OBJECTIVETo evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of unilateral pedicle screw fixation in treating thoracolumbar fractures through paraspinal approach.
METHODSFrom January 2006 to January 2009,21 patients with single level thoracolumbar fracture without neurological symptoms were treated with unilateral pedicle screw fixation through paraspinal approach. There were 14 males and 7 females, aged from 21 to 65 years old with a mean of 36.4 years. The duration from injury to operation ranged from 6 h to 5 d with an average of 3 d. According to the classification of Denis fracture, compression fractures happedned in 12 cases and burst fractures happened in 9 cases, including 1 case with T5 fracture, 2 cases with T7 fracture, 2 cases with T10 fracture, 3 cases with T11 fracture, 8 cases with T12 fracture, and 5 cases with L1 fracture. Based on the Flankel grade, all patients were classified as grade E. Anterior vertebral body height ratio, sagittal Cobb angle, condition of internal fixation failure, visual analogue score (VAS) were evaluated.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 12 to 36 months with an average of 20.5 months. No internal fixation failure was found. Anterior vertebral body height ratios at preoperative 3 days after operation and last follow-up were 54.3 +/- 2.8, 92.9 +/- 1.5, 93.8 +/- 1.7, respectively;sagittal Cobb angle at the three timepoints were (27.8 +/- 2.5) degrees, (5.3 +/- 0.8) degrees, (6.3 +/- 1.4) degrees, respectively; the difference was statistical significant (P < 0.05). VAS was (1.2 +/- 0.4) points at last follow-up and had obviously improved (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONTreatment of thoracolumbar fractures with unilateral pedicle screw fixation through paraspinal approach is safe with the advantages of micro-trauma and less blood loss, which can not only completely retain the posterior spinal complex structure, reinforce the spinal stability, raise the reductional quality, but also improve the strength of fixation and the distribution of stress force.

To understand Lophatherum gracile plant community's structural characteristics, a survey of community structure and species diversity was conducted through quadrat sampling in Yongchuan district of Chongqing. The results showed that there were 386 species vascular plants, belonging to 117 families and 229 genera. Based on habitat, community structure and species composition, L. gracile were found in three community types: Pinus massoniana community, banboo community, shurb community. Vertical structure was composed of three layers, including tree layer, shrub layer and herb layer. Species in shrub layer was the richness. P. massoniana is the only dominant species of the community, it can not regenerate naturally, the shrub layer has a greater effect on the community of L. gracile in the future. In addition, the banboo community and shurb community is not stable because of human's activity. Therefore, the community characters of L. gracile should be taken care of conservation when the resources are utilized.

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of acute mesenteric venous thrombosis(MVT) in the elderly. Methods The clinical features, diagnosis, treatments and prognosis of 10 aged cases with acute MVT were retrospectively analyzed. Results The chief complaints of the 10 cases were different degrees of abdominal pain, which not paralleled with abdominal signs. The accompanying symptoms were nausea, vomiting and bloody stools and so on. All of these patients were misdiagnosised as pancreatitis, appendicitis or intestinal obstruction and so on. diagnosis of two cases was confirmed by ultrasound, 8 by CT. At the same time, 2 cases underwent angiography examination. Of the 8 cases who underwent operation, 5 cases were cured, 3 cases died (1 died of toxic shock and 2 died of multiple organ failure ). Two cases underwent conservative intervention thrombolysis. Conclusions It is essential to improve the knowledge of acute MVT,especially its intricate clinical characteristics, high rates of misdiagnosis and mortality. Early proper diagnosis is crucial. The main treatment is operation and conservative intervention thrombolysis can be performed in the patients whose bowel has not necrosed yet.

AIMTo determine the effects of azide methyl anthraquinone derivative (AMAD) on growth inhibition and inducing apoptosis of multidrug resistant (MDR) KBv200 cells and parental drug-sensitive KB cells.
METHODSCytotoxicity was determined by tetrazolium (MTF) assay. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and mitochondrial membrane potential (deltapsi(m)) in cells were labeled with DCFH-DA and DiOC6 and tested by flow cytometry. Annexin V stain and DNA ladder were used to examine the apoptosis of KB and KBv200 cells induced by AMAD.
RESULTSAMAD was shown to inhibit the growth of KB and KBv200 cells significantly in a concentration-dependent manner, with mean IC50 of 0.36 and 0.45 micromol x L(-1), respectively. The generation of ROS increased obviously after the cells were treated with AMAD for 12 h, up to the peak in 24 h, meanwhile the levels of deltapsi(m) were time-dependently decreased. DNA fragmentation appeared on the agarose gel. Annexin V stain showed AMAD induced apoptosis of KB and KBv200 cells also in a concentration-dependent manner.
CONCLUSIONAMAD showed inhibitory effect on both MDR KBv200 cells and parental drug-sensitive KB cells. The mechanism of action was associated with the increase of the cellular ROS level and the decrease of the mitochondrial membrane potential induced by AMAD, which result in cell apoptosis.

