Objective To explore the levels of neuron-specific enolase(NSE)in serum and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) of children with convulsion, and its significance to the diagnosis of neuronal damage was evaluated. Methods Sixty patients were enrolled, and they were divided into 4 groups:non-nervous system disease group, peripheral nervous system disease group, brief convulsion group, and prolonged/status convulsion group. The levels of NSE in serum and CSF were detected in 4 groups, and the electroencephalography(EEG) and computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging(CT/MRI) examinations were taken to observe the changes in patients with convulsion. Results The levels of NSE in serum and CSF of children with convulsion increased significant, especially in the prolonged/status convulsion group.Changes of NSE levels in serum and CSF were similar.Meanwhile, significant changes were found in EEG between the brief convulsion group and prolonged/status convulsion group;but no significantly changes were found in CT/MRI between the 2 groups. Conclusions NSE detection might be valuable to the diagnosis for neuronal damage in early time. The changes of NSE levels are similar to those in EEG,which are more sensitive than the changes in CT/MRI.It is very important to combine the NSE detection in serum or CSF and EEG examination in early time after convulsion for judgement to the neuronal damage and prognosis.

Objective To investigate the effect of low sound pressure level infrasound on che-mokine-mediated inflammatory response in spinal cord in rats with neuropathic pain. Methods Seven-ty-two healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into sham operation group (group Sham),neuro-pathic pain group (group NP)and low sound pressure level infrasound intervention group (group LNP),24 in each. The sciatic nerve injury models were established.3 d after the model constructed, the rats in group LNP started to receive low sound pressure level infrasound therapy,4 h per day, continued for 21 d.1 d before surgery (T0 )and 3 d after surgery (T1 ),all rats were detected me-chanical paw withdrawal threshold (MWT).Respectively, after treated for 7 d (T2 ),14 d (T3 )and 21 d (T4 ),eight rats were randomly selected from each group and their MWT was measured. The ex-pressions of MCP-1 mRNA,CCR2 mRNA,TNF-αmRNA,IL-1βmRNA,and IL-6 mRNA in spinal cord in rats were detected using quantitative PCR,the expressions of MCP-1 protein and CCR2 protein in spinal cord in rats were detected by using Western blot. Results MWT in groups NP and LNP at T1-T4 was lower than that of group Sham, and that in group LNP at T3-T4 were higher than that of group NP,respectively (P <0.05).Compared with group Sham, the relative expression levels of MCP-1 mRNA,CCR2 mRNA,TNF-αmRNA,IL-1βmRNA,and IL-6 mRNA in spinal cord tis-sues in groups NP and LNP at T2-T4 were increased (P <0.05);compared with group NP,the rela-tive expression levels of MCP-1 mRNA,CCR2 mRNA,TNF-αmRNA,IL-1βmRNA,and IL-6 mR-NA in spinal cord were decreased in group LNP at T3-T4 (P <0.05 ).Western blot analysis showedthat the relative expression levels of MCP-1 protein and CCR2 proteinin spinal cord in groups NP and LNP at T2-T4 were higher than that of group Sham, while relative expression levels of MCP-1 protein and CCR2 proteinin spinal cord in group LNP at T3-T4 were lower than that of group NP. Conclusion The low sound pressure level infrasound could effectively reduce neuropathic pain in rats, possibly via inhibiting chemokine-mediated cascade inflammatory reaction.

Orange peel was used as lowcost adsorbent in binding of Methylene Blue. The effects of equilibrium time,pH,dye concentration have been studied.Carboxyl, amine and phosphonate functional groups were present in the orange peel. The equilibrium time was 1 hour, the maximum adsorption capacities of the orange peel was 370.3?31.0 mg/g at pH 10.The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were well fitted in this biosorption system. Results showed relatively higher rate constant and biosorption capacities. These adsorption performance indicate the orange peel as a potentially economical adsorbent for dye removal.
6.Systematic review on the rate for injury incident among elementary and middle school students in China.
Chinese Journal of Epidemiology 2007;28(9):881-885
OBJECTIVETo obtain the incidence rate of injury in primary and middle school students in China, so as to provide basic information for the development of prevention and control strategy.
METHODSSystematic review was applied to summarize the published data. After strict inclusion and exclusion, 42 eligible articles were included for analysis.
RESULTSA total number of 259 994 subjects was studied with 79 995 persons, 127 978 person-time involved in different kinds of injuries with the total incidence rate of 30.77% by person and 49.22% by person-time, respectively. The incidence rates of injury were not statistically significant between primary and middle schools (t = -1.752, P = 0.110) or at different places (F = 1.890, P = 0.120). However, significant differences were found between boys and girls (t = 5.998, P = 0.000). The top three injuries were caused by fall, hurt during sports activities and transportation vehicles.
CONCLUSIONResults from the systematic review indicated that the majority of injuries were fall, hurt during sports activities and transportation vehicles among primary and middle school students in China. In order to reduce the incidence of injury, health education and improvement of environment should be particularly strengthened in the future. Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics 2012;14(5):328-331
OBJECTIVETo study the factors influencing short-term prognosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in children.
METHODSThe clinical data of 137 hospitalized children with TBM between January 2007 and February 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 30 potential factors influencing short-term prognosis of TBM were evaluated by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis.
RESULTSClinical staging showed that of the 137 children 21 cases (15.3%) were in the early stage, 67 cases (48.9%) in the medium stage and 49 cases (35.8%) in the late stage of TBM. The univariate analysis revealed 8 factors associated with a poor short-term prognosis: clinical stage of TBM (late), coma, positive Babinski signs, cranial nerve involvements, paralysis, seizures, obvious abnormalities in brain computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and elevated protein concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Factors associated with a favourable short-term prognosis for TBM included glucocorticoid steroids therapy, positive reaction of PPD skin test and an increased length of stay in hospital. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed two independent risk factors for a poor short-term prognosis: clinical stage of TBM (late) (OR: 11.168, 95%CI: 3.521-35.426) and positive signs of meningeal irritation (OR: 4.275, 95%CI: 1.043-17.521). An increased length of stay in hospital was shown as a favorable factor (OR: 0.893, 95%CI: 0.825-0.968).
CONCLUSIONSLate-stage TBM and positive signs of meningeal irritation suggest a poor prognosis, while an appropriately longer length of stay in hospital may contribute to a favorable short-term prognosis for children with TBM.
