OBJECTIVEThis study aims to investigate the caries status of the first permanent molar and primary tooth among 7- to 9-year-old children in Tangshan city and the correlation between caries of primary tooth and the first permanent molar.
METHODSA stratified cluster sampling method was used on the basis of the Basic Approach of Oral Health Survey of WHO and the Guideline of the Third National Oral Health Survey. A total of 10 primary schools were randomly sampled in clusters that included 51 primary school sampling spots in Tangshan. The caries status of 1 794 children aged 7 years to 9 years was examined.
RESULTSThe prevalence rate of the first permanent molar caries was 47.49% (852/1 794), the mean number of DMFT was 1.30 ± 1.59, the mean number of DMFS was 1.96 ± 3.40, and the filling rate was only 2.35% (20/852). The preva- lence rate and mean DMFT of the first permanent molar caries showed significant difference between different ages and genders (P < 0.05). However, the mean DMFS of the first permanent molar caries only showed significant difference between the various ages (P < 0.05). The prevalence rate of the primary tooth caries was 83.11% (1 491/1 794), the mean number of dmft was 4.82 ± 3.55, the mean number of dmfs was 6.51 ± 5.61, and the filling rate was 12.41% (185/1 491). Caries of primary tooth was the first permanent molar caries risk factor [r = 0.277, OR = 5.736, P = 0.00, 95% CI (4.175, 7.881)]. Significant correlation was found between the caries of primary tooth and first permanent molar (r = 0.274, P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONCaries status of the first permanent molar among 7- to 9-year-old children in Tangshan city is serious. Caries status of primary tooth may play an important role in predicting the first permanent molar caries in clinic and prevention.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of the flowable resin used as pit and fissure sealant using different etching adhesive systems.Methods:60 caries-free extracted human premolars were randomly divided into 4 groups(n =1 5)and treated by Gluma, NT and 3M-Z350 flowable resin(group A);Clearifil SE Bond adhesive and 3M-Z350 flowable resin(group B),phosphoric acid etching,3M-Z350 flowable resin and phosphoric acid etching(group C)and 3Mconcise sealant(group D)respectively. After pro-cessing the tooth surface the pit and fissue of 1 0 sample in each group were sealed. The microleakage was measured by 1 % methyl-ene blue staining(n =8).The material-enamel interface was observed by SEM(n =2).The shear bond strength of the column-shaped samples with the diameter and the height of 3 mm(n =5)on the mesial or dental surface was examined by a test machine. The sealant cartridges and flowable resin cartridges with the diameter and height of 4 mm were used for the crushing strength exami-nation(n =1 0).Results:There was no significant difference in the microleakage among the 4 groups.SEMobservation showed that the resin tags of group A were long and dense and the resin tags of group B were short and sparse, bubbles and cracks were found on the local site in group A and B.The resin tags of group C were long and thin, but combined with tooth tightly;the resin tags of group D were short and dense;the penetration was poor at the bottom of the fissures in the 4 groups. The shear bond strength of Group A was the highest(P <0.01 ),that of group C was higher than that of group B and D(P <0.05).There was no significantly difference between group B and D(P >0.05).The compressive strength of flowable resin groups was higher than that of fissure seal-ant group(P <0.05).Conclusion:The shear bond strength and compressive strength of all-etching bonding system combined with flowable resin is superior to that of self-etching bonding system combined with flowable resin and the traditional sealant.Using Prime&Bond NT bond after acid etching may improve the shear bonding strength.

Objective To explore the impact of advanced glycation end-products ( AGEs) on matrix metalloproteinase 2 ( MMP-2) expression in cultivated INS-1 cells. Method INS-1 cells were cultivated and MMP-2 expression was analyzed. Glycated serum was prepared for incubating with INS-1 cell. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected by flow cytometry. The intracelluar MMP-2 expression was analyzed by RT-PCR, realtime PCR and Western blot. The MMP-2 cDNA was expressed in cultivated INS-1 cells. Result The level of ROS treated with AGEs was significantly higher than that in the control( P<0.05 ) , and the levels of MMP-2 and its protein expressions turned out as well( P<0. 05). Conclusion The results suggest that MMP-2 was expressed in INS-1 cells. Increased MMP-2 expression in ?cells may be induced by AGEs, suggesting that MMP-2 might play an important role in oxidative stress-mediated islet injury.

