It was demonstrated that there was significantly antigeni c drift in the influenza virus strains from Guangdong in 1996. It was the molecu lar basis of the variation on A、B、C、D and E domain encoded by HA gene, especi ally on A、C and E domain while the change of receptor binding domain played the slight roles in the 1996 influenza outbreak. In the other hand, the variation of No 145 and No 193 encoded by HA gene resulted in biological-feature changes of epidemical influenza isolates, which could be isolated and cultured by MDCK c ell-lines, but difficultly by embryonated-eggs.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between the protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and lymph node metastasis (LNM) in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC).VEGF-related articles that had been published until August 2016 were searched from the PubMed,EMBASE,and MEDLINE to identify the risk factors of LNM in PTC.RevMan 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis.Finally,9 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in our meta-analysis.LNM was found to be present in 176 of 318 patients (57.8%) with high VEGF expression and in 71 of 159 patients (47.0%) with low VEGF expression. The overall OR was 2.81 (95% confidence interval,1.49-5.29).LNM occurred more frequently in patients with high VEGF expression than in those with low VEGF expression (P=0.001).Heterogeneity was markedly decreased in the subgroup analyses of LNM in terms of the patients' country of origin and the detection methods. Our meta-analysis concluded that the VEGF protein expression is associated with LNM in PTC.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the quality of life (QOL) in patients with breast cancer at different TNM stages and to estimate the value of EuroQol Five Dimension Indicator (EQ-5D) in measuring QOL among Chinese breast cancer patients.
METHODSA survey with Quality of Life Instruments for Cancer Patients-Breast Cancer (QLICP-BR) and EQ-5D was undertaken in breast cancer patients who had completed their standardized treatment (except for the endocrine treatment) six months ago. Chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and covariance analysis were used to evaluate the possible factors influencing the QOL of breast cancer patients. Simultaneously, with the results of Quality of Life Instruments for Cancer Patients-General Module (QLICP-GM, which is included in QLICP-BR.) and the total scores of QLICP-BR as standard, we conducted Pearson correlation analysis to evaluate the value of EQ-5D.
RESULTSA total of 178 female breast cancer survivors were collected from March 2010 to September 2010. There were 47 cases (26.4%) at stage 0 and I, 81 cases (45.5%) at stage II, and 50 cases (28.1%) at stage III and IV. The total standardized score of QLICP-BR was 72.55 ± 3.10 in patients at stage 0 and I, 64.09 ± 2.69 in patients at stage II and 58.21 ± 3.00 in patients at stage III and IV. The total standardized score of QLICP-BR and social domain of patients at stage 0 and I were higher than patients at stage II (all P < 0.05). The total standardized score of QLICP-BR, specific domain of breast cancer, psychological, social and physical domains of patients at stage 0 and I were higher than patients at stage III and IV (all P < 0.05). Covariance analysis showed that QOL standardized scores were significantly different across TNM stages when age, degree of education, birth place (metropolis or rural), occupation, domestic income, and medical insurance were controlled (P = 0.002). Correlation analysis indicated that EQ-5D has a positive correlation with QLICP-GM and QLICP-BR (all P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSQOL of patients with early stage breast cancer is better than those at late stage. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve QOL of breast cancer patients. Chinese version of EQ-5D can well detect the differences of QOL among patients with different TNM stages, which can be used for evaluating QOL in Chinese female breast cancer patients.

