China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2015;40(4):594-601
The application of genetic engineering technology in modern agriculture shows its outstanding role in dealing with food shortage. Traditional medicinal plant cultivation and collection have also faced with challenges, such as lack of resources, deterioration of environment, germplasm of recession and a series of problems. Genetic engineering can be used to improve the disease resistance, insect resistance, herbicides resistant ability of medicinal plant, also can improve the medicinal plant yield and increase the content of active substances in medicinal plants. Thus, the potent biotechnology can play an important role in protection and large area planting of medicinal plants. In the development of medicinal plant genetic engineering, the safety of transgenic medicinal plants should also be paid attention to. A set of scientific safety evaluation and judgment standard which is suitable for transgenic medicinal plants should be established based on the recognition of the particularity of medicinal plants.

International Eye Science 2015;(7):1214-1216
AlM: To observe the influence of phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation on retinal thickness changes of macular center fovea using optical coherence tomography ( OCT) in cataract patients.METHODS: Surgical eyes of 60 cases with cataract were as surgery group, the contralateral eye were as controls group. There was no complication before and during the surgery. Macular thickness was examined by OCT preoperatively and 1wk, 1, 3, and 6mo after surgery. The retinal thickness changes of macular center fovea were compared after surgery. The SPSS 17. 0 software was used for statistical analysis. The paired t-test and variance analysis were used in two groups before and after surgery for relevant statistical data analysis (α=0. 05).RESULTS: ln surgery group, the retinal thickness changes of macular center fovea at 1wk, 1, 3mo after treatment had significant differences compared with preoperation (P<0. 05). The retinal thickness changes of macular center fovea at 6mo after treatment had no statistical significance compared with preoperation ( P>0. 05). The retinal thickness changes of macular center fovea was significantly higher than other groups at 1mo after treatment (P<0. 05). The center fovea appeared to be abnormally thickened in 12 eyes, including 10 eyes of single fovea thickening and 2 eyes of cystoid macular edema in 2~4wk following surgery. Eleven eyes of them were resolved till 6mo postoperatively. ln control group, preoperation or after operation for 1wk, 1, 3, and 6mo respectively, P values were without statistical differences ( P > 0. 05 ). There were no statistical significant differences on retinal thickness of macular center fovea between two groups before and 6mo after surgery ( P>0. 05), while there were significant differences at 1wk, 1 and 3mo after surgery (P<0. 05) CONCLUSlON: The retinal thickness changes of macular center fovea increases significantly after phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation. ln a few of cases appear macular edema, but the majority of patients can be restored, prognosis is good.

Objective To evaluate the standing bending, traction and fulcrum bending radiographies in the prediction of scoliosis correction. Methods 27 patients with thoracic scoliosis with an average of 16.4 years old were selected for the evaluation. All the patients were treated with the posterior correction and bone grafting fusion, and fixed with the third generation system of the segmental vertebral fixation, such as TSRH, CD, or CD+Horizon. Measurement of the Cobbs angle was carried out in the preoperative posterior anterior radiographies with the natural position, standing bending, traction and fulcrum bending and in the postoperative posterior anterior radiographies. Results Mean of Cobbs angle at the thoracic curve after operation was 31 degrees, which decreased significantly in comparison with the preoperative data. Average correction rate was 51.6%. The postoperative Cobbs angle at the thoracic curve was positively correlated with the preoperative Cobbs angle in the standing bending, traction and fulcrum bending radiographies. It was significantly different from the preoperative Cobbs angle in the standing bending and traction radiographies, while no difference was seen with the fulcrum bending radiography. Conclusion The fulcrum radiography can be used to evaluate the flexibility of the thoracic scoliosis, and is better than the standing bending and traction radiographies. The three methods should be used together for the analysis of the scoliosis to predict the result of the scoliosis correction.

Objective To investigate the expression of the basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in normal and degenerated human intervertebral discs in order to determine whether bFGF is related to degeneration of the intervertebral disc. Methods The specimens of the intervertebral discs from 11 male and 19 female patients undergone lumbar disc herniation surgery (observation group) and 6 patients with scoliosis following anterior release (control group) were harvested. The tissues were histologically observed to confirm their degenerated or normal status and then conducted for the expression of bFGF and its mRNA with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Results In the observation group, all the samples were found to be degenerated disc tissue, and the positive rate of the expression of bFGF was 90% (27/30) with immunohistochemistry and 20% (6/30) with in situ hybridization. In the control group, all the samples were shown to be normal disc tissues, and had negative expression of bFGF with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. The positive rate of the expression of bFGF showed significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion The expression of bFGF showed significant difference between the degenerated and normal intervertebral discs, which indicated that the bFGF might promote proliferation of chondrocyte and synthesis of extracellular matrix in the degenerated discs as a proliferation stimulating factor.

Objective To investigate the effects of propofol on the release of noradrenaline ( NE) from the locus coeruleus in the brain of rabbits trying to elucidate the central mechanism of the cardiovascular inhibition induced by propofol. Methods Nine healthy male New Zealand rabbits weighing 2.0-2.5 kg were used in this study. A trocar (0.8 mm in diameter) was inserted into locus coeruleus using the stereotactic technique and fixed. Four days later push-pull perfusion of the brain was performed. 37℃ artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) was infused through the trocar at 0.1 ml?min-1 . A loading dose of propofol 2 mg?kg-1 was given i.v. followed by continuous infusion at 150 ?g?kg-1?min-1 for 30 min. The experiment was concluded at 20 min after propofol infusion. The perfusate having passed through the locus coeruleus was collected before and every 10 min during and after infusion. The NE concentration of the perfusate was measured by high performance liquid chromatography. Results The NE concentration of the perfusate from locus coeruleus significantly decreased after the loading dose and during the infusion of propofol and reached its bottom level at 10 min after loading dose. The maximal decrease was 75.5% [from (15.9 ? 3.2) pg??l-1 to (3.9?0.5) pg ? ?l-1]. Conclusion Intravenous propofol decreases the NE concentration in locus coeruleus. The cardiovascular inhibition induced by propofol may partly be explained by this central mechanism.

Objective To investigate the regrlative role of the cervical sympathetic ganglia on the cochlear blood flow and auditory function in guinea pig. Methods The horseradish peroxidase(HRP) was given to spiral modiolar artery locally for retrograde tracing in guinea pig. Immunohistochemical double-labeled technique was used in this study. The cochlear blood flow and auditory brainstem response(ABR) was measured a week after anilateral superior cervical sympathectony. The animal model of superior cervical sympathectomy following noise exposure in guinea pigs was estableshed to observe the auditory threshold shift. Results Retrogradely labeled neurons with HRP were found in the ipsilateral superior cervical ganglion(SCG). Most of HRP-labeled neurons in SCG were tyrosion hydroxylase(TH) positive. The blood flow of the capillaries of the stria vascularis on the experimental side a week ago were more aplenty than that of the opposite side, but the ABR threshold did not changed before and after ablation of the superior cervical ganglion.A protective role against noise injury was observed after surgical ablation of superior cervical ganglion. Conclusion The superior cervical sympathectomy can influence the cochlear blood flow and auditory function in guinea pig.
