Tumor 2012;32(8):628-633
Objective: To investigate the expressions of tumor stem cell markers EpCAM (epithelial cell adhesion molecule) and CD133 proteins in human primary hepatocellular carcinoma, and to explore their relationships with clinicopathological features and the prognosis. Methods: The expressions of EpCAM and CD133 in liver cancer tissues from 70 patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma were detected by immunohistochemistry. The survival analysis was performed, and the correlations of EpCAM and CD133 with the clinicopathological features and the prognosis were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software package 17.0. Results: The positive rates of CD133 and EpCAM proteins were both significantly higher in liver cancer tissues than those in paracancerous tissues (P < 0.01). Aberrant expression of CD133 was observed in the paracancerous tissues. The positive expression of CD133 was positively correlated with vascular invasion in liver cancer tissues (P < 0.05). The expression level of EpCAM in poorly differentiated liver cancer with vascular invasion in patients with preoperative AFP level over 400 ng/mL was significantly higher (P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between EpCAM expression and CD133 expression (P < 0.01). The survival of patients with strongly positive expression of CD133 (or EpCAM) was inferior to that of patients with moderately-weakly positive expression of CD133 (or EpCAM). In the subgroup of preoperative AFP level over 400 ng/mL, the survival of patients with moderately-strongly positive expression of EpCAM was inferior to that of patients with weakly positive expression of EpCAM. The factors of the number of tumors, preoperative AFP level, tumor capsule and CD133 expression were independent predictors of prognosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma. Conclusion: CD133 and EpCAM may be associated with the progression of primary hepatocellular carcinoma, and their high expression may indicate poor prognosis, thus it is suggested EpCAM (+) AFP (+) primary hepatocellular carcinoma subtype has features of high-grade malignancy. Objective To evaluate effects of daily average temperature on the occurrence of urticaria in Lanzhou city, and to analyze differences in the effects between different populations. Methods Time-series data on daily outpatient visits for urticaria between January 1,2007 and December 31,2013 were collected from the First Hospital of Lanzhou University and Lanzhou University Second Hospital.Daily meteorological data during this peroid were obtained from the Gansu Meteorological Bureau.Distributed lag non-linear models were used to analyze the association between daily average temperature and occurrence of urticaria, and the analysis was stratified by age and gender. Results The association between daily average temperature and daily number of outpatient visits for urticaria was nonlinear.Low temperature had significant lag effects on the daily number of outpatient visits for urticaria, with the maximum relative risk (RR) value (1.014 [95% CI 1.000-1.023]) observed at 6 ℃ on lag day 18.Stratification analysis demonstrated that the effects of high temperature on the number of outpatient visits for urticaria were apparent on the day of exposure in age groups of 0-18 and 19-64 years, but decreased on the day of exposure in the age group ≥ 65 years. The effects of low temperature, which showed similar trends along with the increment of lag days in all groups, were relatively delayed and occurred 2 to 4 days after exposure. Conclusions Air temperature affects the occurrence of urticaria in Lanzhou city.Low temperature has evident lag effects on the occurrence of urticaria, while high temperature does not have.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the expressions of the aging gene P16(ink4a) and anti-aging gene HST2 in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODSTwenty-three BPH and eighteen normal prostate specimens were collected and total RNA was extracted, followed by the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The expressions of P16(ink4a) was detected by semi-quantitative analysis in BPH and normal prostate tissues.
RESULTSP16(ink4a) mRNA, rather than HST2, was expressed in the BPH and normal prostate tissues. Semi-quantitative analysis showed that the P16(ink4a) mRNA expression in the normal prostate tissues (0.4868 +/- 0.545 was significantly higher than in the BPH tissues (0.2783 +/- 0.0268, with a statistical difference in between (P < 0. 05).
CONCLUSIONP16(ink4a) might play an important role in the pathogenesis of BPH and is probably one of the factors of cell aging escape.

Objective To study the expression of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and survivin in children with acute leukemia(AL) and its significance.Method The expression of COX-2 and survivin were determined by immunohistochemical SABC assay. Results The expression rate of COX-2 and survivin were 52.4%(22/42 cases)and 45.2%(19/42 cases)in AL,and the expression rate of COX-2 and survivin were 46.9%(15/32 cases)and 40.6%(13/32 cases)and in acute lymphonate leukemia(ALL),both of them were higher than those in control group(Pa0.05).The positive rate of COX-2 was 84%(16/19 cases)in 19 cases with survivin positive expression, and the negative rate of COX-2 was 85%(17/20 cases)in 20 cases with survivin negative expression, and there was positive correlation between COX-2 expression and survivin expression(r=0.579 P

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the overall diet quality and diet model of labor workers in Shenzhen using Chinese Diet Balance Index (DBI).
METHODSIn May 2009, 14 canteens from Baoan, Longgang and Nanshan districts were selected by stratified random sampling and 60 workers were randomly selected from each canteen by using random number method. Diet measurements were carried out among the 840 labor workers. Diet quality was evaluated by using DBI scoring and evaluating system.
RESULTSThe median values of labor workers' food intakes of cereal and meat & poultry were 483.8 and 121.7 g/d, which were more than the recommended amounts of their intakes of Chinese residents (cereal: 250 - 400 g/d, meat & poultry: 50 -70 g/d). The median values of the labor workers' intakes of fruit, dairy and eggs were 37.3, 20.6 and 23.5 g/d,which were less than recommended amounts in fruits (200 - 400 g/d), dairy (300 g/d) and eggs (25 - 50 g/d). The DBI-HBS scores of males and females in Shenzhen migrant workers were 24.4 +/- 6.1 and 22.6 +/- 6.3, respectively with a statistically significant difference (t = 4.21, P < 0.01). DBI-HBS scores of < 20 age group, 20 - 29 age group, 30 - 39 age group and > or = 40 age group in labor workers were 12.7 +/- 5.9, 11.3 +/- 6.3, 12.8 +/- 6.4 and 11.2 +/- 5.6 respectively (F = 3.67, P = 0.01). There were 7 dietary patterns among labor workers in this survey. Nearly 8.2% (68/830) of them belonged to Pattern A. Pattern B and E were the main dietary patterns, which accounted for 37.3% (310/830) and 31.0% (257/830) of the total population.
CONCLUSIONDBI can describe and evaluate the overall dietary quality and the major problem of the dietary patterns in labor workers. It is necessary to strength nutritional education to increase the intake of fruits, milk and eggs to improve nutritional status in labor workers in Shenzhen.