The abdominal visceral fat content in obese SD rats induced by high fat diet for 10 weeks was significantly higher than that in control group [(26±6 vs 13±3)g,P<0.01] ,along with increased CRP mRNA expression in abdominal visceral fat (0.901±0.085 vs O. 402±0.036, P<0.01). As compared with normal control group, in the high fat group the concentrations of CRP in portal vein [(743.8±95.8 vs 558.3 ±118.3) mg/L, P<0.01] and peripheral vein[(596.3±38.9 vs 485.8±30.2) mg/L,P<0. 05] were higher. The concentration of CRP in portal vein was significantly higher than that in peripheral vein in high fat diet group(P<0.01) ,but this was not evident in control group. These results suggest that the increased CRP expression in visceral adipose tissue may partially account for the elevation of serum CRP in obesity.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the risk factors for nosocomial pneumonia(NP) caused by imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii(IRAB) and its antimicrobial susceptibility in vitro. METHODS The data of 34 cases of IRAB-NP were analyzed and 68 cases of NP caused by imipenem-susceptible A.baumannii(ISAB) were randomized as control.Antimicrobial susceptibility(MIC) was determined with the method of agar dilution. RESULTS The two independent factors associated with the development of IRAB-NP: previous fluoroquinolone(OR=5.738) and imipenem/meropenem(OR=7.129) use.The drug sensitivity test in vitro showed that these strains were multiresistant to commonly used antibiotics, and only ampicillin/sulbactam and cefoperazone/sulbactam whose resistance rate was less than 30%. CONCLUSIONS Previous imipenem/meropenem and fluoroquinolone use is independent risk factors for IRAB-NP.These strains are high drug resistant.

A thiosulfate-oxidizing bacterium TX was isolated from polysulfide wastewater treatment system. It was preliminarily identified as Halothiobacillus sp.according to its morphological, physiological proper-ties and similarity analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence(GenBank accession No.EU871645).This bacte-rium was an obligate chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacterium since it could utilize thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, tetrathionate, sulfide or sulfite as sole energy source but did not show growth on the me-dium with glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, mannose or yeast extract as sole carbon source. The optimal growth condition for thiosulfate oxidation was 30?C~35?C and pH 3.0~5.0 respectively.Significant reduc-tion in medium pH from 4.0 to 1.2 was observed due to oxidation of thiosulfate to sulfate during the batch culture incubation period.During the course of thiosulfate oxidation accumulation of tetrathionate was ob-served either in synthetic medium or in the mixed liquor from aeration tank of the polysulfide wastewater treatment system. This indicates that the "S4 intermediate(S4I)" pathway was responsible for thiosulfate oxidation in this bacterium.

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics and the imaging features of patients with hemichorea associated with hyperglycemia in primary diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical manifestations and the neuroimaging features of 2 patients with hemichorea induced by hyperglycemia in primary DM, admitted to our hospital on 9 and 29 October 2010; the related literatures about this disease were reviewed. Results These 2 patiewnts were both old female diabetics with acute onset of symptomatic hemichorea. One had an outbreak during using insulin to control blood glucose and the other did without using insulin; at first, case 2 symptom of one side chorea was showed, and then both sides were noted.CT findings indicated T1-high-density shadow in the contralateral caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus (CT values in 50 Hu or so); MR imaging indicated that T1WI showed high-signal in the contralateral caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus, while T2WI showed low-signal; partial light atrophy but no strengthening phenomenon in lesion location were noted. These patients were treated effectively with haloperidol and clonazepam. Conclusion Hemichorea induced by hyperglycemia often involves diabetic patients with poor glucose control. Characteristic imaging changes in the contralateral basal ganglia; blood glucose control is the foundation of treatment; haloperidol and clonazepam are helpful in controling hemichorea.
