Skin diseases associated with athletic activities can be classified as skin infections, inflammatory reactions, trauma, and abnormal proliferation, depending on the cause of the condition. Athlete's nodule is a generic term for reactive nodules that occur in athletes. It is particularly common in the foot due to tight sneakers, repetitive pressure or friction, and inappropriate choice of shoes or other sports equipment. The diagnosis of black heel (calcaneal petechiae) should be considered when numerous black spots occur on the soles in patients who frequently engage in abrupt movements, such as starts, stops, or leaps. Palmoplantar eccrine hidradenitis may occur in athletes who play baseball, dance, and climb, activities in which repetitive and strong stimuli are applied to the floor of the hands and feet. Painful fat herniation should be suspected in cases of painful skin-colored firm nodules on the feet of athletes who place a large amount of weight on their feet when moving. Itching, urticaria, angioedema, chest tightness, and syncope occurring within 5 minutes after starting exercise should be suspected to be exercise-induced angioedema/anaphylaxis. Excessive force can cause deformation of nails, as in tennis toe and jogger's toenail. For the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related skin diseases, it is essential to pay attention to patients' hobbies and exercise habits, including sports, and to consider the relationship of those habits with the presumed mechanisms of the skin disease. In addition, thorough pre-exercise warm-ups, increasing strength gradually, and wearing proper equipment will help prevent the occurrence of sports-related skin diseases.

2.The Amount of Physical Activity of Korean Adults Measured from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of how much people exercise needs to be analyzed in order to promote their health status. METHODS: Accordingly, 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey was performed during a two-month period beginning November 1st, 2001. Questionnaires on physical activities have been completed by 9,170 persons (88.45%) among 10,368 persons over 12 years old. We analyzed 7,838 subjects who were over 20 years old. RESULTS: Among the total, 71.8% persons of the respondents did not work out at all. Among them, 14.9% respondents were classified as lower exercise group, 6.9% middle exercise group and 6.4% as higher exercise group. The number of middle and higher exercise groups were increased on 2001 survey compared to those in 1998. Daily walking hours were 65.8 +/- 73.6 minutes. A proper amount of exercise were performed by older age groups than those in their twenties, by town residents than villagers, by unmarried people than married or divorced or bereaved ones, by higher educated people, by people with more weight, by those who were felt less stress, and by non drinkers. Favorite exercises were walking, mountaineering, jogging and working out at a fitness club which were chosen by 62.6% of the respondents. CONCLUSION: Many respondents did not work out at all and overall exercise rate was low. The rate of proper exercise was different by demographic features.

3.Wrist Rehabilitation after Scapholunate Interosseous Ligament Reconstruction for a Collegiate Basketball Player

For a basketball player who had scapholunate interosseous ligament injury related to sport, it is crucial to secure the active range of motion (ROM) and regain proprioception of the wrist. The player was involved in a 21-week rehabilitation procedure based on controlling pain with inactive treatments, restoring the wrist ROM with active treatments. We measured the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, upper extremity functional outcome measurement (Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand [DASH]) for the functionality, and active ROMs of the wrist. The VAS was decreased (after surgical treatment, 8.7; 1 week, 2.5; 12 week, 3–5; 21 week, 0). The DASH score was decreased when he returned to play (after surgical treatment, 78; end of the rehabilitation, 23). Wrist flexion and extension ROM were increased to 55° and 67°, respectively. To restore the function of the wrist for basketball performance, improvement of active ROM and proprioception is the primary goal to return to play.

4.The Effects of Dementia Prevention Program on Cognition, Depression, Self-esteem and Quality of life in the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Disorder.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop and evaluate a dementia prevention intervention program for the elderly with mild cognitive disorder. METHODS: The study was nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of the study were a total of 68 elderly who ranged from 21 to 24 of total scores of K-MMSE, aged over 65, in home. The program consisted of music therapy, humor therapy, art therapy, dancing therapy, recreation, and health education to enhance brain function. The program was applied to the experimental group twice a week, ninety minutes per session for eight weeks. The data were analysed by using chi-square test and t-test. RESULTS: The variables measured in the experimental group and the control group before the intervention were not significantly different in the homogeneity test. The dementia prevention program improved the cognition(t=9.243, p<.001), self-esteem(t=.4.336, p<.001), quality of life(t=8.375, p<.001) and reduced depression(t=-3.913, p<.001). CONCLUSION: These findings confirmed that the dementia prevention program made a contribution to improving cognitive function, self-esteem, and quality of life and also to reduce depression in the elderly with mild cognition disorder. Therefore, it is recommended that this program could be used in clinical practice as an effective nursing intervention for the elderly with mild cognitive disorder.

5.A QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE STUDY ON OCCLUSAL CONDITIONS IN HEALTH VOLUNTEERS AND ATHLETES WITH NORMAL OCCLUSION.

