OBJECTIVETo explore the mechanism of acupoint sticking of "Hua yutie" in improving ischemic stroke.
METHODSEighty rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, a model group, an acupoint sticking group, an acupuncture group, a Nimodipine group and a normal group. Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was used for preparation of focal cerebral ischemic rat model. After modeling, any treatment was not given to the model group; for the acupoint sticking group, "Hua yutie" was applied at "Dazhui" (GV 14) ,"Qihai" (CV 6) and "Mingmen" (GV 4); for the acupuncture group, acupuncture was given at the same acupoints as those in the acupoint sticking group; the Nimodipine group received intragastric administration of Nimodipine. And the normal group did not receive any treatment. Their infarction volume, the cerebral water content, expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the protein level were observed.
RESULTSThe infarction volume coincided with the dominative scope of the middle cerebral artery of the electric coagulation. There were significant differences in the cerebral water content as the various treatment groups compared with that of the model group (all P<0.05). The VEGF positive cell number and the protein level around the infarction area in the acupoint sticking group were increased as compared with those in the model group (P<0.01), with no significant difference as compared with the Nimodipine group and the acupuncture group (all P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONAcupoint sticking of "Hua yutie" alleviates the cerebral damage after ischemia possibly through enhancing the expression and protein level of VEGF.

AIMTo explore the changes of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expressions in cryptorchid children and their clinical significance.
METHODSThe level of serum EGF was measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and the expression of EGFR by immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS(1) The level of serum EGF was significantly lower in cryptorchid children than in normal subjects at age group of 5-9 years (P<0.01) and 10-14 years (P<0.01), (2) The level of EGF was significantly lower in boys with impalpable testis than in those with extracanalicular and intracanalicular testes (P<0.01), (3) The serum EGF level increased significantly 6 months after orchiopexy (P<0.05), (4) The EGFR expression in testicular Leydig's cells was lower in 2 approximately 4 year-old boys than in those over 5 years (P<0.05) and (5) the EGFR expression was less positive in the impalpable group and the intracanalicular group than that of the extracanalicular group (P<0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe EGF and EGFR expressions may correlate with the age and the position of testes; orchiopexy improves the EGF and EGFR expressions in cryptorchid boys.

OBJECTIVETo summarize our experience in adult-to-infant living donor liver transplantation (A-ILDLT) and to analyze the efficacy and complications of A-ILDLT.
METHODSThe clinical data, surgical strategies and complications of 28 adult donors and infantile recipients who underwent A-ILDLT from April 2006 to December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. These 28 patients (14 boys and 14 girls) aged from 80 days to 11.5 months with body weights of 3.08 to 10.3 kg at the time of operation . They suffered from biliary atresia with decompensated cirrhosis. The living donors were 15 mothers, 9 fathers, 3 grandma and 1 elder brother with ABO compatible with the infantile recipients. 27 Donor organs were the left lateral lobe grafts (segment II, III) and 1 graft was segment II. All patients were followed up for 5 to 24 months.
RESULTSThese grafts were orthotopically transplanted into the infantile recipients. The average length of stay was 9.3 days for the donor group without any complications. Postoperative immunosuppression included prednisone, Cyclosporin and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). A total of 24 postoperative complications occurred in 20 recipients, including 5 vascular complications, 4 bleeding, 7 pneumonia, 2 bowel obstruction, 4 intestinal perforation and 3 rejection. Three recipients died of hepatic arterial thrombosis (HAT). The perioperative mortality rate of recipients was 10.7% (3/28) and the survival rate was 89.3% in peroperative period. One died of stricture of hepatic vein and 1 of accidental asphyxia during follow-up term. At present, 23 cases are still alive.
CONCLUSIONA-ILDLT has become an effective method to infants with end-stage liver disease. The postoperative vascular complication is the predominant cause of death.

