AIM: To investigate the ocular complication after radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).METHODS: The authors performed a previous study on keratopathy in 213 NPC patients who received first stage radiation and had at least 10 months of follow-up. These patients were categorized into three groups depending on NPC clinic stages. Rates and proportions of keratopathy occurring in these groups were compared and analyzed with Chi-square Test and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.RESULTS: Radiation keratopathy developed in 19 patients, about 8.9% (19/213). The latency value was 3 to 30days. The effect of NPC clinic stages and radiation did on the development of keratopathy was not statistically significant (P>0.05).CONCLUSION: The NPC clinic stages and radiation doses plays few effects on the development of keratopathy. It may play a key role that corneal nerves damage induced ocular surface diseases. It can not be excluded that individuals have different sensitivities to radiation.

The combination effect of high hydrostatic pressure and moderate heat on the inactivation kinetics of Bacillus coagulans spore in phosphate buffer and UHT(Ultra High Temperature)whole milk was investigated. The pressure come-up time and corresponding log-reduction of spore inactivation were considered during pressure-thermal treatment.Bacillus coagulans spore had a much higher resistance to pressure in UHT whole milk than in phosphate buffer.Survival data were modeled using the linear,Weibull and log-logistic models to obtain relevant kinetic parameters. The tailing phenomenon occurred in all survival curves, indicating the linear model was not adequate for describing these curves. The log-logistic model produced best fits to survival curves, following by Weibull model.

OBJECTIVETo compare the clinical effects and radiographic outcomes of mini-open trans-spatium intermuscular and percutaneous short-segment pedicle fixation in treating thoracolumbar mono-segmental vertebral fractures without neurological deficits.
METHODSFrom August 2009 and August 2012, 95 patients with thoracolumbar mono-segmental vertebral fractures without neurological deficits were treated with short-segment pedicle fixation through mini-open trans-spatium intermuscular or percutaneous approach. There were 65 males and 30 females, aged from 16 to 60 years old with an average of 42 years. The mini-open trans-spatium intermuscular approach was used in 58 cases (group A) and the percutaneous approach was used in 37 cases (group B). Total incision length, operative time, intraoperative bleeding, fluoroscopy, hospitalization cost were compared between two groups. Visual analog scale (VAS) and radiographic outcomes were compared between two groups.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 12 to 36 months with an average of 19.6 months. No complications such as incision infection, internal fixation loosening and breakage were found. In group A, fluoroscopy time was short and hospitalization cost was lower than that of group B (P<0.05). But the total incision length in group B was smaller than that of group A (P<0.05). There was no significant differences in operative time, intraoperative bleeding, postoperative VAS and radiographic outcomes between two groups (P>0.05). Postoperative VAS and radiographic outcomes were improved than that of preoperative (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe mini-open trans-spatium intermuscular and percutaneous short-segment pedicle fixation have similar clinical effects and radiographic outcomes in treating thoracolumbar mono-segmental vertebral fractures without neurological deficits. However, in this study, the mini-open trans-spatium intermuscular approach has a short learning curve and more advantages in hospitalization cost and intraoperative radiation exposure times, and is recommendable.

OBJECTIVETo study the efficacy and safety of multimodal prevention of postoperative venous thromboembolism for hip fractures.
METHODSFrom March 2009 to July 2011, preoperatively, patients were assigned to two groups on the basis of an assessment of their risk factors. One hundred and twelve patients were considered to be low risk, involving 47 males and 65 females, with an average age of (72.40 +/- 13.29) years ranging from 42 to 88,and were managed with aspirin (100 mg once daily for 14 days) as well as intermittent gasing compression devices. Twenty-six patients were considered to be high risk, involving 12 males and 14 females with an average age of (78.50 +/- 12.76) years ranging from 65 to 84,and were managed with low-molecular-weight heparin (0.4 ml,subcutaneous injection once daily for 14 days) and intermittent gasing compression. All patients were underwent Doppler ultrasonography within 24 hours before hospital discharge. All patients were followed-up for 3 months postoperatively. The incidence of deep venous thrombosis of lower limb, pulmonary embolism, gastrointestinal hemorrhage were recorded.
RESULTSOverall, there were no fatal pulmonary embolism, 1 case of symptomatic pulmonary emboli in low risk group, and none were detected in the high-risk group. Deep venous thrombosis was detected in association with 6 (6.25%) of the 112 procedures in the low-risk group and 2 (7.69%) of the 26 operations in the high-risk group. Paitents were selected in opened reduction and internal fixation, the quantity of bleeding, decrease of hemoglobin, hematoma rate, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage rate of low risk group were (538.10 +/- 390.20) ml, (30 +/- 19) g/L, 0, and 1 (1.03%) respectively; those of the high-risk group were (585.95 +/- 403.96) mL, (32 +/- 20) g/L,1 (4.76%), (4.76%), there were no significant different between the two groups, all P > 0.05.
CONCLUSIONThere were no statistic significances between the aspirin as well as intermittent gasing compression devices and the low-molecular-weight heparin and intermittent gasing compression in preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) in postoperative postoperative venous thromboembolism for hip fractures. However, there are potential advantages to reduce complications of bleeding and cardiovascular disease. Multimodal prevention of postoperative venous thromboembolism can protect postoperative patients with hip fractures.

