Objective To evaluate the effects of clinical center-based health management on quality of life (QOL) of patients with asthma. Methods A total of 642 patients who had received standard antiasthma treatment over 3 years in our clinical center from September 2005 up to now were randomly assigned to the good compliance group ( group A, n = 326 ) and bad compliance group ( group B, n = 316 ). A questionnaire was used to estimate the awareness about asthma, medical therapy and disease control. Levels of QOL were compared at 6 months and 1 and 3 years after health education. Results In group A,uncontrolled, partly controlled, and completely controlled asthma were found in 21%, 47%, and 32% participants, respectively. Significant difference of QOL was shown between the 2 groups after the intervention ( P < 0. 05 ). At 6 months, forced expiratory volume in one second ( FEV1 ), percentage of predicted FEV1 ( FEV1 % pre) ,and peak expiratory flow rate ( PEF)were significantly improved in group A ( all P <0. 05 ),although acute attack and hospitalization were largely reduced. In comparison with baseline,6 months and 1 year,self-reported QOL, limitation of motion, stimulus avoidance and response, and disease concerns were significantly changed at 3 years. Conclusions Clinic center-based health management could benefit disease control and QOL of patients with asthma.

ObjectiveTo dynamically observe the effects ofJieduan Niwan Formula on mitochondrial apoptotic pathway in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) rats; To further reveal the possible mechanism ofJieduan Niwan Formula.MethodsSPF Wistar rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group andJieduan Niwan group. 13-week porcine serum injection followed withD-galactosamine and lipopolysaccharide joint acute attack was used to established ACLF model in all rats except for normal group. Rats inJieduan Niwangroup were orally givenJieduan NiwanFormula for 3 days before acute attack. Rats were sacrificed respectively at 4, 8 and 12 h after models were established. The expressions of Bid, Cytochrome C (Cyt C) and hepatocyte ultrastructure were detected by Western blot method, immunohistochemical analysis and transmission electron microscope, respectively. Results Compared with normal group, the levels of Cyt C and Bid in model group increased at 4 h and peaked at 8 h but decreased at 12 h (P<0.05); however, the levels of Cyt C and Bid inJieduan Niwan group were lower than those in model group at 4 and 8 h but higher at 12 h (P<0.05). The ultrastructures were significantly damaged in model rats, which severity was escalated through time; inJieduan Niwan group, the degree of injury decreased at each timing.ConclusionJieduan NiwanFormula can efficiently alleviate the hepatocyte damage in ACLF rats, and the mechanism might be involved in the inhibition of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

Objective To provide epidemiological evidence for the application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physique differentiation to the disease control and prevention, Chinese medicine health care, public education and so on in the elderly population. Methods TCM physique types of the elderly population aged over 65 years old from one University community in Tianhe district of Guangzhou city were analyzed by one-on-one questionnaire investigation with the Classification and Identification Scale for Senile Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution, and the correlation of TCM physique types with gender, age group was also explored. Results (1) In the 65-year-old elderly population of 777 cases, 231(29.7%) were classified into phlegm-damp physique, 129(16.6%) into blood-stasis physique, and 71(9.1%) into harmony physique, which contributed to the major physique types. (2) Physique types varied in the gender. The male was dominated by phlegm-damp physique and damp-heat physique, and the female was dominated by yang-deficiency constitution, Qi-stagnation physique and interweaved physique. The differences of the constitution ratio of physique types in the gender were significant (P<0.01). (3) In various age groups, the leading 3 physique types were the same, and they were phlegm-damp physique, blood-stasis physique, and interweaved physique (P<0.01). With the increase of age years, the ratio of deficiency physique type showed an increasing trend while that of the non-deficiency physique type showed a decreasing trend. Conclusion The investigation revealed the distribution of TCM physique types of the elderly population from one University community in Guangzhou, which has important practical value for the intervention of the elderly population with Chinese medicine.

The protective effect of vitamin E and the change in activity of enzymes at hepatic injury by carbon tetrachloride(CCl_4) were studied with histochcmical methods. 60 rats were devided into three groups(A,B,C). The group A was untreated control; the animals of group B and C were injected(i. m.) with 0.9% NaCl 1 ml/100g or vitamin E 1 ml/100g body weight qd for 7 days respectively and then treated with 30% CCl_4 0.05ml/l00g by adding to the solution of NaCl or vitamin E from 8th to 14th days. On the 15th day, rats were sacrificed for histochemical study of the liver parenchyma. The results showed that the activity of SDH, G-6-Pase, ATPase, 5-NT or AcP in liver lobules of groups B and C animals were changed conspicuously after treatment with CCl_4. The quantitative histochemistry of SDH and G-6-Pase was also consistent with these results. The activity of SDH, G-6-Pase, ATPase and 5-NT were inhibited, but of AcP was elevated. As compared with those in the rats of group A, the changes however in group B appeared more obviously than those in group C. The results indicated that CCl_4 of the given dose induced acute damage in liver cells, while vitamin E had important protective effect against acute liver damag induced by CCl_4.

Objective To investigate the wall shear stress(WSS) in the common carotid artery of type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) patients, and analyzed the spatial distribution of WSS by using quantitative visualization of blood flow shear stress analysis software. Methods Eighteen male type 2 DM subjects were enrolled as DM group and 18 age-matched healthy subjects were selected as control group.None of the participants was hypertensive, hyperlipidemic or a cigarette smoker.Intimal-medial thickness (IMT),number and size of plaques in the common carotid artery were evaluated by high-resolution echo-Doppler.Color Doppler flow images of common carotid arteries in the two groups were extracted from DICOM files.WSS in the common carotid arteries was calculated by shear stress visualization quantitative analysis software, and the corresponding spatial distribution maps of WSS were designed. Results WSS of the common carotid arteries in the control group were ranged from 4 to 14 dyne/cm2.WSS of the common carotid arteries in the DM group were ranged from 2 to 8 dyne/cm2.Compared to mean WSS value [(6.96 ± 1.17)dyne/cm2] of common carotid arteries in the control group, mean WSS value [(3.14 ± 0.79)dyne/cm2] of common carotid arteries in the DM group was significantly lower (t =9.380,P =0.000).Six diabetic participants had a plaque in one carotid artery and no lesions in the contralateral carotid.Among these subjects, mean WSS was significantly lower in the side with lesion (t =7.324,P =0.000).Therefore,IMT of common carotid arteries in participants was significantly inversely related to WSS (r =-0.76,P <0.01).Conclusions The common carotid arteries of DM patients are more prone to atherosclerosis which is associated with reduction of WSS.The hemodynamic profile might represent an additional factor contributing to the increased prevalence and severity of carotid atherosclerosis in diabetic patients compared with general population.
