Objective: To explore the association between the consumption of chemical fertilizers and the risk of low birth weight (LBW), to provide references for prevention programs on LBW and to improve the birth outcomes. Methods: Stratified multivariate logistic regression method was used in this study involving 153 preterm LBW infants, 179 term LBW infants and 204 normal control infants that were randomly selected from the birth monitoring data between October 2007 and September 2012 in Pingding county, Shanxi province. Associations between the risk of LBW and maternal exposure to chemical fertilizers during pregnancy were identified. A normal control group was set up to compare results between preterm and term LBW groups. Results: Totally, 18 749 infants were born between 2007 and 2012, with the total incidence rates of LBW as 48.5‰, preterm LBW as 19.4‰, and term LBW as 29.1‰. Concerning the case control study on preterm LBW, after adjustment for confounding factors, the risk of preterm LBW appeared 2.51 (95%CI: 1.05-5.99) times higher in villages with annual consumption of chemical fertilizer ≥100 tons than those villages that using chemical fertilizer less than 50 tons. No significant statistical associations were found between the amounts of household chemical fertilizer consumption and the risks of preterm LBW. Regarding the case control study on term LBW, after adjustment for confounding factors, in villages with ≥100 tons annual consumption of chemical fertilizers, the risk of term LBW was 4.03 (95%CI: 1.63-9.92) times of the risk in villages where the annal use of chemical fertilizers was less than 50 tons. There was no significant association between household consumption of chemical fertilizers and the risk of term LBW. Conclusions: Maternal exposure to chemical fertilizers during pregnancy was associated with the risk of LBW. Our findings suggested that the amount of chemical fertilizer consumption in rural areas seemed also associated with the risks of other adverse pregnancy outcomes. Women should avoid the chance of exposure to chemical fertilizers during pregnancy and the consumption of chemical fertilizers should be carefully managed.

High intensity interval training (HIIT) boosts natural killer (NK) cell number and activity in normal weight breast cancer patients; however, whether this occurs in obese individuals is not well established. The goal of this study was to determine whether HIIT effectively boosts NK cells as a therapeutic strategy against breast cancer in an obese mouse model and in overweight/obese women. Diet induced female C57Bl/6 obese mice were assigned to undergo HIIT for four weeks or remain sedentary. Female participants were subjected to a six weeks HIIT protocol. HIIT mice acclimatized to treadmill running were subsequently injected with 5 × 105 polyoma middle T (MT) breast cancer cells intravenously. NK cell number and activation were monitored using flow cytometry, and tumor burden or lipid content evaluated from histological lung and liver tissues, respectively. In both mice and humans, circulating NK cell number and activation (CD3−NK1.1+CD27+ and CD3−CD56+, respectively) markedly increased immediately after HIIT. HIIT obese mice had reduced lung tumor burden compared to controls following MT challenge, and had diminished hepatic lipid deposition despite minimal body weight loss. Our findings demonstrate that HIIT can benefit obese individuals by enhancing NK cell number and activity, reducing tumor burden, and enhancing metabolic health.

Objective: To quantify the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths that attributed to metabolic disorders in population aged ≥25 years in Jiangsu province. Methods: The data we used were from the following three sources: 1) 2015 Jiangsu Chronic Disease Risk Factor and Nutrition Survey, 2) death surveillance, 3) results of the 2016 Global Burden of Disease Study, based on population attributable fractions (PAF), to analyze related parameters as mortality, years of life lost (YLL), life expectancy (LE) and premature mortality. Results: Most people died from ischemic stroke (IS) showed the standard mortality as 87.48/100 000. High SBP appeared as the major cause on CVD deaths. PAF with high cholesterol and high BMI decreased along with the increase of age while high fasting plasma glucose increased. Deaths due to ischemic heart diseases, IS or hemorrhagic stroke that attributed to metabolism disorders would reduce the LE by 1.08, 1.07 or 0.55 years, respectively. Males appeared to have higher YLL than females and were more likely to die from premature CVD, as the consequence of having metabolism disorders. Conclusions: Blood pressure control should be considered an important approach to reduce the burden of CVD. According to the characteristics of gender-related risks and the distinct impact of age-related metabolism disorders on different CVD diseases, stratified strategies should be strengthened for comprehensive prevention and control of CVD, in Jiangsu province.

The presence of lymph node metastasis is an important prognostic factor for patients with esophageal cancer. Accurate assessment of lymph nodes in thoracic esophageal carcinoma is essential for selecting appropriate treatment and forecasting disease progression. Positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) is becoming an important tool in the workup of esophageal carcinoma. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) in assessing lymph node metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) prior to surgery. Fifty-nine surgical patients with pathologically confirmed thoracic ESCC were retrospectively studied. These patients underwent radical esophagectomy with pathologic evaluation of lymph nodes. They all had (18)F-FDG PET/CT scans in their preoperative staging procedures. None had a prior history of cancer. The pathologic status and PET/CT SUVmax of lymph nodes were collected to calculate the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and to determine the best cutoff value of the PET/CT SUVmax to distinguish benign from malignant lymph nodes. Lymph node data from 27 others were used for the validation. A total of 323 lymph nodes including 39 metastatic lymph nodes were evaluated in the training cohort, and 117 lymph nodes including 32 metastatic lymph nodes were evaluated in the validation cohort. The cutoff point of the SUVmax for lymph nodes was 4.1, as calculated by ROC curve (sensitivity, 80%; specificity, 92%; accuracy, 90%). When this cutoff value was applied to the validation cohort, a sensitivity, a specificity, and an accuracy of 81%, 88%, and 86%, respectively, were obtained. These results suggest that the SUVmax of lymph nodes predicts malignancy. Indeed, when an SUVmax of 4.1 was used instead of 2.5, FDG-PET/CT was more accurate in assessing nodal metastasis.

Objective: To understand the epidemiological characteristics of one large HIV molecular transmission cluster in Jiaxing city, Zhejiang province, 2017 in order to select those people under high-risk and providing basis for programs on prevention. Methods: During 2017, newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS cases in this city were recruited. Plasma samples were collected from subjects, followed by RNA extraction, RT-PCR and nest-PCR for pol gene amplification, before being sequenced and aligned. Mega 6.0 software was used to construct phylogenetic tree, and Cytoscape 3.6.0 software was used to identify HIV molecular transmission clusters. Cases within the large transmission clusters were investigated, using a field-epidemiology-questionnaire. Data related to socio-demographics and previous sexual behaviors were collected and EpiData 3.0 and SPSS 20.0 software were used. Results: In the large transmission cluster with subtype identified as CRF07_BC, in Jiaxing, 2017, 26 cases of the total 30 cases were investigated. A total of 80.8% (21/26) could be identified as newly infected within the last two years and 30.8%(8/26) could be identified as newly infected within the last one year, including 22 cases infected locally. Among several infected cases who were at age 45 years or older, they admitted that they had experienced unprotected sexual contacts in local city for long time and having had more than 10 disclosed sexual contacts within the last two years at the local venues. Conclusions: This molecular cluster had been formed and scaled up quickly in recent two years, it has played an important role in promoting and scaling up the HIV transmission. Three cases identificed as high risk played an importantrde role in scaling up this cluster.
