1.A new method for extracting visual saliency map for visual prosthesis
International Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2014;37(1):31-35
Objective Salient regions may express the main content (salient objects) in an image or scene.Since the number of implanted electrodes for visual prosthesis is limited, only the low-resolution image is used.Extraction of the salient regions may help capture salient objects in the scenes of visual prosthesis. Methods Salient regions detected by Itti model, one of salient detection models, have some differences with human visual perceptions and its salient objects boundary are also unclear. The Itti model was optimized by removing the orientation and the color characteristics, and converting the RGB image in an image or scene into the HSI color space with three new feature components of hue, saturation and intensity. In saliency map,the ratio of the salient point area in salient objects regions and the total salient point area was defined as salient accuracy and computed, which was used to compare the effects of the two methods of extracting salient map. Results Compared with the Itti method for extracting saliency map,the salient accuracy of the improved method was increased by about 20%,and the time for detecting the same salient regions by our method was shorter by nearly 50%.Conclusions The proposed algorithm can be an alternative method to extract salient map from a complex image or scene for retinal prosthesis with higher salient accuracy and less running time.
2.Inflammatory cytokines and Alzheimer disease
Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 1987;0(01):-
Inflammatory response clearly occured in pathologically vulnerable regions of the Alzheimers disease (AD) brain. Many proinflammatory mediators, such as IL-1, IL-6,TNF-? and TGF-?, were significantly up-regulated in the pathophysiological process of AD. In addition to their traditional actions as proinflammatory molecules, AD-specific interactions of the cytokines and amyloid ?(A?) may be pathophysiologically relevant, and there was a reciprocal relationship within the cytokines inducing and being induced by A?.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampus is one of an important brain areas related with memory, and plays a critical role in associative memory function.Hippocampal CA3 is one of the most important regions to form associative memory.CA3 is functionally divided into autoassociative and heteroassociative memories, and memory formation and retrieval require the development of detailed models of hippocampal function.OBJECTIVE: To establish a detailed model of hippocampal CA3 function according to CA3 structure.METHODS: The model was a three-layered Hopfield-like neural network and was constituted by 280 Izhikevich artificial neurons, and is modulated by Hebbian rules. The model was simulated using MATLAB under the condition of adding the Gaussian white noise to its input. In the simulation, memories were represented by synchronous firing sequences.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The simulating results show that the third layer of model had heteroassociative memory function;the first and the second layer of the model could implement autoassociative memory. The model implemented well the memory functions of three subregions of hippecampal CA3.But it is impossible to understand the functions and dynamics of a real biological neural network by constructing a simple model. The model proposed has 280 neurons, which are far less than the real number of neurons. It suggests that there is a big gap between the properties of the model and a real biological neural network of CA3.

AIM:To study the effects of inhalation of aerosolized low molecular weight heparin(LMWH)and standard heparin(SH) on the clotting time and bleeding time in guinea pigs and mice.METHODS:Guinea-pigs and mice inhaled aersolized LMWH and SH for 7 days, and the clotting time in guinea-pigs and tail bleeding time in mice were observed.RESULTS:Compared with vehicle,LMWH 800IU/L,400IU/L and SH 800IU/L,400IU/L had no significant effects on the clotting time in guinea-pigs and tail bleeding time in mice(P>0.05);There were no significant differences between LMWH 800IU/L,400IU/L and SH 800IU/L,400IU/L(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:Inhalation of aerosolized LMWH and SH had no significant effects on clotting time and bleeding time in animals.

Objective To compare the effect of bupivacaine and levobupivacaine for caudal anesthesia in infant and children. Methods Forty patients with age 3-6 years old in the state of ASA Ⅰ grade were randomly divided into bupivacaine group and levobupivacaine group, each 20 patients. Both groups received respectively bupivacaine or levobupivacine with the same concentration and volume. The blood pressure, heart rate and pulse oxygen saturation were monitored during the operation. The degree of pain and motor was assessed after the operation. Results Bupivacaine and levobupivacaine for caudal anesthesia in infant and children could provide good analgesic effects. The scores of pain was similar between the two groups and had no statistic significance (P > 0.05).The scores of motor block in bupivacaine group was significantly higher than that in levobupivacaine group after anesthesia 60,90,120 min [(1.5 ±0.6) scores vs.(0.9 ±0.3) scores,(1.0 ±0.8) scores vs.(0.1 ±0.5) scores,(0.6 ±0.5) scores vs.(0.0 ±0.7)scores],there was significant difference (P < 0.05).Conclusions Bupivacaine and levobupivacaine have the same analgesic potency.Levobupivacaine is better than bupivacaine in motor block.

Objective To discuss the significance ofbispectral index (BIS) monitoring during the patients after general anesthesia while leaving the post-anesthetic intensive care unit (PAICU). Methods Seventy-five cases after general anesthesia were selected. When they were sent out of the PAICU, recorded their BIS. Results Twenty-one cases with BIS 90 - 100,48 cases with BIS 80 - 89 in slight calm and hypnosis,5 cases with BIS 70 - 79, and 1 case with BIS 50 - 60. Conclusions Without BIS monitoring, when sent out of the PAICU,most patients after general anesthesia are gently sedated and without too much risk. But still some patients are deeply sedated. BIS monitoring provides a nice reference for the patients while leaving the PAICU.

Objective To study the advantages of rhytidectomy of W-shaped incisions combined with multiple suspension in temporal hair line. Methods 40 patients were divided into two groups: 16 cases in group A were treated by rhytidectomy of W-shaped incisions combined with multiple suspcnsion in temporal hair line;24 cases in group B were treatcd by traditional rhytidectomy. Results The inci-sions in group A, with an excellent repair under scar formation, healed well and some hairs on the timpo-ral hair line grew. Fishtail lines were obviously reduced, with nasolabial fold lifting the masseter area skin on parotid. Compared with group B, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusions This approach is simple but convenient, safe and efficient. Therefore, it is valuable and applicable clinical-ly.

Objective To evaluate a kind of operative management in the treatment of chronic non bacterial prostatitis. Methods From 1992 to 1999,cross incision of the prostatic capsule and bladder neck plasty were performed for 102 cases of chronic non bacterial prostatitis. Results The effective rate is 85.3% (87/102).It was 92.6% for the prostatitis of obstructive type (63/68) and 70.6% for patients complained of pain (24/34).43 cases have been followed up for an average of 4.5 years of which the outcome has been satisfactory in 36 and noneffective in 7. Conclusions The operative management for chronic non bacterial prostatitis is effective, safe, with less damage and less complication.