Chinese Journal of Traumatology 2008;11(2):84-88
OBJECTIVETo study the factors affecting extracellular glycerol (Gly) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (STBI).
METHODSPerilesional extracellular Gly and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in 53 patients with STBI were consecutively monitored. Simultaneously, the intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CCP) were monitored. The hourly minimum of CCP and CBF and the hourly maximum of ICP levels were matched with the hourly Gly. Gly values were divided into several groups according to regional ICP (less than 15 mm Hg or larger than 15 mm Hg), CCP (less than 70 mm Hg or larger than 70 mm Hg), CBF (less than 50 AU or 50-150 AU) and the outcomes (death or persistent vegetative state group, severe or moderate disability group, and good recovery group).
RESULTSIn comparison with the severe or moderate disability group, the Gly concentration of the death or persistent vegetative state group increased significantly, but CBF and CCP decreased significantly. In comparison with the good recovery group, the Gly concentration of the severe or moderate disability group increased significantly, but CBF and CCP decreased significantly. The Gly concentrations in patients with ICP larger than 15 mm Hg, CCP less than 70 mm Hg and CBF less than 50 AU were respectively higher than those of patients with ICP less than 15 mm Hg, CCP larger than 70 mm Hg and 50 AU less than CBF less than 150 AU. In patients with diffuse axial injury, the mean Gly concentration was (201.17+/-55.00) micromol/L, which was significantly higher than that of the patients with epidural hematoma (n equal to 7, 73.26+/-8.37, P less than 0.05) or subdural hematoma (n equal to 9, 114.67+/-62.88, P less than 0.05), but it did not increase significantly when compared with those in patients with contusion(n equal to 24, 167.48+/-52.63).
CONCLUSIONGly can be taken as a marker for degradation of membrane phospholipids and ischemia, which reflects the severity of primary or secondary insult.

Chinese Journal of Traumatology 2007;10(4):246-249
OBJECTIVETo study the effect of mild hypothermia on glucose metabolism and glycerol of brain tissue in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (STBI) using clinical microdialysis.
METHODSThirty-one patients with STBI(GCS less than or equal to 8) were randomly divided into hypothermic group(Group A) and control group(Group B). Microdialysis catheters were inserted into the cerebral cortex of perilesional and normal brain tissue. All samples were analyzed using CMA microdialysis analyzer.
RESULTSIn comparison with the control group, lactate/glucose ratio(L/G), lactate/pyruvate ratio(L/P) and glycerol(Gly) in perilensional tissue were significantly decreased; L/P in normal brain tissue was significantly decreased. In control group, L/G, L/P and Gly in perilensional tissue were higher than that in normal brain tissue. In the hypothermic group, L/P in perilensional tissue was higher than that in relative normal brain.
CONCLUSIONSMild hypothermia protects brain tissues by decreasing L/G, L/P and Gly in perilensional tissue and L/P in "normal brain" tissues. The energy crisis and membrane phospholipid degradation in perilensional tissue are easier to happen after traumatic brain injury, and mild hypothermia protects brain better in perilensional tissue than in normal brain tissue.

Chinese Journal of Hematology 2012;33(10):861-864
OBJECTIVETo analyze the genotype and phenotype correlation in the hemoglobin E (HbE) carriers, and to investigate the effect of HbE on hematological parameters.
METHODSThe capillary electrophoresis was used to screen total 14 141 samples and blood cell analysis was further processed to the HbE carrying samples. Gap-PCR and reverse dot blot hybridization method were used for the detection of Chinese common mutation of α and β thalassemia.
RESULTSThere is a statistical difference in hematological phenotype index (HGB, MCV, MCH, HbE, HbA(2)) between samples of HbE heterozygous (53 samples), HbE homozygous (2 samples), HbE composite α thalassemia (α-thal, 7 samples) and HbE composite β thalassemia (β-thal, 8 samples). Among the four groups, HbE heterozygous \[HGB (122.7 ± 19.99) g/L, MCV (78.65 ± 5.03) fl\] and HbE composite α-thal \[HGB (113.6 ± 22.68) g/L, MCV (73.50 ± 7.73) fl\] had slight effect on hematological parameters, but HbE composite β-thal \[HGB (76.4 ± 12.30) g/L\], MCV (59.23 ± 5.28) fl\] had the heaviest effect on hematological parameters.
CONCLUSIONCo-existence of HbE heterozygous and other type thalassemias showed variation in their hematological phenotype, so patients should be informed of genetics in prenatal diagnosis.