This study was accompolished to analyze and compare the number and area of the occlusal contact points in healthy volunteers and athletes with normal occlusion. For this study, 15 athletes(13 amles and 2 females with average age 20) and 21 healthy volunteers(14 mles and 7 females with average age 20.09) were selected. The visual display acquired by scanning of occlusal record in maximal intercuspation was converted into 16 gray value image. Then, using computer program (J &Lee Occlusal Analyser), the pixel which was in definite range of the gray value was recognized, and the numbers of recognized pixel were claculated to area. The results were as follows ; 1. The average numbers of total occlusal contact points were 31.05 in control group, and 34.67 in athlete group. The average area of total occlusal contacts was 100.25mm2in control group, and 127.78mm2in athlete group. 2. In control group, the average numbers of occlusal contact points were revealed in order as follows ; the first molar(8.48), the second molar(8.24), the second premolar(4.71), the lateral incisor(2.90), the first premor(2.43), the central incisor(2.19), and the canine(2.1). The least average in canine(2.1) was similar to the average(2.19) in central incisor and (2.09) in lateral incisor. In athlete group, the average numbers of occlusal contact points were revealed in order as follows ; the first molar(8.87), the second molar(8.47), the second premolar(5.60), the canine(3.80), the lateral incisor(3.33), the first premolar(2.67), and the central insicor(1.93). 3. In control group, the average areas of occlusal contact surface were revealed in order as follows ; the first molar(39.47mm2), the second molar(37.54mm2), the second premolar(9.54mm2) the first premolar(6.18mm2), canine(3.49mm2), the central incisor(3.7mm2), and the central incisor(2.25mm2). 4. With aging in both control and athlete group, there was a decreasing tendancy in average number of occlusal contact point, and was an increasing tendancy in average area of occlusal contact surface. In comparison at each age, both the numbers and area of occlusal contact were greater in athlete group than in control group. It was not significant in the numbers of occlusal contact points beween athlete and control group(p>0.1), but significant in the area of occlusal contact surface(p<0.05). 5. In comparision as to the kind of sports(Gymnastics : 2, Rugby : 3, Soccor : 5, Ice hocky : 5), the numbers of occlusal contact points were the most in ice hocky, and the area of occlusal contact surface was the greatest in gymnastics. With increasing a career in athlete group, there was a decreasing tendancy in average numbers of occiusal contact points and was an increasing tendancy in average area of occlusal contact surface. 6. By T-scan analyzing, the contact numbers on the anterior teeth were greater in control group than in athlete group, and on the posterior teeth were greater in athlete group than in control group. And the results acquired by T-scan were lesser than that caquired by the silicone bite records. It was not significant in the posterior teeth, but significant in the anterior teeth. In T-scan records, the numbers of occlusal contact points on second molar were the greatest, but in the silicone records, the numbers on first molar were the greatest.

6.An analysis system of physical training workload based on Polar Sports Tester.

The polar sports tester made in Finland as one of the most widespread instruments in physical training is of importance for sports training. In this paper, we have developed a set of system for analysis of physical training workload using the measured data of the Polar Sports Tester, and have established a set of analysis indices and reports of the physical training workload, including five categories and 127 quantitative indices. It can reflect the distribution of physical workload and provide a series of parameters for coaches to direct scientific training and raise sport level.

7.Attitude of Urban Employees on Hobby, Recreation and Practical Use of Holiday.

Attitude on hobby, recreation an practical use of holiday among group of employees comprised of 400 primary, middle, high school teachers, bankers and public servants who serviced in Kwangju city area, was studied during the period of two months from April to May 1974. The results obtained were concluded as follows; 1. Age distribution: 2933 age group came first with 26% while last with 0.3%. Average was 31.5. 2. Sex distribution: Male 94.0%, female 35.3% and noteworthy was the fact that in primary school female occupied 74.0%. 3. Hobby and recreation of entertainments; Cinema 24.0%; badook 24.5%;athletics 18.5%;Chinese chess 13.5%. Among primary school teachers cinema came first 37.0%, while among the administrative officials badook came first with 34.0%. 4. How they spent the previous Saturday afternoon; 25.0% of subjects helped household affairs, this rate reached 35.0% among primary school teachers. Sunday: 19.0% helped household affairs and again primary school teachers ranked top. During the vacation of last year, 52.1% of total subjects traveled and 61.0% of bank employees traveled.

9.Stress Fracture in Posterior Aspect of the Tibia.

PURPOSE: To determine correlation between stress fracture of the posterior tibia and flexor digitorum longusmuscle injury caused by athletic or sporting activity during adolescence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven casesdiagnosed as stress fracture after X-ray and MR imaging of the lower leg were reviewed. With regard to eachfracture, the following features were noted: age, sex, and athletic or sporting activity of the patient, and site.Using MR imaging techniques, axial and sagittal T1 and T2 weighted images were obtained in all cases and T1-GdDTPA images in seven. RESULTS: The activities undertaken were running (n=3), football (n=2), ballet (n=2),taekwando (n=1), badminton (n=1), field hockey (n=1), and basketball (n=1). MR images revealed localized corticalthickness (n=11), linear intramedullary callus showing a low signal on T1 and T2 weighted images (n=9), marrowhyperemia (n=7), and flexor digitorum longus muscle injury showing a high signal on T1-Gd DTPA and T2 weightedimage (n=7). CONCLUSION: Stress fracture of the posterior tibia might be induced by flexor digitorum longusmuscle activity induced by athletic or sporting activities during adoleseence.

10.Common Sports Injuries among National Players in Korea.

To become a national player and after becoming one, athletes usually overtrain themselves. Also they often get injured during their competition. There are many kinds of sports injuries, which are rather specific to each sport. In this study, the author analyzed the sports injuries of athletes who had visited the medical clinic in the Taereung National Training Center from January to July in 2005. There were 5 events and 7 groups of sports including men judo, men wrestling, men and women weight lifting, men and women hockey, and men gymnastics. The results showed that low back problems were the most common injury among all these sports. Besides low back problems, athletes from each sport had different patterns of injuries. Men judo players frequently had medial collateral ligament injuries of the knee. Men wrestling players commonly had neck problems. Many men and women weight lifters had wrist injuries and rotator cuff impingement, respectively, and many of them also had patellar ligament injuries. Hockey players commonly had ankle problems, and especially many women hockey players had hamstring strains. Remarkable injuries in men gymnastics were wrist and finger injuries. These results can be of help to optimize the strategies to prevent injuries and to rehabilitate the injured athletes.