OBJECTIVETo explore the changes and the clinical significance of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), dopamine (DA) levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with delayed encephalopathy (DEACMP) after acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
METHODSThe dynamic detection of 5-HT and DA levels in serum and CSF from 42 patients with DEACMP was performed with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The condition changes of patients with DEACMP were analyzed with three types of scales: the activity of daily living scale (ADL), information memory concentration test (IMCT) and Hasegawa's dementia scale (HDS); these changes were compared with those from 38 other encephalopathy patients and 38 non-encephalopathy patients, respectively.
RESULTSBefore treatment, the serum 5-HT and DA levels [(662.61 ± 178.50) and (155.74 ± 60.32) nmol/L, respectively] of DEACMP group were both significantly lower than those [(914.08 ± 198.04) and (225.70 ± 48.53) nmol/L] of non-encephalopathy group (P < 0.05); the serum DA level of DEACMP group was also significantly lower than that [(243.57 ± 66.94) nmol/L] of other encephalopathy group (P < 0.05); the serum 5-HT level of DEACMP group was not significantly different from that [(729.54 ± 299.87) nmol/L] of other encephalopathy group (P > 0.05). After treatment, the serum 5-HT and DA levels [(714.08 ± 170.47) and (192.18 ± 33.07 nmol/L, respectively)] of DEACMP group elevated to various extent, but only serum DA level was significantly higher than that before treatment (P < 0.05). Before treatment, the CSF 5-HT and DA levels of DEACMP group were significantly lower than those of non-encephalopathy group and those of other encephalopathy group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the CSF 5-HT level (232.44 ± 54.28 nmol/L) was similar to normal level and significantly higher than that before treatment (P < 0.05); the CSF DA level [(56.83 ± 12.85) nmol/L] of DEACMP group increased only slightly (P > 0.05). In DEACMP group, ADL score (50.64 ± 7.23), HDS score (8.55 ± 8.08) and IMCT score (4.95 ± 7.30) before treatment were significantly different from those (8.5 ± 8.08, 4.95 ± 7.30 and 15.64 ± 10.90) after treatment (P < 0.01). In DEACMP group, there wasa negative correlation between DA level changes and HDS score changes, when the DA levels and HDS scores before treatment were compared with those after treatment (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe dynamic changes of 5-HT and DA levels in serum and CSF of patients with DEACMP consisted basically with the patient's condition change. The dynamically detected 5-HT and DA levels can be used as the biological indicators to reflect the condition change and treatment effects of DEACMP patients.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the correlation of age and sex hormones to the total volume (TV) and transition zone volume
METHODSEighty-two men were divided into two groups with the age of 60 as the dividing line. Prostatic TV (TZV and TZV were measured with transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and the concentrations of total testosterone (T), free testosterone (fT) and estradiol (E2) were measured with radioimmunoassay. Exponential curve regression and one-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for statistical analysis.
RESULTSAge was significantly correlated with TV, TZV and the TZV/TV ratio, P < 0.01. There was a significant positive correlation between the concentrations of fT and TZV, a negative correlation between those of E2 and TZV (P < 0.01), but no correlation between those of T and TZV (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe significant acceleration of the TZV of the prostate after the age of 60 is related to sex hormones.

Objective:To understand the molecular pat hophysiology of hepatocellular carcinoma and pancreatic cancer. Methods: We studied novel gene expression by cDNA microarray method. The PCR pro ducts of 4 096 genes and 12 800 gene were spotted onto a kind of chemical-mater ial-coated-glass slide in array. Both the mRNAs from 5 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and 3 cases of pancreatic cancer were reversely transcribed to cDNAs with the incorporation of fluorescent-labeled dUTP to prepare the hybridization probes. After hybridization, BioDoor4096 and BioDoor12800 cDNA microarray were scanned for the fluorescent intensity. Tumor invasion-related gene expression w as screened through the analysis of difference in gene expression profile. Results:Among 4 096 and 12 800 target genes, there were 15 genes who se expression level differed from normal and carcinoma tissues. Therefore, they might be associated with metastasis. Conclusion:Further analysis of these differentially expressed metastasis-associated genes will be helpful for understanding the molecular mechanism of malignant carcinoma.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most frequent malignant tumors. In order to systematically characterize the cellular and molecular mechanisms of intestinal GC development, in this study, we used 22 K oligonucleotide microarrays and bioinformatics analysis to evaluate the gene expression profiles of GC in 45 tissue samples, including 20 intestinal GC tissue samples,20 normal appearing tissues (NATs) adjacent to tumors and 5 noncancerous gastric mucosa tissue samples. These profiles allowed us to explore the transcriptional characteristics of GC and determine the change patterns in gene expression that may be of clinical significance. 1519 and 1255 differentially- expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in intestinal GC tissues and NATs, respectively, as determined by Bayesian analysis (P < 0.001). These genes were associated with diverse functions such as mucosa secretion, metabolism, proliferation, signaling and development, which occur at different stages of GC development.
