been used as bio-markers in the diagnosis of sepsis, but they have limited susceptibility and specificity, and can be elevated in non inflammatory condition. Presepsin is the free fragment of a glycoprotein expressed on monocytes/macro-phages. Preliminiary reports suggest that levels of presepsin are significantly higher in septic patients com-pared to healthy individuals, and presepsin is useful for evaluating the severity of sepsis.

Objective To investigate the toxicity of alpha terthienyl to the larvae of Aedes albopictus , its influencing factors and effect on the larva deve lopment. Methods Under experimental ultraviolet A (UVA),the number of dead, pupal or eclosive mosquito larvae was determined on the condition of different doses of alpha terthienyl and different disposal time in the dark;the number of dead larvae was also determined under sunlight on the condition of different doses of alpha terthienyl and different disposal time to water. Results The LC 50 of alpha terthienyl to Aedes albopictus larvae was 2.37 ?g/L under UVA. The best effect was shown when the larvae were incubated with alpha terthienyl 3 h in dark. Alpha terthienyl could significantly inhibit the larva deve lopment and the emergence of the pupae. Under strong sunlight, the larvae were quickly killed by high concentration alpha terthienyl. The 24 hours effect of alpha terthienyl was better when it was applied at 5 AM than that of at 10 AM and 1PM. Conclusion Alpha terthienyl is an effective, practicable larvicide which prohibits the growth and development of the larvae of Aedes albopictus .

Aim To investigate the effect of salvianolic acid B (Sal B)on c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)ac-tivation and apoptosis of INS-1 cells induced by inter-mittent high glucose. Methods INS-1 cells were pre-incubated with Sal B for 24 h,followed by exposure to intermittent high glucose (IHG,11.1 mmol·L-1 12 h,33. 3 mmol·L-1 12 h)for 72 h.Cell viability was assessed by MTT assay and cell apoptosis was evalua-ted by flow cytometry.Glucose induced insulin secre-tion capacity and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS)contents were measured by enzyme linked im-munosorbent assay (ELISA)and a fluorescent probe DCFH-DA,respectively.Levels of JNK activation and PDX-1 protein expression were determined by Western blot analysis. Results Sal B significantly alleviated IHG-induced cell injury and apoptosis, with glucose induced insulin secretion capacity improved evidently (P<0.05 or P<0.01).Preincubation with Sal B no-tably decreased intracellular ROS and JNK activation in INS-1 cells, while the level of PDX-1 protein was in-creased markedly (P<0.05 or P<0.01 ).Conclu-sion Sal B is capable of ameliorating IHG-induced cell injury and apoptosis in INS-1 cells, which might be derived from suppression of JNK activation and up-regulation of PDX-1 protein expression.
