1.Evaluation of L-dopa, proximate composition with in vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of Mucuna macrocarpa beans: A future drug for Parkinson treatment

Objective:To investigate L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-dopa,anfi-Parkinson drug),anti-inflammatory activity,proximate nutritional composition and antioxidant potential of Mucuna macrocarpa (M.macrocarpa) beans.Methods:L-dopa content was determined and quantified by high performance thin layer chromatography and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RPHPLC) methods.Anti-inflammatory activity was performed by in vitro protein denaturation inhibition and human red blood cell membrane stabilisation activity.Proximate composition and elemental analysis were also investigated.The antioxidant potential (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl,N-N-dimethyl-phenylenediamine and ferric-reducing antioxidant power) of M.macrocarpa beans were evaluated by using different extraction solvents.The RP-HPLC analysis also quantified significant phenolics such as gallic acid,tannic acid,p-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-coumaric acid.Results:RP-HPLC quantification revealed that M.macrocarpa beans contain a high level of L-dopa [(115.41 ± 0.985) mg/g] which was the highest among the Mucuna species from Indian sub-continent.Water extract of seed powder showed strong antiinflammatory and antioxidant potential.Proximate composition of M.macrocarpa beans revealed numerous nutritional and anti-nutritional components.RP-HPLC analysis of major phenolics such as tannic acid (43.795 mg/g),gallic acid (0.864 mg/g),p-coumafic acid (0.364 mg/g) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (0.036 mg/g) quantified successfully from M.macrocarpa beans respectively.Conclusions:This study suggests that M.macrocarpa is a potential source of L-dopa with promising anti-inflammatory,antioxidant and nutritional benefits.
2.Multiple myeloma presenting with a maxillary lesion as the first sign.

Multiple myeloma is a clonal neoplastic proliferation of terminally differentiated B-lymphocytes involving the skeletal system in a multifocal fashion. Its oral manifestations are less common in the maxilla than in the mandible due to the lower amount of hemopoietic bone marrow in the maxilla. We report the case of a 50-year-old man who presented with a mass in the left maxillary alveolar region with tooth mobility. The mass had become enlarged after the teeth were extracted 15 days previously. Radiographs demonstrated multiple punched-out radiolucent lesions in the skull and pelvic region. Computed tomography images showed a soft tissue density mass in the left maxilla, eroding the floor and walls of the maxillary sinus. Although several analytical techniques were used to characterize the lesion, it was finally confirmed as multiple myeloma through immunohistochemistry.

3.Study of course and termination of brachial artery by dissection and computed tomography angiography methods with clinical importance

The Brachial artery is a continuation of the axillary artery, from the inferior border of the tendon of teres major to the neck of the radius, terminating into radial and ulnar arteries just a cm distal to the elbow joint. Unlike veins, variations in the arteries are comparatively less common. Anatomical variations of the brachial artery occur in almost 20% of the cases and are commonly found during routine dissection or clinical practice. To observe the variations in the course and termination of brachial artery by dissection and computed tomography (CT) angiography methods. The present study was conducted on 40 upper limbs each in the department of Anatomy & Radiology of JSS Medical College and Hospital, Mysuru. The brachial artery was traced from origin to termination and variations were noted and photographed. Patients who were undergoing CT angiography of the upper limbs in JSS Hospital were included in the study. Variations noted and compared with the dissection method. In the present study, normal patterns of the brachial arterial course and termination were observed in 31 specimens. The remaining 9 specimens showed variant course and termination in the brachial artery like an unusually tortuous superficial brachial artery, superficial brachio-ulnar artery and brachio-radial artery. CT angiography showed 6 variations and a tortuous brachial artery. A detailed description of the vascular pattern of upper limbs especially variations in their origin and termination is of extreme importance in clinical practice. The knowledge of these variations is important for catheterization, graft harvesting, arteriovenous fistula creation, shunt application and astrup examination.