This study was aimed to retrospectively analyze and compare the clinical curative efficacy of patients with hematologic malignancies after G-CSF-mobilized sibling HLA-matched (sm) peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (sm-allo-PBHSCT) and sm-allo-PBHSCT combined with bone marrow transplantation (BMT). 100 patients received sm-allo-HSCT in a single center from October 2001 to October to 2010, included 38 patients received sm-allo-PBHSCT and 62 patients received sm-allo-PBHSCT combined with BMT. The myeloablative or reduced intensity conditioning regimens were chosen according to the condition of patients. All patients received standard cyclosporine (CsA) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) as prophylaxis for GVHD. The results showed that the rapid hematopoietic reconstitution was observed in all patients. The median time of ANC ≥ 0.5 × 10(9)/L in both groups were 12 days, the median time of platelet count ≥ 20 × 10(9)/L was 15 days in sm-allo-PBHSCT group and 16 days in sm-allo-PBHSCT + BMT group. The incidence of acute GVHD, acute GVHD of III-IV grade and chronic GVHD in sm-allo-PBHSCT and sm-allo-PBHSCT + BMT groups were 37.1% and 34.2%, 7.89% and 8.06%, 36.11% and 41.38% respectively, there were no statistical differences. The relapse rates were similar in two groups (sm-allo-PBHSCT 13.16% vs sm-allo-PBHSCT + BMT 12.9%). The 3-year disease-free survivals in sm-allo-PBHSC and sm-allo-PBHSCT + BMT groups were 57.1 ± 8.7% and 61.3 ± 6.4% respectively (p = 0.852). The 2-year overall survival of high-risk patients was 41.4 ± 12.8% in sm-allo-PBHSCT group, while 60.9 ± 9.6% in sm-allo-PBHSCT + BMT group (p = 0.071). It is concluded that the rhG-CSF mobilized sibling matched allo-PBHSCT + BMT is superior to the rhG-CSF mobilized sibling matched allo-PBHSCT in increasing the overall survival of high-risk hematologic malignancies.

Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2004;39(2):114-117
OBJECTIVETo analyze differentially expressed metastasis-associated proteins in Adenoid cystic carcinoma cell lines of human salivary gland by proteomics.
METHODSProtein expression alterations of ACC-2 and ACC-M cells were described by 2-D gels. After image analysis by software, proteins of interest were excised from the gels and identified by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer.
RESULTS12 protein spots showed significantly differential expression patterns between two cell lines. In the identified protein candidates, transketolase, modulator recognition factor 2, Dim1p homolog, splicing factor (arginine/serine-rich 9) and v-Ha-ras l oncogene were all lowly expressed in the poorly metastatic ACC-2 cell and significantly upregulated in highly metastatic ACC-M cell, while type I collagen pro alpha and tumor necrosis factor (ligand) superfamily member 4 showed a high expression in ACC-2 cells and a low expression in ACC-M cells. Pirin (spot 6) just appears in ACC-2 cell and was not detectable in ACC-M cell, while retinal homeobox protein was just detected in ACC-M cell and did not appear in ACC-2 cell.
CONCLUSIONSThe proteins may be involved in the adenoid cystic carcinoma lung metastasis through different mechanisms. Our work may contribute to discover diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets.

Chinese Journal of Cancer 2010;29(7):703-708
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVEElastofibroma dorsi has an extremely low incidence. At present, comparative study on imaging manifestations and pathologic findings of elastofibroma dorsi has not been reported in China. This study was to investigate clinical manifestations, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances, and pathologic features of elastofibroma dorsi and to improve preoperative imaging diagnosis of this disease.
METHODSThe clinical manifestations, imaging findings, and pathologic appearances of 6 cases of elastofibroma dorsi were retrospectively analyzed and related literatures were reviewed. All patients were examined with MRI, and 4 of them were examined with CT scan.
RESULTSAll patients were above 30 years old without obvious symptoms. The tumors presented as a lenticular soft-tissue mass in the deep subscapular region. The tumor's density on plain CT scan or signal intensity on MR T1-weighted image was approximately equal to that of muscle with some interlaced fat-like areas within mass suppressed by fat-suppression MR sequences, which corresponded to dense collagen tissue and interspersed mature adipose tissue observed microscopically.
CONCLUSIONSCT and MRI can reflect the histological features of elastofibroma dorsi. On the basis of their imaging characteristics, a correct preoperative diagnosis of elastofibroma dorsi can easily be made.

Chinese Journal of Surgery 2008;46(18):1413-1418
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the value of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODSMEDLINE (1966 - 2008), EMBASE (1966 - 2008), CBMdisc (1978 - 2008) were searched. The Cochrane Library, Evidence Base Medicine Reviews (Ovid Edition), Cancerlit (1993 - 2008) and so on, date of last search: 30 January 2008. There were no restrictions in language. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs were both included in this study, and the quality of each included study was assessed. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 4.2 software.
RESULTSFour prospective controlled studies and two retrospective studies met the inclusion criteria. The results of meta-analysis showed that 1-, 3-, 4-year survival rates and 1-year tumor-free survival rate had not statistically significant difference in RFA group compared with surgical resection group (P > 0.05), but surgical resection was more effective to improve 3-year tumor-free survival rate than RFA (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe effect of RFA therapy on small HCC is similar to resection, RFA could be considered as the first-line treatment of choice for surgical candidates with small HCC in cirrhotic patients.