Objective To discuss the effect of breast cancer anti-estrogen resistance 1(BCAR1) knockdown on the expression of P38 and p-P38 in lung cancer cell line A549. Methods A549 cells (control group), A549 cells with RNAi letiviral vector of BCAR1 (interference group) and A549 cells with negative control letiviral vector (negative group) were cultured. Western blot was used to detect the expression of P38 and p-P38. The prolifera-tion,cell cycle, migration and invasion were measured by colony formation assay, flow cytometer, transwell experi-ment and scratch adhesion test, respectively. Results p-P38 expression in interference group cells was significant-ly lower than that in other two group cells(P<0.05).G1phase of interference group cells was significantly increas-ing than that in other two group cells(P<0.05).The proliferation, migration and invasion of interference group cells were all significantly suppressed as compared with that of other two group cells(P<0.05). Conclusions BCAR1 knockdown decreases p-P38 expression and inhibits proliferation, migration and invasion of A549 cells.

Measurement of platelet-associated imunoglobulin (PAIg) has frequently been applied for the diagnosis of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and other immune thrombocytopenias. In the present study, a flow cytometry (FCM) analysis has been used to detect and characterize PAIg in 47 patients with ITP and Evans' syndrome, 13 patients with non-immune thrombocytopenia, 10 patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) whose platelet counts were in normal range, and 31 healthy volunteers. With FCM measurement, mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of platelets from patients with ITP and Evans' syndrome (2.26 +/- 2.29) was significantly higher than those from non-immune thrombocytopenia (0.33 +/- 0.39), AIHA (0.17 +/- 0.07) and control subjects (0.25 +/- 0.15) (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the percentage of positive platelets of patients with ITP and Evans' syndrome [(44.1 +/- 29.0)%] was also higher than those of non-immune thrombocytopenia [(17.5 +/- 9.4)%], AIHA [(10.7 +/- 7.5)%] and control subjects [(16.6 +/- 8.4)%] (P < 0.01). In addition, some peak shape abnormality appeared (double peaks and peak tail) in the histogram of fluorescence intensity (log) of 11 patients (23.4%) with ITP and Evans' syndrome either alone or accompanied with quantitative alteration of MFI and/or positive platelet percentage. In seven cases, the peak shape abnormality was the unique characteristic that could be detected and have never been seen in normal platelets. This phenotypic alteration perhaps reflects the existence of different platelet populations and could be of diagnostic value. Totally, the positive result of FCM measurement in patients with ITP and Evans' syndrome was 87.2%, slightly higher than 83.0% positive rate with ELISA method, without statistical difference. The correspondent rate of the results of these two analytical settings was 85.1%. This study shows that FCM assay is a rapid and sensitive method for the measurement of PAIg and seems to be suitable as a novel routine diagnostic technique of immune thrombocytopenia.

AIM:To investigate the effect of ozone bath on the pathological changes and the expression of cyto-kines,platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-β3(TGF-β3), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α),in the wounds of deep second-degree burns in rats. METHODS:Male clean-grade SD rats(n=80) were ran-domly divided into 2 groups, ozone bath group and routine dressing group (control group), with 40 rats in each group. Deep second-degree burn wound was established on the back of the rats, and then the examinations were conducted at 3 d, 7 d,14 d and 21 d after burn. For the routine dressing group, the wound was cleaned by normal saline and covered with io-dophor vaseline gauze every 2 d. For the ozone bath group, before the dressing, the rats were put into the clean foam box to accept ozone fumigation for 20 min(50 mg/L),and then accepted dressing change as the same as that in control group every 2 d. At each time point, the tissue specimens from these rat wounds(at wound center) were taken. The rats in ozone bath group received cleaning by saline cotton and then the ozone bath fumigation, while the rats in control group only re-ceived cleaning by saline. After that, the tissue specimens were taken again for HE staining, immunohistochemical staining and semiquantitative observation combined with image data analysis. The concentrations of the cytokines PDGF, TGF-β3 and TNF-α in the wound were measured by double-antibody sandwich ELISA. RESULTS:In ozone bath group, the wounds were smooth with clear edge and slight inflammatory reaction, swelling and exudation were weaker, and the wound healing rate was higher than that in control group with significant difference. Under microscopic observation with HE stai-ning,slighter inflammatory reaction in ozone bath group was observed than that in control group at each time point, and the numbers of fresh capillaries, fibroblasts and epithelial cells were significantly larger than those in control group. The ex-pression levels of PDGF and TGF-β3in the wound tissue homogenate in ozone bath group were higher, and the expression level of TNF-α was significantly lower than those in control group at each time point with significant difference. CONCLU-SION:The ozone bath therapy improves the local pathological changes and promotes the expression of cytokines PDGF and TGF-β3,which are associated with wound healing,as well as reduces the expression of inflammatory mediator TNF-α in the rats with deep second-degree burns, thus promoting the wound healing and anti-inflammatory responses.
