Virus infection is a cause of respiratory tract infections and predisposes the patients to secondary bacterial infections. With the graying” of the population and the increase of organ transplantation, immunocompromised hosts (ICH) and the rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection as well as the emergence of such new pathogens as Hantavirus and Ebola virus in recent years, the morbidity of respiratory tract infections is growing high. There come the new challenges in the management of the respiratory tract infections. This paper is to introduce the application of antiviral drugs in the treatment of respiratory tract infections and discuss about the methodology of the administration of these drugs.

Objective To isolate and culture the neural stem cells (NSCs) from the cerebral cortex of newborn rats, and investigate the cell-replace responses of the NSCs transplanted into the sibling rats with focal cerebral cortex ischemic lesion. Methods The serum-free medium DMEM/F12 (1∶1) containing basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF or FGF2) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) was used to culture the neural stem cell spheres. The NSCs were identified by detecting the neural stem cell marker nestin with enzyme immune assay and inducing neural stem cell spheres to differentiation. The NSCs which would be used in the transplantation experiment were labeled by BrdU incorporation when cultured in vitro. The focal ischemic models were made by opening the skulls and removing the cerebral menings of 4-day-old rats to stop the blood supply for the neopallium. The BrdU-labeled NSCs were transplanted into the cerebral lesion boundary zones of the focal ischemic sibling rat models. The experiment rats were divided into lesion-transplantation group, lesion-control group and sham-operation-control group. Recipients were killed and the brains were examined by detecting the BrdU-labeled cells with enzyme immunohistochemistry at 4,7,14,30 days postgrafting, indicating the grafts living and migration in the host. Results The neural stem cell spheres, which floated and grew in medium, expressed nestin, as well as gave rise to neurons and astrocytes, could be obtained through culturing the cells derived from the cerebral cortex of newborn rats in vitro for a week. In the transplantation of the NSCs, the grafts were easy to migrate along the boundary zones of the focal ischemic lesions, and promoted the restore of the tissue structures in the damaged areas, the damage recovered well through the cell-replace responses. The BrdU-labeled positive cells in the lesion areas were full of the visual fields under microscope, the greatest density of the positive cells were focused in the granular layer of the injured cerebral cortex and not found in remote sites from the lesion. The number of BrdU-labeled cells gradually decreased in the brains of the sham-operation-control rats, only a few positive cells were found when examined at 14 days postgrafting, significantly less than that in the lesion-transplantation rats. Conclusions NSCs exist in the cerebral cortex of newborn rats. The ischemia can promote proliferation and graft of NSCs. The grafted NSCs play an important role in the recovery of focal cerebral cortex ischemic lesion.

BACKGROUND: As a metal internal fixation material, magnesium alloy has more unique advantages, such as biodegradability and elastic modulus. The elastic modulus of magnesium alloy is similar to the compact bone, which is enough to avoid stress-shelter effect. However, biological activity represents bonding ability with the bone in the body for fracture fixation materials, which is of great significance for studies on new kinds of magnesium alloys.OBJECTIVE: To observe the microstructure of Mg-Zn-Gd alloys and to analyze the corrosion products on the material surface after immersed in simulation body fluid.METHODS: The Mg-Zn-Gd alloys were manufactured by the method of fusion casting. Scanning electron microscope with spectrometer was applied to observe microstructure and distribution of precipitated phase and corrosion products of Mg-Zn-Gd alloys in simulated body fluid.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The Mg-Zn-Gd alloy was composed of α-Mg solid solution containing Gd and Zn elements and eutectic structure. The eutectic structure was almost feathery, oval-shaped, herringbone-shaped and strip-shaped along the grain boundary. The main ingredients of eutectic structure included Mg, Zn and Gd elements.Deposition layer was composed of O, Mg, Ca and P elements on the surface of Mg-Zn-Gd alloy after 72 hours soak in Hank's solution. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that film layer contained Mg(OH)2 phase, which promoted calcium salt deposition and reduced the corrosion rate. So Mg-Zn-Gd alloy can obtain better biological activity.

Objective To explore the feasibility of using the consensus of European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People(EWGSOP) to diagnose sarcopenia among community-dwelling women aged from seventy to seventy-nine in Shanghai. Methods Twenty-two healthy community-dwelling women were recruited as the subject group(group S),and another ten young girls were randomly selected as the control group(group C).The anthropometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA)and dual energy X-ray absorptionmetry(DEXA)were used to evaluate the circumferences of upper and lower limbs, and the dimension of muscle mass, according to relative appendicular skeletal mass(RASM)and skeletal muscle index(SMI).The grip dynamometer and isokinetic dynamometer were used to measure the muscle strength of upper and lower limbs. The ten meters gait speed, functional reach test, timed up and go test,Berg balance scale and short physical performance battery were all applied to assess the physical performance. The criteria of EWGSOP consensus were applied to diagnose the situation of sarcopenia. Results Firstly, the average biceps circumference and fat mass of upper limbs in group S were significantly higher than group C (P<0.01),while no significant differences were observed in the muscle mass(P>0.05).Secondly,RASM values gained from BIA and DEXA in S group were significantly higher than C group(P<0.05),while the SMI values of the former were significantly lower than the latter(P< 0.01).Thirdly,absolute grip strength, relative grip strength and other bio-mechanical indexes of lower limbs in the s group were significantly lower than the C group(P<0.01);the relative grip strength showed significant correlation with most bio-mechanical indexes of lower limbs.Fourthly, the physical performance in group S declined significantly compared with that of the c group(P<O.05),and no significant correlation was found between muscle strength and physical performance of upper limbs except the absolute grip strength and gait speed. The prevalence was 0% according to the RASM index, while the prevalence was 63.6% and 45.4% according to the BIA and DEXA respectively. Conclusion The assessing pattern from EWGSOP consensus could not be simply copied to applying on Chinese old people due to serious difference between RASM and SMI.The combination of SMI+relative grip strength+ TUG/SPPB/Berg may be better than the classical mode of RASM+absolute grip strength+gait speed in diagnosing sarcopenia.
