Objective:To investigate the value of preoperative slight decline of the pulmonary function in predicting postoperative cardiopulmonary complications (PCC) after left total pneumonectomy of lung cancer patients to guide the clinical surgery of lung can-cer. Methods:Clinical data of 200 lung cancer patients after left total pneumonectomy were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were divided into two groups (PCC and non-PCC) based on the incidence of postoperative cardiopulmonary complications within 1 month after the cancer resection. The relationship between the preoperative slight or moderate to severe reduction of pulmonary func-tion and postoperative complications was explored. The correlation between the preoperative slight decline of the pulmonary function index and PCC was also analyzed. Results:Among the 200 patients, 35, 45, and 120 demonstrated normal, slightly, and moderately to severely reduced pulmonary functions, and 28.6%, 53.3%, and 62.5% showed PCC within 1 month after the surgical resection (χ2=12.611, P=0.002). Significant differences in the slightly reduced pulmonary function parameters MVV% (70% ≤ MVV<80%) and FEV1%(70%≤FEV 1%<80%) were observed between those without and with complications (P=0.028 and 0.014). Further analysis indicated no significant difference between the patients with preoperative slight reduction of FEV1%only or of MVV%only (P>0.05). However, statistically significant differences were observed when both FEV1%and MVV%were slightly reduced (χ2=6.598, P=0.010). Conclusion:The preoperative slight reduction values of FEV1%and MVV%were the risk factors in predicting PCC after left pneumo-nectomy in lung cancer patients. The slightly reduced FEV1%or MVV%alone cannot influence PCC. Both slightly reduced FEV1%and MVV%were the risk factors of PCC. Perioperative management should be strengthened for these patients to lower the incidence of PCC.

Microbiology 1992;0(05):-
The brown slime inside pipeline of the polluted mineral waters well was analyzed. It was confirmed that the brown slime was a biofilm formed mainly by growth of bacteria contaminant, using microscope analysis. After treated with HCl, the brown crystals and mycelioid matter presented in slimes disappeared. It was verified these were metal deposits. The samples produced Prussia blue deposits by dropping K 4Fe(CN) 6 and HCl, which proved that the metal deposits were iron compound. Also it was believed the biofilm was produced by growth of iron bacteria, mixed with deposits of iron compound. The iron bacteria have been isolated from the slimes and cultured in the laboratory. The colony on agar plate also produced Prussia blue deposits after treated with K 4Fe(CN) 6 and HCl. The cells form of pure culture was the same as that in the samples by electronmicroscope analysis. Therefore, It indicated that the bacteria on biofilm inside pipeline were iron bacteria mainly.

Objective To evaluate the effects of nasal non-Hodgkin′s lymphoma(N-NHL) treated with chemotherapy alone, radiotherapy alone, chemotherapy plus radiotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation(APBSCT) combined with total body irradiation(TBI);and to analyze the impact factors of prognosis. Methods 135 patients were treated between 1980 and 2000. All were confirmed by histopathology as N-NHL, including 122 T cell in origin, 12 B cell and 1 NK cell in origin. The main radiotherapy portal was set in front of the nose with a spade-like protrusion, supplement with a portal next to the ear on one side or both sides. Combined portal in facial cervical area was first used when there was invasion of the oropharynx. The median dose to the nasal cavity was 56.0Gy with a range of 35.2 to 75.5Gy, with added 30Gy to the primary lesion in two patients. Six patients received TBI combined with APBSCT, with 8Gy in the TBI group. Chemotherapy, given before or during after radiotherapy or alone, consisted of 2-6 cycles of COP, COPP, COMP, CHOP or COBDP. Prognostic factors were analyzed with Cox model. Results The local control rate was 12%,69%,76% and 83% in chemotherapy alone, radiotherapy alone, chemotherapy plus radiotherapy and APBSCT combined with TBI, respectively(P=0.057).The 5-year survival rate was 9%,52%,63% and 83%,respectively(P=0.032). Multi-factor analysis showed that tumor extension and treatment methods were the most important prognostic factors besides Ann-Arbor stage, but gender, pathology, age and symptoms had little effect on prognosis .Conclusions Chemotherapy plus radiotherapy group achieves a better survival rate than radiotherapy alone. It is helpful to evaluate prognosis to make more detail subareas on basis of local extensions in Ann Arbor staging system. For some N-NHL patients with good financial condition, APBSCT combined with TBI is a good choice.

Objective To determine the reliability of the tooth wear index in representing the profile of tooth cervical defect. Methods One hundred and ninety-three teeth with wedge-shaped defects were selected in 69 plaster casts. The sizes of every wedge-shaped defect were measured by using vernire caliper and the volumes of those were calculated. Otherwise, by weighting the restoration of defects, the real volumes of the 9 teeth defects were calculated by formulating. Results The formulation for calculatin of the real volume of the defects was presented as: volume = 0.4735 + 2.5948 X (deep of profile X height X broad of defects)/6. The profile of the defect was strongly related to the volume. Conclusions The value of one dimension measure of the wedge-shaped defects may present the tooth wear index.
